Holy Martyr Juliana the Virgin and 630 Muchch. with her
Juliania, the daughter of noble and wealthy parents, pagans who lived in Bithynia at the end of the 3rd century, was still betrothed by them to a young man, also of a noble family, and a pagan, named Eleusia.
Meanwhile, having come of age, she had the opportunity to be enlightened by faith in the true God, having heard a sermon about Christ, and then she was afraid to unite her fate with an idolater. Therefore, when the time came for her to get married, she wrote to Eleusius that if he did not believe in God-Christ, Whom she served, then let him look for another bride.
Having informed Juliania’s parents about this, Eleusius, together with them, convinced her to renounce her faith in the crucified Christ, but no requests or convictions could persuade the young Christian to become an apostate from the One to whom she surrendered irrevocably from the moment she recognized Him.
Driven to rage by what seemed to him an incomprehensible stubbornness on the part of Juliania, her father treated her with brutal cruelty, beat her mercilessly and, finally, presented the beaten woman to Eleusia, who at that time already held the rank of eparch, for trial. At first he was delighted at the opportunity to take revenge on the bride who had rejected him, but touched when he again saw Juliana, who was distinguished by her striking beauty, Eleusius again began to beg her to unite with him, promising her never to force her to worship pagan gods...
“I cannot be your wife until you become a Christian...” Juliana answered him.
“I would agree to this, my beloved,” Eleusius objected, “if I were not afraid that, having learned about this, the emperor would deprive me not only of my dignity, but also of my life...
“If you fear your mortal and temporary king, then how can I not fear my immortal King, who rules over all people and over earthly kings, and how can I unite in marriage with His enemy? Turn to my God, otherwise, do with me as you wish... no torture will force me to abandon Him...
And indeed, neither pleas, nor threats, nor the most inhuman tortures could defeat the intrepid confessor of the name of Christ. Naked, tied with ropes, they first beat her with dry sinews, then hung her by her hair, so that the skin and hair were separated from her head; at the same time they tormented her body with a sharp iron, and threw her tortured, barely alive, into prison. But the martyr’s heart burned with prayer, and an unearthly joy overcame her bodily pain. The next day, Juliana was again taken to torture, but supported by truly Divine power, she remained unharmed in the fire.
Amazed by the supernatural strength with which the martyr endured trials that exceeded human strength, the people praised the God of Juliana, who works miracles, and, inspired by delight, confessed Christ, the only true God. There were up to 630 people who believed during the suffering of Juliana. All of them were immediately beheaded with the sword, thus receiving baptism in their blood... Finally, Juliana was beheaded, as others believe, in 290, and others in 304. Her remains were buried by Christians, and a church was built over them 285.
Glory to St. much Juliania is great in the West, and parts of her relics are found in many countries. And the Orthodox Church honors her, singing to her:
“The virgin was purified with kindness, O maiden, and the crowns of torment were now crowned with Juliana, giving healing and salvation to those in need and illness; To those who approach Your race, Christ exudes Divine grace and eternal life.”
Acts of St. The Martyr Juliana and the 500 husbands and 160 wives who suffered with her are considered very ancient, written before the invasion of the Longobards 286.
Memory of Saint Themistocles, a native of Myra Libya and a shepherd of sheep. During the persecution, Decius (249–251) was asked about a certain Dioscorides. hid in the mountains from his tormentors, did he see him, responded negatively, confessed himself to be a Christian, was captured and tortured (beaten in the belly, dragged along a sharp iron) and finally beheaded.
† Repose of St. Peter, Metropolitan and Wonderworker of Russia
Blessed Peter, writes M. Cyprian 287, was born in the land of Volyn from reverent parents. His father was called Theodore 288. His mother, a pious and God-fearing woman, had a vision before the birth of Peter, when he was still a baby in her womb. At dawn on Sunday, she dreamed that she was holding in her hands a lamb, between whose horns a tree had grown, magnificently dressed with leaves, with many flowers and fruits, and candles were burning between the fruits, and a fragrance emanated from them. Waking up, the mother was perplexed about the wonderful vision. Subsequently, the Lord justified the vision, enriching her son with His gifts. Until the age of seven, Peter grew up in his father’s house and then his parents sent him to study books. He studied diligently; but the teaching was not successful. This saddened both parents and son. Once in a dream he sees a man in holy clothes, who, standing near him, said: “My child! open your mouth;" when he opened them, the saint touched his tongue and, blessing him, seemed to pour sweetness into his mouth. The boy woke up, but did not see anyone.
From the time that his teacher wrote, he studied it easily and in a short time surpassed his comrades in success.
At the age of twelve, the youth retired to one of the monasteries close to the place of his birth, and was accepted by the abbot as one of the brethren; here he was obedient to his spiritual father in everything; Having gained strength, he carried water on his shoulders, washed the brothers’ hair shirts, in winter and summer, without abandoning his obedience: he was the first to come to church when the church bell rang and stood in the church without leaning against the wall. - By the will of the abbot, he was awarded the deaconate and then the presbytery. He also learned the scriptures of St. icons This was a very pleasant experience for him. While painting the saints, he shed tears of prayer and tenderness, thinking about his poverty and the height of God’s holiness. – The Man of God diligently painted icons, and the abbot distributed them to the brethren and Christ-loving laity who visited the monastery; This consoled some and encouraged them to pray, while others were disposed to do good to the monastery by donating what they needed for life.
After many years of exploits in the hostel, with the blessing of the abbot, he left the monastery for exploits in solitude. “Having walked around the surrounding area, he found a silent place on the river. Rate. “Here he built himself a cell and endured a lot of labor. Here he erected a church in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ and set up cells for the brethren who came to him 289. - Quite a few monks gathered to him in a short time; like a loving father, he cared about their salvation, instructing them not only by word, but even more by example, presenting himself not as the elder of the brethren, but as the last of all. “He was never irritated with those who sinned, but quietly exhorted with touching words. “He was so merciful that he never let anyone ask in the name of God or a stranger leave empty-handed, but gave everything he could find.” If he had nothing else, he gave away his icons, or gave away his hair shirt. – The glory of his righteous life reached the prince and nobles of the Volyn and Galician countries, which then blossomed with glory and wealth. “The prince and boyars marveled at the man of God and came with love to listen to his instructions.
– When Metropolitan Maxim of Vladimir visited the Russian land, teaching the people according to the charter, the man of God Peter and his brethren came to receive the blessing from the saint and brought him the image of the Dormition of the Lady, which he himself painted; The saint lovingly accepted the image of the Most Pure One, decorated it with gold and expensive stones, and until the end of his life he reverently kept it in his cell, day and night praying to this icon for the salvation of the Russian land entrusted to him.”
When the pious Saint Maximus reposed in Vladimir, Abbot Gerontius dared to admire the sanctity, while every gift is given by the Heavenly Father. - Possessed by the disease of lust for power and self-indulgence, he took the holy utensils, the pastoral staff and the icon that Blessed Peter painted, and went with some dignitaries to Constantinople. The Galician prince Yuri was indignant at the self-will of Gerontius, especially since in Volyn, dissatisfied with the removal of the see from Kyiv to distant Vladimir, they wanted to see the metropolitan somewhere in the south; Prince Yuri especially wanted the metropolis to be in Galich. Prince Yuri was powerful: owning all of Galicia, he was called the Tsar of Rus' 290. - He asked for the blessing. Peter to go to Constantinople and ask the Patriarch for a metropolitan for the south. Long bliss. Peter did not agree to this, and when he agreed, he did not know that he himself had been assigned a high rank. The prince secretly wrote a petition to His Holiness for the ordination of Peter to the holy throne; for greater success in his business, he sent a special ambassador to the patriarch along with Abbot Peter.
Peter and Gerontius went to Constantinople from different seaside marinas. Gerontius's voyage was unhappy: a storm arose and the winds delayed the ship's progress. - Petrov’s ship, sailing along another strip of the Black Sea, was favored by a calm fair wind, and he soon reached Constantinople. – During a storm at night, the Mother of God appeared to Gerontius and sternly said: “You are working in vain; you will not receive the rank of hierarch; the one who wrote Me, the Ratsky abbot Peter, will be elevated to the throne of the Russian Metropolis.” - Gerontius woke up in fear and then said to those with him: “We are working in vain, we will not get what we want.” Patriarchal See of St. Sophia was then occupied by Athanasius, a wonderful man in virtues. “When blessed Peter appeared to him, the church was filled with fragrance. – The Patriarch understood in spirit that this was for the blessed. Peter and received him with love. Having learned the reason for his arrival, he convened a council; Blessed Peter was proclaimed Metropolitan not only of southern Russia, but of all Russia. - “I heard, says St.
Cyprian, from some in Constantinople, who told me for the truth that during the dedication, Peter’s face was illuminated, as if by the rays of the sun, so that all those who served with the patriarch were amazed. The High Hierarch, convinced of the holiness of the man of God, prophetically said to the entire council: “Truly by the command of God a wondrous man has come to us, and by the grace of God he will well shepherd the flock entrusted to him.” – Gerontius sailed to Constantinople a few days after the dedication of Peter. “He involuntarily told the patriarch his dream. The Patriarch, having made him a stern rebuke, conveyed the blessed. Peter's holy utensils with a staff and an icon of the Mother of God.
St. Peter arrived from Constantinople to Kyiv in the same year, 1308, in which he was ordained, and the next year he moved to Vladimir, where his predecessor had established the department of metropolitan of all Russia. Here in June 1309 he dedicated Novgorod. archbishop David. “He then went to inspect the dioceses and at the end of July he was in Novgorod. “We’ll see it in the winter of next year.” in Bryansk. The appanage prince of this city was expelled by his uncle Svyatoslav; but, having begged help from the khan, he brought the Tatars with him against his uncle. The meek saint urged Svyatoslav to share his reign with his nephew, or to completely abandon Bryansk, so as not to shed Christian blood. Svyatoslav wanted neither one nor the other, and lost his life in the battle. The Tatars burst into the city, and St. Peter was forced to seek safety in the church 291.
While the saint so lovingly cared for the peace and salvation of his flock, Bishop Andrei of Tver rebelled against him. In all likelihood, Andrei, who came from a family of Lithuanian princes, wanted to occupy the metropolitan's chair. The nobility of his family and the displeasure of some with the metropolitan elected by the south supported his dream of a higher rank. - He secretly sent a denunciation against St. to the patriarch. Petra. The Patriarch was amazed by the denunciation, but sent a trusted representative to investigate the matter on the spot. - “The Most Holy Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Russia!” This is how Holy Athanasius wrote, “beloved brother in the Holy Spirit and co-servant of our humility! By the election of the Holy Spirit you have been appointed shepherd and teacher of the verbal flock of Christ. But from your tribe and your region, heavy words about you have reached my ears. They confused my thoughts. Try to clean up and fix the matter.” St. Peter accepted temptation with hope in God, the protector of the innocent. A cathedral was formed in northern Pereyaslavl. Among others, there were “the God-loving Bishop of Rostov Simeon and Rev. Prokhor, then abbot.”
This was no doubt in the second half of 1310, since blessed. At the beginning of 1311, n. Athanasius had already renounced the see and Abbot Prokhor, who was present at the council, was ordained Bishop of Rostov in 1311. At the cathedral there were, in addition to other princes, the sons of V. Prince Alexander and Dimitri. But the pious c. Prince Mikhail did not want to witness the humiliation of the High Hierarch of Russia 292. Book Kurbsky wrote that in. The prince knew the content of Andreev’s denunciation against St. Peter, but he did not consider himself entitled to consider this case 293. When the denunciation was read at the council, there was great excitement among those present. Against those few who wanted to trust the denunciation, others rebelled with complete indignation, pointing out the absurdity of the accusation, obvious to those who knew the saint of God. “The meek saint, wanting to stop the excitement, said: “Brothers! I'm no better than a prophet. Ions; if because of me there is such confusion, throw me out from among you.” “Everyone demanded that the denunciator either prove the truth of the denunciation or be severely condemned for slander.
- The frivolous Andrei saw himself in a disadvantageous position: the entire cathedral rebelled against the slanderer. But St. took him under his protection. Peter. “Peace be with you, child,” said the saint. “It’s not your fault, but the ancient hater of people, the devil. From now on, beware of lies. May God forgive you the past” 294.
After the innocence of St. Peter's was solemnly recognized by the cathedral, St. The metropolitan proposed to the council about the illegal actions of Bishop Ishmael of Saransk. The chronicle, while saying that Ishmael was defrocked, does not show for what faults he was punished 295 . - For that, blessed. Theognostus writes that St. M. Peter wrote a letter to Black Yar about the boundaries of the Sarai and Ryazan dioceses and that the definition of M. Maxim 296 was announced on the same subject. After this, it is certain that Ishmael, contrary to the conciliar decision, for selfish calculations, included in his diocese the Churches belonging to the Ryazan diocese, and did not want to work in his new field, along the Khoper and the lower reaches of the Don. Saint Peter recognized such actions of Ishmael as all the more criminal because in the lower reaches of the Don Orthodoxy was threatened by the machinations of papism: soon after (in 1318) the pope appointed his bishop to Kafa (Feodosia), and his diocese extended from the Black Sea to Russia and from Bulgaria to the Volga 297 . Saint Peter, in place of the deposed Ishmael, consecrated (in 1312) “Bishop of Saraya and the Don countries” Barsanuphius 298.
In 1312, Khan Tokhtagu died and Uzbek, who converted to Mohammedanism, ascended the throne. It was necessary to appear to the new khan along with the lord. Prince Metropolitan to ask for confirmation of the rights of the clergy, especially since these rights were subjected to various insults from the wild tyranny of even Christians. In addition, it was necessary to prevent the machinations of the pope's ambassadors to the khan. The saint's embassy was crowned with success. The saint was received by Uzbek with honor and, without Mongolian delay, was released from the Horde 299, and from c. book Mikhail sent a gracious letter from the khan to Metropolitan Peter 300.
It is more than likely that this letter was drawn up according to a note left by the saint in the Horde of Prince. To Michael: this can be seen from the calculation of objects and persons of the church department and from the indication of the charters of princes and church laws. – In terms of its content, this is the most remarkable of the letters that were given by the khans for the Russian Church. – It not only protects the personal freedom of clergy with the right to own property, but also protects the freedom of the holy faith by threatening the death penalty to those who offend it, and recognizes the independence of church governance. - This is a wonderful certificate!
“Uzbek word to all our princes by the power and mercy of the Most High God 301... Let no one offend the cathedral Church of Metropolitan Peter, his people and the people of the church in Rus'. Let them not touch either estates or people. Metropolitan Peter leads his people, judges them and controls them in all cases: robbery, red-handed, theft; Metropolitan Peter alone is in charge of all matters, or whomever he orders. - Let everyone obey him, let the church clergy listen to him, in accordance with their original laws and according to the previous charters of our kings. Let no one interfere with the metropolitan's church property; it is God's property. If anyone stands up and breaks our word, he will be under the wrath of God and will be punished by death from us. The Metropolitan has the right to calmly and freely arrange, judge and put in order church affairs, himself or through proxies. Neither we, nor our children, nor the princes of our kingdom and all our uluses will interfere with anything church or metropolitan, nor in cities, nor in volosts, nor in villages, nor in fisheries, nor in borti, nor in lands, nor in gardens, nor in mills, nor in herds.
All church estates, people, clergy, all old codes and laws are in charge of the metropolitan, or whomever he orders. – Let the Metropolitan live peacefully and pray to God for us and our children. We rule and favor, just like the previous kings who gave them labels. And we use the same labels so that God will have mercy on us. – We protect what is God’s and do not take away what is given to God. - Whoever takes what is God will be guilty before God, the wrath of God will be on him and the death penalty will be imposed on us. When our Baskaks, customs tribute officers, scribes go: let all the churches of the metropolitan, and all his people, archimandrites, abbots, priests and all church clergy remain inviolable and without insult under this label of ours. - Will they take tribute for us or something else, tamga, plow, yam, bridging, fishing, or we will order to gather an army for our service: let no one take from the cathedral church of Metropolitan Peter, from his people and from all his clergy. “They pray to God for us, protect and strengthen our army.” – Who did not know before us that by the power and will of the immortal God everyone lives and fights? Everyone knows this.
According to the charters of the former kings, we also issue a charter, without changing the previous path. What is the law they have and according to the law of churches, monasteries, chapels: let them not spoil it or blaspheme it. Whoever blasphemes or condemns the faith, there is no excuse for him, will die an evil death. If priests and deacons have a brother and son living with them in the same house and eating bread alone, then our salary extends to them too. - If someone left them, does not serve the metropolitan and lives separately, only with the name of the priest: let him give tribute. Whoever prays for us with a wrong heart: it is a sin for him. This is how our word established it. Such a fortress was approved in the year of the hare (1315) of the first month of autumn on the 4th of Old (September 19:00)” 302.
In essence, the khan's letters did not save anyone from the unbridled tyranny of the wild and proud steppe inhabitants: only the sword restrained them. Nevertheless, the letters, as a matter of the law of the Mongols themselves, served as some protection for the saint. faith. Therefore, the reverent saint expected the letter as the mercy of God 303. – Through his prayers, even before the label of Uzbek was delivered to Russia, he was consoled by a sure sign of God’s mercy to distressed Russia - the appearance of the Mother of God icon on Tolga, which happened in 1314 304.
Saint Peter took pastoral care of the establishment of piety in his large flock. Despite his weakness, or the dangers of the road at that time, he traveled around the dioceses, instructing everyone in the faith and holy life. – “He explained, says a contemporary, the Gospel and Apostolic Scriptures; like Vasily Bel., John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian, this is how he proposed the teaching” 305. This, obviously, applies to both the written and oral instructions of the saint.
The great shepherd at one time had the need to expose the self-will of people in the faith. “At that time, says Blessed Cyprian, the heretic Seith appeared, who preached something contrary to the Church of Christ and the Orthodox faith. The saint also denounced him for his stubbornness against St. cursed the truth, and he disappeared.” Although according to the chronicles the teachers of Mohammedanism 306 are constantly called Seites, and Uzbek zealously distributed alkoran among the Tatars; but the name of a heretic and excommunication from the Church shows that the convicted St. Peter was a confessor of Christianity who perverted Christian teaching, and the name Seita was given to him, of course, because of his fascination with certain thoughts of Mohammedanism. According to some news, Seit was the Novgorod archpriest and preached against monastic virginity with such force that many of the monks left monasticism and entered into marriage 307. According to the news of the blessed Prokhora, the saint of the “heretic, came to the place and cursed him.” - This means that the heretic spread his teachings and outraged people not where the saint lived.
Peter: this confirms the news about Seit as the Novgorod archpriest. According to Nestor, it is also clear that Seit was denounced during the review of the dioceses by the metropolitan. So the unfortunate archpriest became carried away by the Mohammedan passion for sensual life. The name Seita is an apt name for him and the saint’s anathema fittingly fell on him and the monks carried away by him 308. Of course, this is the work of a zealot of the pure saint. of faith St. Joseph had in mind when, mourning the time of the Judaizers, he said: “The thundering nightingales, the Divine saints and the great wonderworkers Peter and Alexy, who in the church garden filled our ears with the teachings of Orthodoxy, flew away from us.”
It is unknown in what year “Peter Metropolitan Alexin bought the house of St. Mother of God" 310. But the purchase meant that land with buildings was acquired, partly for the temporary residence of the saint, partly for local spiritual administration. Bishop Prokhor, speaking about the condemnation of Seit, continues: “The saint began to strive even more in fasting and works of mercy, instructing the priests how to shepherd the sheep of the flock of Christ, as well as the monks and monkworts, passing through the cities.” - This means that after the condemnation of Seit, he again inspected the dioceses of Russia to teach instructions in faith and piety 311.
Chapter 77 of the hundred-glavnik mentions “about widowed priests the teachings of our father Peter, the Metropolitan of All Russia, the Wonderworker,” and proposes a rule from it: “if a priest dies and goes to a monastery and cuts his hair, he has his own priesthood; If he has to abide and love worldly pleasures, let him not serve. If anyone does not listen to my writing, he will not be blessed and those like him will commune with him. Whoever is a priest gets drunk, so that the priest of Christ will not appear.” – At the council of 1503 they also testified to the “teaching of Metropolitan Peter” that widowed priests and deacons should not serve 312.
Two more teachings of St. Peter are known, in the form of district epistles.
In the first, the saint urges Christians to spend the time of fasting in strict abstinence and prayer and to certainly partake of St. Tain. Addressing clergy, he writes: “teach your spiritual children to go to the Church of God, command them to cry about their sins before God; Let them fast reverently, without singing, without overeating and drunkenness, and partake of the Holy Communion. Gifts every year. Who does not accept St. Gifts: priests! do not bless them, do not accept prosphora from them, and do not go to their house; if one who does not receive the Gifts appears at a feast or comes to a brotherhood: you, priests, send them out. – He is not a Christian who does not accept Christ’s Gift... Children! honor your relatives, father and mother, and you will live long; whoever scolds or beats his father or mother will die an evil death - the death of sinners is cruel, says David... Perform baptism, according to the legend of St. The apostles, do not pour water on them, but immerse them in water three times”... Further, the clergy is prohibited from trading and giving money on interest, instructions are given on marriage and fights are strictly prohibited. “Honor your spiritual father: he is the seal of your body.
Upon entering the church, stand with fear, listen to the reading of the Apostle and the Gospel and everything that is sung. Who says in church: it is the devil who whispers in your ears... Woe to the one who does not accept St. Gifts! What does he hope for? He seems to be a man of God, but does not accept the body of Christ?.. These are dogs” 313. Flattering greetings to the schismatics of our time!
In another teaching, the saint says to the priests: “Understand, children, to what dignity you have been called by God! The Apostle Paul writes: everyone in the calling in which he was called, let him abide in it (1 Cor. 7:20). You, children, are called guardians of the Church, shepherds of the verbal sheep, for whom Christ shed His saving blood. Be, children, true shepherds, and not hirelings who eat milk and clothe themselves with wool, but do not care for the sheep (Ezek. 34:31). Those who do not enter the sheepfold by the door are also not shepherds, but thieves and robbers (John 10:1). Don't follow that, kids. Imitate the true shepherd Christ, as He Himself said in the Gospel: I am the good Shepherd, I lay down My life for the sheep (John 10:15). Be, children, an example for your flock, according to the word of the Savior; He told the Apostles: you are the light of the world, you are the salt of the earth. So let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:11,14,16). First of all, one must shine with virtues - meekness and humility and beware of all obscene deeds with which the world is tempted.
“Woe to the man by whom temptation comes,” said the Savior (Matthew 18:17). Guard yourself with the fear of God; Cut off, children, from your hearts every passion harmful to the soul: anger, rage, envy, hatred, drunkenness - the root of evil, and laughter. It is said: Let not every corrupt word proceed out of your mouth (Eph.5:29). And the Savior says: by your words you have been justified, and by your words you have been condemned (Matthew 12:37). Be, children, a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, bearing spiritual fruits and holiness. Practice reading St. books and teaching day and night, according to the word of the prophet: you will learn in the law of the Lord day and night and (Ps. 1:2)... How great is your name: so should your deeds be... A priest must pray to God first for himself, then for human sins, and he must teach spiritual children the fear of God, repentance of sins, love, meekness, humility, alms. Do not leave your children without penance, but assign to each one according to his strength and according to his sin. It is necessary to knit on time and release on time. Teach your children to avoid fornication and drunkenness, sorcery, sorcery, and greed for growth, so that they do not become slaves of sin.
- If so, children, do as I wrote to you, according to the law of God: then you can say before God: Lord! behold, we and the children whom You gave us... All the blessings of this world mean nothing before God in comparison with the human soul. Therefore, for God’s sake, try with all your might to save yourself and your flock... And I ask you, saints, to pray for my unworthiness and for my badness” 314.
It was hard for the holy high priest to look at the stubborn and unscrupulous struggle of Prince Yuri with the blessed Prince Mikhail of Tverskoy. The saint, of course, did not leave Yuri without admonitions, especially since, by the grace of Yuri, the Tatars devastated Russia more than once. But Yuri was not the type to listen to the saint, and he brought St. Prince Michael until his martyrdom 315. To the saint's new sorrow, the pagan Gediminas took possession of Volyn and Kiev in 1321 316. – During the years of so many troubles and sorrows, the saint of God perfected himself in humility, which was his favorite virtue and distinction of the spirit 317. Feeling his powerlessness before the atrocities of the strong, he betrayed himself and the Church of Christ to the protection of the Almighty and with the tears of his heart he prayed for the best to the omnipotent Goodness.
Only with the pious Prince John Danilovich did the saint find rest for his soul. He lived constantly in Moscow even under his brother Yuri. Yuri, even when he became the Grand Duke, did not live in Moscow - he either fought with the Tver prince, then lived in Novgorod and tinkered with the Germans there, or groveled in the Horde 318. The panagia of St. is still intact. Petra, golden, semi-oval, with lalas on the edges and with onyx in the middle; The image of the prophet is carved on the onyx. Daniel, with the Greek inscription: ό προφητης Δανιηλ, - on the other side the image of the Mother of God Hodegetria is carved in gold 319. “It is obvious that this is a gift from the pious Prince John Danilovich, presented with the desire to pray for his father. – The sakkos and epitrachelion of St. are intact. Petra. According to the ancient inventory, sakkos “arrived in 1322.” It is azure satin, woven in circles, with gold crosses on them; the mantles and sleeves are lined with pearls and decorated with silver beads with images of saints 320. This is again a princely gift. The chronicle, describing the elevation of Nikon to the rank of patriarch, says: “Peter Metropolitan, the wonderworker of Moscow and all Russia, was installed as patriarch...
The Tsar himself took the staff of Peter the Wonderworker from the patriarch's place and presented it to the patriarch in the Liturgy after the Trisagion at the royal doors 321 - According to the ancient inventory, the staff of St. Petra Chinese ebony; on it the head is framed with gilded silver, crosses are carved on the sides of the head 322. In all likelihood, in Moscow the saint had the consolation of instructing St. faith and baptize Tsarevich Berka, who left the Horde. In joy of this event, the saint presented Anikiya, the ancestor of the Anichkovs, with a panagia with relics and a ladle with the inscription: “I, the humble Metropolitan Peter of Kiev and All Rus', blessed my son Berka, the prince, and in holy baptism Anikiya, with this ladle” 323.
Power-hungry Yuri died in the horde: the Tver prince killed his father’s murderer. Yuri's body was brought to Moscow. The saint mourned the poor prince, celebrated the funeral with several archpastors, and the prince was buried near the Spassky Church. It was the first Saturday in... post, 8 Feb. 1326 On Palm Week in Moscow, the saint dedicated the blessed one. Moses as Archbishop of Novgorod 324. The saint of God, enlightened by grace, saw the great future of Moscow, although at that time it was a sparsely populated city, not the same as we see it now, notes the blessed one. Cyprian. He saw that Moscow would gather the fragmented and tormented parts of Russia under its canopy and decided to stay in Moscow forever. He loved Prince John for his piety and love for the poor. Because he constantly carried a kalita (bag) with money to distribute to the poor, he was called Kalita. St. Peter saw in him the chosen one of God and convinced him to be worthy of the great share assigned to him.
- Asking the prince to build a stone cathedral church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Moscow, the saint told him: “If you listen to me, my son, then you yourself will become famous with your family more than other princes, and your city will be famous among Russian cities; the saints will live in him, his hands will rise on the backs of his enemies, and God will be glorified in him.” - Probably at this time the perspicacious saint blessed with the cross, as Ts. says. John, “led our ancestor. book Ivan Danilovich and our entire family" 325. The great princes valued this blessing very much, passing on the cross of the miracle worker only to the heir to the throne 326. The pious Kalita hastened to make orders at the request of the saint. In August 1326 the church was founded. – Delivery of materials and work proceeded quickly; The walls of the church were quickly erected. But even more quickly the saint of God was approaching the end of his exploits. And He prepared a stone tomb for himself in the new church, near the altar. Prince John Danilovich had a dream. He imagined a high mountain with snow on top; suddenly the snow melted and disappeared.
When the prince recounted to the saint the dream that had struck him: the saint said, “the high mountain is you the prince, and the snow is me, the humble one who will soon leave this life.” – Four months after the founding of the church, the saint passed (December 21, 1326) into a blessed life.
On the very day of the burial of St. Peter, which was performed by Bishop Theodosius of Lutsk when they carried the body of the saint on a bed, someone saw: the saint blessed those accompanying him on both sides from his bed. – On the 20th day after his death, a young man, weakened by his hands since the day of his birth, was healed at the saint’s tomb. Then the deaf man's hearing was restored, and the blind man's sight was restored. Other miracles followed. “More often,” says the blessed one. Cyprian, healings are carried out unnoticed. “The saint of God remains humble even after death” 327.
M. Theognostus, successor of St. Peter wrote about the miracles of the deceased saint to the patriarch. P. John responded with the following letter: “Eminent Metropolitan of all Russia, all-honorable, beloved brother in the Holy Spirit and co-servant of our humility! Grace and peace from God to your holiness! We have received the writing of your holiness, informing and confirming to us completely about the bishop who preceded you, that he was glorified by God after death and accepted by him as a sincere servant, that great miracles were performed by him and diseases of all kinds were healed. We were very happy about this spiritually and praised God. – Your Holiness asks us: what to do with such saints. relics? You yourself know what the order is for this in St. The Church of God, when she learns about such things, undoubtedly. - Let this church rite be fulfilled. - Your Holiness will honor the servant of God with sacred songs and praises, establish the same for future times, to the glory of God, who glorifies those who glorify Him. May the grace of God be with you" 328. In accordance with the will of the patriarch, the celebration of the memory of the saint was established 329.
The miracles of St. Peter of subsequent times were also recorded in chronicles 330; "St. the wonderworker Peter,” this is his usual name in the charters 331.
The relics of the saint were placed in the church in 1471; His coffin was then found destroyed by fire, but his body remained intact and unharmed. “The stone could not withstand the force of the fire,” says an eyewitness, and the relics of St. the saint, as an indication of the omnipotent power, remained unharmed” 332.
And the fruits of the pious labors of the man of God are also known by the manifestations of the power of God. This is the icon of the Mother of God in the Moscow Assumption Cathedral, painted by St. Peter; this is the same one that Abbot Peter offered to the blessed one. m. Maximu 333. The Novgorod icon of the Mother of God, his own hand, was marked by many miracles, which St. Demetrius, in 1677 334. The icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir was copied by the saint from the miraculous icon that the prince brought with him. Andrey Bogolyubsky from Vyshgorod, where she moved from the East 335. In the Pereyaslavl Church of the Exaltation, the icon of the Mother of God, painted by the saint, was sent by him to Pereyaslavl for a blessing 336.
“Govern, like a helmsman, with your prayer the numerous Russian Church, stop the storm of mental and emotional disturbances with your prayers; deliver her from all temptations and troubles, keep her whole until the end.”
“The Great Shepherd of all has revealed you, blessed one, as a shepherd and teacher of intelligent sheep. As a compassionate shepherd, seek me wandering through the mountains of destruction—I am your sheep.”337
† Suffering of St. Juliania, Princess Vyazemskaya
Blessed Princess Juliana is an example of high marital chastity 338. Her husband, Prince Simeon Mstislavich - (Ivanovich) Vyazemsky, shared the unfortunate fate of Smolensk Prince Yuri Svyatoslavich. – When Vitovt took possession of Smolensk, capturing Yuri’s wife there, Simson followed Yuri to Novgorod. V. book. Vasily Dmitrievich, whose brother Yuri was married to the daughter of the unfortunate Smolensk prince, gave Torzhok to the exiled princes. - The wife of the prince. Simeon blossomed with physical beauty, and even more spiritual beauty. The voluptuous Yuri, fueled by bestial lust, more than once wanted to desecrate her. - Either with words of strict truth, or with prayer, she kept the unfortunate man from sin. “This cannot be so: I have a husband and I value loyalty to him more than life,” said the chaste Princess Yuri. The prince decided to commit an obvious crime in his home. Among the merry feast, he killed Prince Simeon. Then he wanted to satisfy his bestial lust with unpunished violence. To sober him up and make it easier to leave, the princess stabbed the enraged man in the shoulder with a knife.
Yuri, sword in hand, caught up with the departed Juliana in the courtyard, chopped her up and ordered her to be thrown into the river. It was December 21, 1406. The vile murderer fled to the Tatars, but, not finding peace there from torment of conscience, he retired to the Ryazan hermitage, where he ended his life in bitter repentance in 1408 339.
In the spring, one paralytic wandered along the river bank and saw a body floating against the current; amazed at what he saw. he felt revival in his sick body and heard a voice: “man of God! go to Torzhok, to the cathedral church, tell the archpriest and the brethren to take Juliana’s sinful body from here and bury it at the southern door.” – The healed one happily hurried to fulfill the order of the one who had appeared. Accompanied by a large crowd, St. the body was transferred to the cathedral, and here many sick people received healing.
In 1598, the cathedral deacon John wanted to personally examine the relics of St. princesses. He fasted for 40 days and then began to dig up the coffin; but a fire suddenly bursting out of the ground burned him, and he fell exhausted. “Don’t work in vain, father! there was a voice to him; You should not see my body until it is the will of God.” The deacon lay relaxed for two months and received healing at the tomb of the martyr princess. – In 1811, during the second week of Lent, the wife of the cathedral archpriest Artemy lost her mind and sight; She suffered and suffered a lot. On the day of remembrance of St. A cathedral prayer service was performed for the princess and the sick woman was freed from her illness. Three years later, during the dismantling of the dilapidated cathedral, a stone coffin of blessings was opened. Princess Juliana, and streams of miraculous healings began to flow. More than 50 such healings are recorded in a book kept in the cathedral for cancer of St. princess-martyr 340.
Let us repeat the instructions of St. the scriptures that the blessed one revered so sacredly. Princess: “Flee fornication. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit living in you, which you have from God, and is no longer your own? You were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:18-20). “Let marriage be honorable for all and the bed undefiled: fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Heb. 13:4). “The adulterer destroys his soul through the stupidity of his heart. He accumulates dishonor and disgrace for himself, and his dishonor cannot be erased” (Prov. 6:32-33).
† Repose of Procopius the Fool of Vyatka
Blessed Procopius was a contemporary of St. Tryphon of Vyatka. He acquired the salvation of his soul through voluntary foolishness. - In those days, quite a few appeared with the name of holy fools. – But on every path of salvation, purity of intentions and fidelity of conscience to death are required. Otherwise Patr. Joasaph I in 1636 complained about holy fools: “some walk, he wrote, in the form of a desert person and in black robes and chains, with disheveled hair,” but not for the Lord and not in the Lord 341. The Second Council of 1667 condemned the same people: “those who pretend to be reverent are not the same, they live in the middle of cities and villages in the form of a hermit and recluse, hairy, and in a monastic retinue, others are shackled in irons, and naked and barefoot they walk around the cities and villages in the world, for the sake of vanity, so that they may receive glory from the people and they are revered as saints, to the delight of the simple and ignorant" 342. – It is destruction of the soul, and not salvation, when they put on the image of piety only in order to more freely feed their passions. Nor are they saved when, having begun the work in the spirit, they finish it in the flesh. He who endures to the end is saved. Blazh.
Procopius of Vyatka, like Procopius of Ustyug, having taken the yoke of foolishness for Christ alone, for Christ bore it to death: to death he endured the sorrows of self-love, wounded either by ridicule, then by abuse, or by the coldness of people; He made his flesh suffer to death from both lack of food and changes in weather. He rested blissfully on December 21st. 1627 His relics rest in the Assumption Trifonov Monastery, exuding healing 343.
It is believed that Sophia the Roman, a former witness to the martyrdom of St. Juliana.

What he was like for Christians can be seen from the history of St. book Mikhail Tverskoy. See November 22. His label, in his own words, is imitation of the example of previous khans, otherwise involuntary obedience to the yasse of Chinggis, the state law of the Mongols. On the basis of this law, Russia’s submission to the Mongols under Batu was promised, and Batu’s successors could not deviate from this. G. Kostomarov (northern Russian People's Praction 2, 268) deigns to call the efforts of the saint, forced by necessity and beneficial for thousands of poor farmers, “asking for the favors and protection of strong non-Christians.” - Frivolity!

Neither Prochorus nor Cyprian shows the year when the trial of Seit took place. Tatishchev (historical book 4, art. 95) talks about this in 1313. But this year the saint did not have time to examine such an important matter as the case of Seit: he then went to the Horde. According to Tatishchev, Prince helped the saint to depose the Novgorod archpriest. Ivan Danilovich Kalita. According to the chronicles (Karamz. IV, pr. 228), Kalita was in Novgorod with an army at the beginning of 1319. Based on these circumstances, it must be assumed that Seit and the Novgorod unrest he excited were calmed down in 1319.
