St. Martyr Evdokia
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
These words of the Divinely inspired Apostle were realized with amazing fidelity in the life of Blessed Evdokia, remembered by the Church today.
Just as a hurricane, suddenly flying into the abyss of the sea, twists and shakes the waves with irresistible force, brings them into violent motion and agitation and, penetrating to the very depths of the sea, powerfully brings to the surface objects hidden in inaccessible depths - so is the light and power of St. The Scriptures suddenly penetrated the dark soul of the great sinner and plucked out the treasures hidden in the depths of her, inherent in the human soul, but inactive, dead, invisible, while the darkness of sins looms over them...
In a miraculous way, the Lord, “who does not want the death of the sinner, but to turn him from evil to the path of goodness and reason of true life,” extracted a soul far from Him from the most hopeless, dark kingdom of sin - into the bright haven of saving repentance. This way was the action of His Divine Word, crushing sin.
Once upon a time, at a time when paganism still prevailed everywhere, and pagan morals still allowed unfettered licentiousness, there lived in the city of Philippi Iliopolis (present-day Balbec) one rich woman, remarkable for her extraordinary beauty, which attracted many admirers to her, with whom she indulged in a riotous, carefree life amid insane luxury and complete idleness. It seemed that nothing except unclean pleasures occupied her; she was a pagan in the full sense of the word; Not a single ray of Christ’s light had yet penetrated her soul.
But this light was already shining in the world... and the number of those captured by it was spreading everywhere - and these chosen ones, in turn, served as a blessed instrument for attracting new lucky ones to it...
The hour of rebirth has finally come for the dying Evdokia...
One day, when she was enjoying the night's peace in the luxurious room of her house, suddenly in the middle of the night she woke up. The Lord was pleased to determine this moment for the awakening of her sleeping soul...
Behind the wall of the room where Evdokia slept was another dwelling, occupied by a Christian. It so happened that on that day a monk named Herman arrived in the city and stayed in this Christian dwelling. When night came, he prayed for a long time before falling asleep. After the prayer, the priest began to read. Scripture; he read aloud; reading it was touching; it was often interrupted by deep sighs and prayerful invocations.
Evdokia began to listen. The monk read about the terrible judgment of the Lord, about the eternal bliss in the Kingdom of God that awaits the righteous, about the terrible torment that awaits people leading a lawless life...
Evdokia, who had woken up, listened with curiosity. What the monk read about was completely new to her. A Samaritan by origin, she had never been familiar with Christians, and the teaching of Christ was still completely unknown to her.
The Savior’s words about the Last Judgment and eternal life struck her. Her soul was confused under the influence of some fear that was incomprehensible to her... Evdokia could not sleep and early in the morning she called a monk to her.
-Who are you and where are you from? What is your life and your faith? - she asked the monk, - from the moment I heard what you read tonight, my soul was excited... And if it is true that sinful people face a painful eternity, then tell me, who can be saved? It’s scary and surprising what you read about the trial... I’ve never heard anything about it...
What kind of faith is yours if you say that you have never heard of the judgment of the Lord? – asked Herman.
“By my fatherland and by faith, I am a Samaritan,” answered Evdokia, “I am very rich, and when I heard the words that it is difficult for the rich to be saved, I was horrified...
- Tell me, where did you get such wealth? Do you have it from your husband? – asked Herman.
- No, I don’t have a legal husband... but I have collected my wealth from many husbands... I’m just thinking now, what use is my wealth to me if the rich face torment in the future life?
“Woman, tell me the truth, because my Christ, Whom I serve, is true and demands truth. Do you want to be saved by giving up wealth and live in endless joy, or, living here in wealth, deprive yourself of a pleasant fate in eternal life?”
– I am ready to give up my wealth for the sake of eternal joy... But it surprises me why your God does not tolerate the rich so much...
- No, God does not reject the rich, but rejects only those who unjustly acquire wealth or misuse it to satisfy illegal needs and not for the benefit of their neighbors...
– What can you say about my wealth: is it righteous or unrighteous?
– I consider him truly unrighteous and contrary to God...
- Why is this? I have clothed many poor people, fed many... What evil is there in my wealth?
“Listen to me,” objected Herman, “although you give alms, you cannot be pleasing to God, living unrighteously in many other respects... You cannot receive the grace of God by living in uncleanness... Whoever comes to wash in the bathhouse does not wash himself with muddy and dirty water - although you cleanse your soul with alms, you use the wrong means for it... He who walks barefoot on thorns, he is exposed to splinters, and even if he manages to remove a few splinters from his leg, then still many more splinters will remain in the body, which can be harmful... So you, if you sometimes give alms to a beggar, and with this alms you make up for some sinful act, then there will still be many sinful splinters on your conscience, which hinder your complete cleansing before God... which are preparing for you a painful eternity that awaits the unrepentant sinners; but you can avoid it if you want to know the commandments of God and fulfill them...
“Stay with me a little longer, servant of God,” Evdokia prayed, “and tell me about those deeds by which you can be rewarded with the mercy of God... Teach me your Christian faith... Take from me as much gold as you want and spend a few days here... I’m ready to give away all my wealth and follow you wherever you go...
“I don’t need gold,” the monk answered, “I only want your salvation; and although I was in a hurry to return to my monastery, I will remain here a few more days to see your appeal to God. And you call a Christian elder from this city so that he can teach you and baptize you, because this is the beginning and foundation of salvation...
The priest was not a little surprised when a messenger from Evdokia came to invite him to her, since she was known throughout the city as a frivolous woman, devoted to an empty, idle, sinful life. However, he did not hesitate to go to her. Seeing him, she fell at his feet and begged him to make her a Christian...
Noticing how little this woman was still prepared for the perception of the truth of Christ, how entangled her thinking was with all the worldly vanity and, as yet, only with unconscious fear, the priest did not find it convenient to immediately perform holy acts on her. baptism, but advised her to spend at least one week in solitude and prayer. Meanwhile, he prepared her, revealing and explaining to her the main truths of the Christian faith and encouraging her with God's infinite mercy for everyone and especially for repentant sinners.
“Try to forget about the world,” he also told her, “don’t let your mind wander; drive away fear and doubt so that they do not turn you away from a good undertaking. Direct all your thoughts and feelings to God, and you will be convinced of the ineffable mercy of the Lord, since in humble prayer the soul is reconciled with God, and the Divine light is revealed to it... Put off your precious jewelry, put on simple clothes; remember your sins, pray to God to help you repent and start a new life, and firmly hope for His help. He is good and merciful; He Himself comes to meet those who sincerely desire to acquire Him; He rejoices most of all at the repentance of a sinner.
When the priest left, Evdokia talked for a long time with the monk Herman, asking him about the way of life of Christians, about monasticism. Having said goodbye to him, Evdokia called her servants and ordered them not to allow anyone to see her, but she herself retired to her room and spent seven days in fasting and prayer.
After this time, the monk Herman, according to his promise, visited Evdokia. He found her changed, tired; her face became thinner, but shone with some wonderful joy, as if reflecting the light of her transformed heart, now full of love and hope. Moreover, she was delighted by a wonderful vision, which she reported to Herman: “A wonderful light suddenly shone upon me,” said Evdokia, “and a bright and beautiful angel, taking me by the hand, carried me to heaven... There the faces of holy souls greeted me joyfully and called me sister. But suddenly a terrible image of an evil spirit appeared in the air... He rushed towards me with rage and tried to snatch me from the hands of the angel. – “Is this the soul you want to lift to heaven? - he said to the angel, - she spent her earthly life in sin; “she served and pleased me... she is mine”... A bright angel protected me and at that time the words were heard: “It pleases the merciful God to save repentant sinners... Let this soul accomplish its feat, and I will be with her all the days of her life.” With these words the evil spirit disappeared...
The angel, returning me to my home, said: “There is a lot of joy in heaven when a sinner comes to repentance, because the merciful Heavenly Father does not want the human soul to perish, created with His most pure hands in His image and likeness.” Having said this, the angel crossed me and walked away...
“Now, my daughter,” said Herman, “are you convinced that there is a true God who accepts the repentant and introduces them into His eternal light?”
“I believe,” answered Evdokia, “that there is no other God except the One whose dwelling I was approaching...
“So prepare yourself for diligent service to this God,” said Herman, and after spending a little more time with Evdokia in order to prepare her for receiving St. baptism, returned to his monastery. She, inflamed with fiery love for God, decided to completely devote her whole life to Him; spent time in fasting and prayer, and cried days and nights about her sins, which she realized only since the ray of Christ's truth overshadowed her soul...
Finally, Evdokia went to Bishop Theodotus of Iliopolis and received St. baptism.
After some time, the monk Herman visited her again, seeing that she had used all her wealth for the poor, had freed her slaves and was living in poverty and humility, and sent her to a women’s monastery, which was located not far from the monastery in which he himself lived. This was in the year 96, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan. Having become a nun, Evdokia zealously began reading St. Scripture and the study of the psalter, she completely devoted herself to the labors and exploits of monastic life and to such an extent surpassed all the nuns in the labors of fasting and prayer that when, in the second year of her entry into the monastery, the local abbess died, then, according to the general desire, Evdokia was elected abbess of the monastery.
Meanwhile, in Iliopol they remembered the cheerful and rich Evdokia, many regretted her removal and would like to persuade her to return to her former life... In particular, one young man Philostratus, who loved Eudokia, was burdened by separation from her and finally decided to go to her in order to persuade her to return to the city and live as before. Through deception, he managed to achieve a meeting with Evdokia, but in the pale, exhausted ascetic, he could hardly recognize the famous young woman in Iliopolis, who captivated everyone with her beauty... He did not understand what could make her exchange her former brilliant life for such a wretched situation... With enthusiasm, he began to remember the past fun and convince her to return to the city, where everyone so regretted her absence, where her former friends were ready to surround her again with luxury, shower her with the richest gifts, if only she would return to them...
Evdokia listened with indignation to the ardent young man... “May God punish you, who came to tempt me!” she exclaimed, and suddenly Philostratus fell dead and lay in that position until Evdokia saved him with her prayer. “Pray, and I will raise up a young man, and he will turn to Me,” she heard during a night’s sleep, and when, having woken up, she began to pray over the one whom everyone already considered dead, he stood up, as if awakening from sleep, and exclaimed: “I pray to you, blessed Eudokia, servant of the true God, accept me repentant and forgive me, because I now know what kind of merciful and powerful God you serve.” you”... This incident turned the young man to God, and was the first evidence of the gift of miracles that the Lord sent down to Evdokia as a sign that her strict, righteous life was pleasing to Him - and after that she more than once demonstrated this Divine gift and performed great miracles with her prayer.
Soon after this, the citizens of Iliopol, assuming that she kept the wealth collected by Evdokia in her monastery, wanted to take it away from her and sent an armed detachment to the monastery for this purpose. The detachment was led by the son of the city chief; Before reaching the monastery, he fell mortally ill, and returned to life only after Evdokia prayed for him. This miracle amazed the entire people and the ruler himself, who, together with a significant part of the people, then recognized the power of the Christian God and turned to him.
A few years later something similar happened again. Evdokia was summoned to trial as a Christian. Warned of help from above in a night dream, she without fear confessed her faith before the new ruler of the city who called her and was given over to torture. She endured them with imperturbable firmness and again performed miracles that turned this ruler to Christ: “Make me a Christian too!” “- he turned to Evdokia, “I see that the God whom you profess is great!”
Thus they received St. baptism the commander of the army - Diodorus, who was at the court of Eudokia, his wife and his whole house, as well as the ruler of the city Diogenes with his whole house and many people. After these events, St. Evdokia settled, at the request of Diodorus, in his house and taught newly converted Christians.
One day it happened that one youth, Zinon, was bitten by a snake and lay swollen and blackened, showing no signs of life. His mother, a widow, wept inconsolably over her only son.
Having learned about this, Evdokia said to Diodorus: “let’s go to comfort the widow, and you will see the mercy and power of our God.”
Seeing the dead youth, Evdokia again turned to Diodorus: “Now the time has come,” she told him, “for you to show your faith in God; pray and raise the dead!”...
– But I’m still too weak in faith... objected Diodorus...
– Call on the all-powerful Lord with all your soul, and He will show His mercy!
Bowing his head, with tears, Diodorus loudly cried out: “Lord God! Who has been worthy to call me, a sinner, to Thy holy faith and who has sent us this Thy servant for the salvation of our souls, hear also my unworthy prayer, knowing my undoubted faith in You! Command this lad to come to life to glorify Your name!”
And approaching the youth, he said:
“In the name of the crucified Jesus Christ, lad, arise!”
And suddenly Zinon came to life and stood up... All the witnesses to the Divine miracle believed in God.
St. Eudokia returned to her monastery and from that time on she calmly remained here for a long time, converting unbelievers and confirming believers. Thus, continuing her Christian deed, she lived to a ripe old age. After she received St. baptism, 56 years have passed. At this time, persecution of Christians arose; the ruler of the city instead of the deceased Diodorus was the enemy of Christians - Vincent. Having learned that Evdokia was successfully promoting the spread of Christianity, he condemned her to death. St. Eudokia was taken from her monastery and beheaded with a sword. It was March 1, 152.
The Church glorifies her with the following hymn:
“By intelligent righteousness, having bound your soul into the love of Christ, the corruptible and the red and the temporary have flowed into oblivion, like a disciple of the Word: by fasting the first passion, having put to death, you have put to shame the second enemy through suffering, therefore Christ vouchsafed thee a special crown, O glorious Evdokia, reverend passion-bearer, pray to Christ God to save our souls”!
Rev. our father Agapius of Vatopedi
While being a novice under one silent elder who labored on Mount Athos, in the Vatopedi monastery of Kolitsa (now defunct), St. Agapius one day went out to the sea to wash his clothes. The Turks who landed on the shore at that time, seeing the young man, captured him and then sold him in Magnesia to their fellow tribesman, with whom Agapius worked for 12 years, never leaving his shackles. The only consolation for him during all this time, the only hope was prayer. Mother of God for his release from grave captivity.
One day he saw in a dream the Mother of God turning to him with the words: “go without fear to your elder”... Waking up, Agony felt freed from his shackles and, attributing this to the miracles of the Mother of God, the great Intercessor, he boldly and immediately left his master’s house and returned to his elder on Athos. The elder, seeing him, became alarmed, thinking that Agapius had run away from his master.
“My son,” he said to him, “you deceived a man, but no one will ever deceive God; at the hour of general judgment, you will have to answer for the money that your master spent on buying you in order to have you as an assistant in his needs; therefore, if you wish to be justified, then go back to your master and serve him. By doing this, you will become a true servant of God and His faithful servant; when God enlightens your master, he himself will give you leave.
Agapius obeyed the Elder of God without question. The barbarian was surprised to see the slave unexpectedly return... - How did you leave and how did you decide to return? - he asked him.
Agapius told him the whole matter in detail. The Mohammedan was amazed by this story, which so clearly expressed the entire height of the holy Christian faith; his soul softened and rose to Divine comprehension. Soon, taking Agapius and his two sons with him, he went to the Holy Mountain to the elder Agapius and wished to receive baptism from him for himself and his children. Subsequently, they all accepted monasticism and labored worthily until their death.
Apparently, the elder monk acted against the instructions of the Mother of God Herself... But - who can explore the depths and paths of the Spirit acting in his church - the pure human soul, “interceding for the salvation of man with unspeakable sighs?” Meanwhile, was it not by the Spirit of the Lord that the elder foresaw that the instruction of the Mother of God to Agapius to “return to his elder” also combined another instruction - to win the souls of unbelievers in the same way... Agapius, who had not abandoned his master, could not have accomplished such a significant return to his master, crowned with such good fruits... Through this return, the greatest truth of the elder, characteristic of him as a Christian, was revealed, the greatest obedience of Agapius, obedience coupled with complete selflessness, which turned out to be available to him as a Christian, and which so amazed his master that he was inflamed with the desire to get closer with his children to the source of such spiritual beauty and... exchanged his freedom for slavery to Christ or the only true, saving freedom...
The wonderful Domnina, writes Blessed Theodoret, was jealous of the life of St. Marona 1. She built herself a small hut covered with straw in her mother's garden. With constant tears she wet not only her knees, but also her hair-cloth, such clothing covered her body. At the crowing of the roosters she goes to the church of God, which stands not far away, and walking with others, men and women, she praises the Lord. She does this not only at the beginning of the day, but also at the end of it. She reverently honors the Church of God and teaches others to do the same. For this reason, she cares a lot about him and persuades her mother and brothers to use their property for the church. Her food is lentils soaked in water. Her body is withered and half-dead, but it endures any kind of labor. Thin skin, like parchment, covers the bones, as fat and meat are destroyed by labor. She can be seen by everyone who wants to, both men and women, but she does not look at anyone’s face and does not show hers to others: the veil covers her, going down to her knees 2 . Her voice is sonorous and expressive, but her words are always accompanied by tears.
When she took my right hand and laid it on her eyes, her hand always fell down, wet with tears, so that tears dripped from her hand. The one who has such a wealth of philosophy, crying, sighing, groaning, what word can adequately praise? Strong love for God gives birth to these tears. But although she is busy with this day and night, she does not abandon other virtues. She takes care of those who come to her. Although, by her order, they live with the village priest, she herself provides everything they need. The property of her mother and brothers is open to her for expenses, but the mother and brothers are blessed by heaven. When I come to that direction, which is to the south of us, she sends bread, and fruits, and moistened lentils” 3 .
Since at the time Theodoret wrote about St. Domnina, she was, according to him, still alive, although she had already reached full spiritual maturity, and he wrote the God-loving history in 440, then it must be assumed that St. Domnina ended her ascetic life around 445 4.
† Venerable Martyrius of Zelenetsky
The Monk Martyrius, in the world of Mina 5, was born in Velikiye Luki from the famous citizen Stephen. He had barely learned the psalter when his parents died at the age of 10. The reverent priest of the Annunciation Church loved the kind orphan, often seeing him in church, and taught him goodness. A few years later, the widowed priest took monastic vows at the monastery of the unmercenary; Mina visited him here too, and visited him even when Bogolep was appointed builder of the Velikolutsk St. Sergius Monastery. In this monastery, Mina, having distributed all his property, took monastic vows from his mentor and was named Martyrius. The builder entrusted Martyrius with the church keys, and therefore Martyrius had to be the first to enter the church and the last to leave. Velikolutsk resident Athanasius, tonsured with the name Avramia, was entrusted to the leadership of Martyrius and replaced his work on the church. Having lived for 7 years under the mentor Bogolep, Martyrius wished to live in solitude in a deserted place, 60 miles from Luk. The mentor sent him advice to return to the hostel, since here he could be useful to others.
In bewilderment, he went to venerate the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God and the wonderworker Abramius. In Smolensk, the Monk Abramius appeared to him in a dream vision with his disciple the Monk Ephraim and said: “You must live in the desert, where the Lord and His Most Pure Mother will indicate.” In the Tikhvin monastery he was delighted to meet with his disciple Avramie, who, being sick, was healed by the Mother of God and remained in Tikhvin 6 . Bored by the crowds of pilgrims in Tikhvin, Martyrius asked the Lord to show him a secluded place for his exploits. Such a place was indicated at night to the disciple Martiriev by the sign of the cross-shaped dawn on the island, which from ancient times was called Green. “Martirius built himself a hut here. The surroundings of the island could not have been more wild and gloomy. There are mosses, swamps, swamps all around, and they stretch almost from Novgorod itself. Only the place where Martyrius settled was a significant hill, covered with pleasant greenery, and it was this that gave the place the name Green. The strict hermit found what he was looking for and thanked the Lord.
The pious villager Joseph brought him food from time to time, and sometimes, confused by his thoughts and vanity, he left him without it for a long time. Martyrius fasted and prayed. In time they learned about the hermit of the Green Island. No matter how many monastic monasteries there were in the Novgorod region at that time, there were none in the wilderness where Martyrius settled 7 . Therefore, having learned about Martyria, sincere ascetics rushed to its desert with special fervor. And there was a lot to learn from the strict hermit. Martyrius built a chapel and cells with a fence. The pious Novgorod boyar Theodore Syrkov also learned about the monk; Through his zeal, the Church of the Annunciation was built in the Martyrian Hermitage, and the brethren begged the elder to take upon himself the rank of priesthood and authority over them with the title of abbot. This was no later than 1570. This year, the benefactor of the Martyriy monastery, boyar Syrkov, who built up to 12 monasteries at his own expense and provided them with income, received a martyr’s crown for his love for the Lord - killed by Tsar the Terrible.
Near and far people came to the Green Desert with love to listen to the instructions of the Monk Martyrius. But blessed Martyrius in his wilderness had to struggle for a long time with needs and poverty. In the scribe book of 1582 we read: “in the Mikhailovsky Pogost on the Ladoga Pogore, a monastery called the Green Hermitage, on an island, is being built again in a black forest. In the monastery there is the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, another church - the Annunciation with a meal, both wooden; in the monastery hegumen Martyrius and 12 elders; the fence around the monastery is wooden; behind the monastery there is a cow yard and stables; there is no arable land" 8 . As you can see, wealth is not great. Martyrius endured needs and grew in spiritual life. According to the Apostle, from sorrow patience was born in him, through patience he acquired experience, through experience he formed hope, that hope which leaves no one in shame (Rom. 5:3-4). This is what the monk tells about the heavenly consolation that visited him.
“I slept in my cell, in a closet,” he writes, and in a dream I saw the Most Pure Mother of God in a maiden form: she was beautiful in appearance: and I have never seen such a beautiful maiden among people; tender-faced and beautiful; black eyebrows, medium-sized nose, bent (pohil). On her head was a golden crown, decorated with multi-colored stones. It is impossible for the human mind to comprehend Her beauty, nor to express it in language. He sits in my cell, on a bench, in a large corner where the icons stand. And it was as if I had come out of the closet and was standing before Her, looking at Her diligently, not taking my eyes off Her beauty. She, the Queen and Mother of God, looks at me. Her eyes were full of tears, almost falling onto Her pure face. And suddenly She became invisible. I woke up and was terrified. He got up and left the closet; I lit a candle from the lamp and wanted to see the Most Pure Virgin, whether She was sitting in the cell where she was sitting. I approached the most pure image of Hodegetria with a candle and realized that the Most Pure Mother of God had truly appeared to me in the form as She was written on my cell icon” 9 . – In the last years of his life, the blessed one became famous for the gift of healings.
In 1595, on his way to Moscow, he stopped in Tver. Tsar Simeon Bekbulatovich, who was then living in Tver, had a very sick son, and the tsar, having learned about Martyria, asked him to come and pray for his dying son. The monk placed the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God on John’s chest, and the sick man was healed. After that, the grateful king was the most zealous benefactor of the Martyriev Monastery 10. A year and a half before his death, the holy elder devoted himself to silence and prayer; having dug a grave with his own hands and placed a coffin in it, he came here to cry and pray. Finally, having received the Holy Mysteries, he rested peacefully on March 1, 1603. The relics of the Monk Martyrius rest in a tomb built by the Novgorod Metropolitan Cornelius, who was formerly the abbot of Zelenets, who, honoring this saint of God, described his life and composed a service to him 11.
His memory is February 14th.
And another Antiochian virgin, the daughter of a rich nobleman, who was robbed naked in her coffin by a young man, says to him: “What justification before God will you, unfortunate one, give for your behavior towards me, whose face none of the strangers have seen in my life?” Spiritual meadow, page 76. Thus, the distinction of the Syrian votive virgins was a long veil. This can be seen most clearly in Maran and Cyrus.

According to the Service Menaion, according to the prologue and short menologue, the memory of Saint Domnina is March 1. According to Basil’s Menologue, it is February 28. The latter says: “St. Domnina, born in Cyrus from rich and pious parents, devoted herself entirely to pious deeds.” According to an eyewitness, the house of the mother and pious brothers was in the south of the Kirsk diocese, and not in the mountains itself. Kira.
In the Greek Menaion on January 5 we read:
“On the same (5) day the Venerable Domna dies in peace.
For the contempt of the earthly and the flesh, Domnina, you will be given a heavenly inheritance.
On the same (5) day the Monk Tatiana dies in peace.
Tatiana once melted in posts.
Now he is with the angels, the friends of fasting.”
Who are these saints Domnina and Tatiana? When and where did they labor? Isn’t St. Tatiana the same person as Deaconess Tatiana the Martyr, remembered on January 12? But she died a martyr, and not in peace.
