If he is excommunicated, let his excommunication continue, for he has lied and deceived the Church of God. (Ap. 12, 83; Trul. 17). This rule is a continuation of the 12th Ap. rules, as a result of which in the Latin edition of the Apostolic Rules of Dionysius both of them are combined into one 157. The previous (12) rule speaks of those who are excommunicated in general, and then of the laity, who, although unworthy of the priestly rank, are not excommunicated from the church. The same (13) rule speaks of a cleric who was ordained and then excommunicated, who, having been excommunicated by his bishop, and being dissatisfied with this, is sent to the diocese of another bishop, who, not knowing about his excommunication, takes him under his jurisdiction; the rule prescribes that the excommunication of such a liar and deceiver should last longer. The rule here refers to those clergy on whom the prohibition to perform sacred services was imposed only temporarily (Ap. 5, 59; IV Ecum. 20). Such a prohibition can be lifted from the guilty only by the bishop who imposed it (Ap. 16:32; I Om. 5; Antioch. 6; Serdic. 13). Consequently, as the rule says, such an excommunicate must be sent in this case to his bishop, from whom he left, and he can, at his discretion, continue to prohibit him from performing sacred acts, since he lied, as the rule says, and deceived the Church of God.
