Procopius, a pagan Neanius, a Jerusalemite by birth, was raised by his mother in paganism and was given into the service of King Diocletian, who left him at his court. After some time, he made him a governor and sent him to Alexandria to confiscate the estates of Christians and put the Christians themselves on trial. At the same time, Neaniy remarked to the king: “I heard about those people that they revere a certain Christ, the Son of God, are firm in character and strong in their faith, so that they would rather die than make sacrifices to our gods; therefore, I think, it will be inconvenient to bend them to our laws.” Diocletian, with various defamatory words about the Christian faith, confirmed Neanias in the legality of the persecution of Christians and sent him on his way. On the road, passing Apamia, during a strong thunderstorm, Neanii saw a shiny cross in the air and heard a voice calling him to faith in Christ and saying: “With this sign, conquer your enemies!” Arriving in Scythopolis, he called a goldsmith and ordered him to make a cross in the likeness of what he had seen. The master refused to make a cross as a Christian sign; but having received assurance that no one would know about it, he secretly made a cross according to the plan and words of the governor. When the cross was made, an image of three faces with a Hebrew inscription suddenly appeared on it; On the top part the Lord the Savior is depicted, on the sides are the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The voivode asked: whose faces are these? but the master replied that he did not know, and said that he could not erase the images in any way. Then Neaniy, realizing the Divine power in the cross, bowed to the cross, kissed it and began to keep it with him. When he arrived in Jerusalem, the citizens asked him to deliver him from the surrounding gangs of robbers who were robbing travelers and kidnapping women. Neanii and his army chased the predators, defeated them and returned all those they had taken away. When after this his mother advised him to thank the gods for the happy ending of the enterprise, then he, saying: “My God helped me,” crushed all the idols in his mother’s house. The mother went to Antioch to the king and complained about her son for contempt for the gods and disrespect for herself. Diocletiaps ordered Justus, the ruler of Palestine, to admonish those who had deviated from Christianity, and if he did not listen, to torture him. Justus arrived from Caesarea and announced the royal command; Neaniy, recognizing himself as a Christian and ready to die for his faith, untied his military belt and threw it away as a sign of renunciation of royal service and idolatry. The ruler ordered his body to be stripped, hanged and whittled with iron, and then thrown into prison. Strengthened by the heavenly phenomenon, Neaniys received St. that same night. baptism and name Procopius. Seeing the courage and valor of the confessor, some soldiers also turned to Christ, were baptized by Bishop Leontius, and the next day openly glorified Christ God. The governor ordered their heads to be cut off in the presence of Procopius. On the same day, 12 women approached the prison and said through the window to the martyr: “We too are Christ’s slaves!” They reported this to the ruler, and he ordered them to be imprisoned, and the next day to be scourged, burned with fire, and their breasts cut off. Procopius’s mother stood in the crowd and cried, seeing the fierce torment and patience of the women. Suddenly she approached the judge and said: “And I am a servant of the crucified Christ God!” In vain the ruler persuaded her to retract her words, and finally ordered her to be taken with other women to prison. Seeing his mother, Procopius was delighted and taught her St. faith and through Bishop Leontius baptized, like other women. When the confessors were then presented again for trial, they remained courageous in the faith, despite being scourged on the lips with tin rods, and were finally beheaded. Justus died suddenly, and his successor summoned Procopius to Caesarea (this was the main city of the province), where, after many terrible tortures with scourging, fire and stretching of the body, St. The great martyr ended his earthly life by the sword (in 303). † Repose of the blessed. Procopy of Ustyug, Fool for Christ's Sake It is not known whether anyone in Russia followed the path of foolishness before Blessed Procopius; but among the Orthodox saints of the Russian Church, Procopius is the first imitator of Blessed. Simeon and John, who ascended to heaven through foolishness 110. Procopius, a foreign merchant who traded in Novgorod, captivated by the statutes and teachings of the Orthodox Church, renounced papism and accepted Orthodoxy. The life of Orthodox monks had such an effect on him that he, having distributed his property to the poor and partly to the Khutyn monastery, entered on a new path of life, the path of foolishness 111. Avoiding fame, he did not stay long in Novgorod and retired to Vel. Ustyug. He found a Poluzyryan city with Christian churches; The cathedral church was wooden and very high. On her porch, Procopius began to spend his nights in prayer; and during the day he walked around the city like a fool. They mocked him, scolded him, beat him; This was done by both children and those whose spiritual sense was even less developed than children, in order to understand the actions of a spiritual person. Blazh. Procopius prayed for them with the prayer of the Crucified: “Lord! do not put this sin on them.” He lay down to rest, sometimes on dung, sometimes on a stone, or on bare ground. His clothes were torn and he endured the northern frosts in them. He was a martyr who doomed himself to troubles and hardships of all kinds. The righteous couple John and Mary served as consolation for the righteous Procopius. John Buga or Bagu was a Mongol official in Ustyug; allowing himself self-will, like other Baskaks like him, he (1262) took by force the daughter of a citizen, Maria, as his concubine. The people became agitated and were ready to kill the daring Baskak. At the suggestion of others, Bagu was baptized and married Mary. The people reconciled with him, and Baghu John completely changed his life - he and Mary led a righteous and pure life; on Falcon Mountain, where, according to the Mongolian habit, Bagu amused himself with falconry, a church of the Forerunner was built with a monastery 112. John and Mary left behind the memory of the righteous in Ustyug and were buried near the Church of the Ascension 113. Righteous Procopius visited them from time to time, but did not enjoy the comforts of their earthly life. His friend and interlocutor was especially blessed. Cyprian, founder of the Arkhangelsk Ustyug monastery: but he did not seek rest for his flesh from him either. Once there was a severe cold at night. A strong blizzard covered houses with snow, and the frost and north wind were so harsh that birds fell dead to the ground, even livestock and people froze. One can imagine what it was like for the naked Procopius, who usually spent his nights on the porch of the Ustyug Cathedral. Tormented by the frost, he tried to enter the huts of the beggars that were near the church in order to warm up a little; but some locked the door, others even drove Procopius away with a stick. The driven away sufferer found a barn where dogs lay in the corner; he lay down near the dogs to keep warm from them, but the dogs also left him. Isn’t it hard not to find protection from death among people and even among dogs? “Blessed be the name of the Lord,” said Procopius and returned to the porch; trembling with all his bones and expecting death, he prayed that God would accept his soul. And so, he feels some kind of warmth; looking, he sees in front of him an angel of God with a beautiful branch in his hand; the heavenly guest, touching Procopius’s face with a branch, revived the sufferer; a pleasant warmth spread throughout his entire body. It was exactly the same as what Bl. experienced. Andrey is in a similar position. About this bl. Procopius told his beloved cleric Simeon, father of St. Stefan of Perm, under the condition - not to talk about it to others until the death of the holy fool. The favorite place where Procopius often sat for a long time was a stone on the bank of the river. Sukhony. Here, looking at the ships sailing past, he silently prayed for those who had entrusted their fate to the unfaithful elements. He loved this place so much that in the last years of his life he used to say that he should be buried here 114. Procopius accepted food from God-fearing people, which he did not eat every day; but he took nothing from the rich who had profited by falsehood. – For his difficult deeds, the Lord gave Procopius the gift of insight and miracles while still on earth. Our God, the God of mercy and love, is the God of vengeance for our sins. Pestilence and famine, cowardice and flood flow from the vial of God's wrath against the wicked. Who can survive under the weight of the right hand of the Almighty? But the Lord is merciful even in His anger. He promised to spare guilty cities for ten righteous people and even for one great righteous one. – We see the fulfillment of this promise in the life of blessed Procopius, while people did not understand this righteous man. One Sunday, Procopius spoke to the people in the church: “Repent, brothers, of your sins; Appease God with fasting and prayers; otherwise the city will perish from a hail of fire.” “He is out of his mind,” said those listening to Procopius. After the liturgy, Procopius, sitting on the porch, cried and sobbed, then cried day and night. Those passing by asked him: “What’s wrong with you, Procopius? What kind of sorrow do you have? The blessed one answered: “Watch and pray, so that you do not fall into misfortune.” But his sermons were not taken to heart. - On the third day, Procopius walked around the city and said with tears: “Weep, friends, weep for your sins, pray that the Lord will deliver you from the wrath of His righteousness, so that He will not destroy you, like Sodom and Gomorrah, for your iniquities.” But even now, those hardened in sins did not move and did not come to their senses; they laughed at the preacher as if he were a madman. And only Procopius remained as a prayer book. – A week after the first sermon, at noon, a black cloud appeared in the sky; approaching the city, it grew more and more; Finally the day turned into dark night. Lightning ran in fiery stripes and terrible peals of thunder rolled in the air, without interruption for a minute; The walls of the buildings shook from the thunderclaps and the deafening sounds made it impossible to hear a human voice. It was then that they saw that the city was in danger of destruction; Then they remembered the sermon of Procopius and believed that it was not madness that preached the wrath of God against wickedness. Then everyone rushed to the churches and especially to the cathedral church of Our Lady. Procopius was already here and in front of the icon of the Annunciation of the Mother of God he prayed with bitter tears, may the Mother of God be a warm intercessor for criminal people. And all the people prayed with sobs for salvation from the wrath of God: husbands and wives, children and decrepit elders cried out: “Mistress! save us." They prayed for a long time, and then a stream of Myrrh flowed from the icon of the Mother of God and a fragrance spread throughout the church. At the same time there was a change in the air, the suffocating heat was no longer there; clouds with thunder and lightning rolled into the distance - into deserted places. They soon learned that 20 miles from Ustyug, hot stones fell with hail, crushed and destroyed many trees, but none of the people were killed and even livestock remained intact everywhere. Meanwhile, peace from St. There were so many icons that they filled church vessels with them, and those who were anointed with the Myrrh received healing from various diseases 115. After that, Procopius began to act like a fool again and with his foolishness he hid from people the abundant grace that dwelt in him. “He carried three pokers in his hand. Through several experiments it was noticed that when he carried them upside down, that year there was a good harvest for bread and other fruits; when they were turned upside down, people had to humble themselves, there was a shortage of everything. Blessed Procopius reposed in old age, on July 8, 1285, at the gates of the monastery of Archangel Michael. In accordance with his wishes, his body was buried on the bank of the river. Sukhona, near the Assumption Cathedral Church. The stone on which he often sat on the bank of the Sukhona, praying for those floating, was placed over his tomb, and a chapel was erected in the place where he reposed. In 1495, a church was built in Ustyug in the name of the righteous Procopius. It was a monument of gratitude for saving the Ustyug squad in Nizhny from a general disease; The righteous man then appeared to many of the squad with the promise of his help against a terrible disease. Even before that, the face of the righteous man was written on the stone on which he loved to sit. Now they have decided to celebrate his memory in Ustyug every year on July 8th. From that time on, healings began to appear more often through the prayer of a righteous person called for help. Ustyug citizen Grigory was in a violent fever; relaxed by her, he asked to be taken to the tomb of Procopius, and here, when the funeral service was held, he stood up healthy. - The okolnichy of the Grand Duke Vladimir was very sick, his whole body was covered with ulcers and no medicine helped him. – One of the Ustyug citizens, coming to the boyar on business and learning about his illness, told him: “Don’t be angry with us, honest boyar, we want to name you a faithful doctor; for many years the holy fool Procopius lived with us in Ustyug; The cathedral now has a church in his name and various healings are obtained from his relics.” The boyar sent a messenger to Ustyug to serve a prayer service to the blessed one. I will make a copy of the patient for him; when the messenger returned with the icon of St. Procopius, the sick man got out of bed and, after listening to the prayer service in front of the icon, became completely healthy. – Among the miracles, the following is worthy of special attention: the governor of Ustyug, boyar Semyon Borisovich, had a servant whom he loved, but who did a lot of dirty tricks to the Ustyug people; the poor Christian died unchristianly, without receiving confession and communion of the Holy Mysteries. – The boyar ordered to bury his beloved minister near the cathedral and build a tent over his grave; his will was fulfilled, but that same night the tent was swept away. The boyar ordered a new one to be built, but that too was scattered. The boyar became angry, thinking that bad people were doing this out of displeasure with him. - One Ustyuzhanin took it upon himself to say to the boyar: “Don’t be angry, boyar; I heard from my great-grandfathers that here lies blessed Procopius, a fool for Christ.” - The boyar understood the truth; he ordered the body of the servant to be transferred to another place and prayed with tears: “Forgive me, blessed Procopius, a sinner and fool who dared to place an unclean servant near your holiness” 117. The devout Ustyuzhanin of the 16th century in his praise of Blessed. Procopius wrote: “Constantinople pleases the holy blessed men Simeon, John and Andrew, Christ for the sake of the holy fools. Veliky Novgorod glorifies Archbishops John, Euthymius, Nikita, Jonah and the Venerables Varlaam, Savva and Michael of Klopsky; Pskov city - blessed prince Vsevolod-Gabriel, Rev. Avramia and Savva. Moscow honors Metropolitans Peter, Alexy, Jonah and Philip, blessed Maxim and Vasily and other saints. - Rostov pleases bishops Leonty and Ignatius, Isaiah and Jacob, Venerable. Abraham and Blessed Isidora. Smolensk and Yaroslavl honor Prince Theodore and his children; Vologda Rev. Demetrius, Cornelius of Komel, Paul and Sergius on Nurma, Dionysius and Amphilochius Glushitsky. – The Vaga River, on which the city of Shenkursk, pleases St. George the Holy Fool; Solovetsky Island and Pomorye - Rev. Zosima and Savvatiya. We, Procopius, have you as the guardian of Christ and the protector of the city of Ustyug” 118. The Church sings: “You were homeless, Procopius, and, enduring every insult, you offered good deeds to God, like fragrant incense, like a pleasant sacrifice. That is why you received boldness before Him in heaven. Pray to grant cleansing of sins to those who glorify the holy memory of you” 119. † Repose of Rev. Theophilus the myrrh-streaming Parents of Rev. Theophilus 120 – Macedonian Slavs from the town of Sicheva 121, good and pious Christians, gave their son an excellent upbringing. The son, having studied successfully from a young age, did not like fun and distraction and loved to talk with smart and kind people. He devoted most of his time to reading Christian books and loved to enrich his mind with knowledge. Having become famous both for his good life and for his Christian knowledge, he was ordained a priest; in this rank he zealously sowed the seeds of piety in Christian hearts and for this sowing he moved from one place to another. Zeal for spiritual perfection brought him closer to the Randan bishop Akakios, and Theophilus remained to live with him for spiritual edification. The Patriarch of Constantinople Niphon receives letters from Egypt with news of the miracles performed by the Alexandrian Patriarch Joachim, to the shame of the Jews, and on the instructions of the Patriarch, Bishop Akakios, with Theophilus and others, goes to Egypt for personal communication with the Patriarch. With the messengers, a message was sent from the Patriarch of Constantinople to the Patriarch of Alexandria, expressing joy about the mercies of heaven. Truly wonderful things happened, glorious for Christianity. Plague was raging in Egypt: Misir and its environs were particularly hard hit. A Jew doctor, an avowed enemy of Christianity, spread a rumor among Mohammedans that Christians are the culprits of mortality - they lower the cross into the water. Word reached the Sultan. He, respecting the patriarch, ignored the report of malice for the first time. The Jew doctor turned to the Jew vizier, the Sultan’s favorite, and he managed to bring the Sultan to the point that the Patriarch was demanded to the Divan for an explanation. The Sultan talked with the patriarch for a long time and finally said: “let the patriarch, to justify the words of the Gospel, move the mountain next to Misir.” The Patriarch asked for several days for prayer. Then, on the appointed day, at a gathering of people, he said to the mountain: “In the name of the Lord I say: come down from your place.” And the mountain shook and moved. This mountain has since been called dur dogo - become a mountain. “This miracle amazed everyone. But the Jews became even more angry. It is written among them, they told the Sultan: even if they drink something mortal, it does not harm them (Mark 16:18). If this is not a lie, let the patriarch prove it on himself. The Sultan accepted this suggestion of anger and agreed that poison should be served to the patriarch. Full of faith in the power of the cross of Christ, the patriarch overshadowed the death cup with the sign of the cross and drank poison. Everyone expected him to die immediately. The Patriarch remained unharmed. Having poured a glass with water, the Patriarch said to the Sultan: “Let the Jew drink this, served by the faith that is blasphemous to them.” By order of the Sultan, the Jew drank and died instantly. Amazed by such miracles, the Sultan ordered the slanderer of the vizier to be beheaded, and a fine was imposed on all Jews: to build water pipes from the Nile to Misir 122. Akaki and Theophilus were received by the Patriarch of Alexandria with joy, and Blessed. Theophilus, with his education, attracted the special attention of the great saint. After spending quite some time in Alexandria, the pious travelers went to Sinai, and from there to Jerusalem, were at Tabor and Damascus, where they received letters from the Patriarch of Antioch to Constantinople. From Damascus they returned to Jerusalem, where Blessed. Akaki fell ill and died. Theophilus already delivered the letters of the Patriarch of Jerusalem to the patriarch. Pachomius, since Niphon retired. Patr. Pachomius loved Theophilus so much that he kept him with him in the position of notary and exarch of the great church. Theophilus was respected by everyone for his virtues, but he became burdened with this respect and retired to Athos. In the Vatopedi monastery he entrusted himself to the leadership of the retired bishop; Submitting himself to his will, he performed service every day. After the death of the bishop, he moved to the Iveron monastery and here he learned obedience from one, love from another, and patience from a third. On behalf of the monastery, he was engaged in copying books - and many of his books of writing remained in Iver 123. Theophilus became so famous for his spiritual life and education that the Thessalonians strongly desired to have him as their archpastor. Patriarch Theoliptus himself, who was on occasion in Thessaloniki, at the request of the Soluntsev, wrote to Theophilus, summoning him to Thessaloniki. But the humble Theophilus hastened to put on the schema, and answered the patriarch that the serious illness that forced him to take the schema did not allow him to arrive in Thessaloniki. Hegumen Dionysius then labored in solitude near Iver. Blazh. Theophilus, having asked his permission, built a small cell nearby. They lived in such love between each other that it seemed they had one soul. Then the blessed one lived in Kareya with Elder Kirill. Here, the elder of the Holy Mountain, Elder Seraphim, confessor of Cyril, fell in love with Theophilus so much that they remained friends to the grave. When a strong desire for silence carried Theophilus into the secluded cell of St. Basil, which belonged to the monastery of Pandocrator 124, and meanwhile Theophilus had nothing with which to repair the dilapidated cell and pay the monastery, Elder Seraphim helped him and then, abandoning the position of prot, went to live with the blessed one. Theophilus. Their exceptional feat was to preserve their minds with the unceasing Jesus Prayer. Lecturer Theophilus thought of nothing more than the Lord Jesus; Jesus was his breath, He was constantly in his heart. Finally, being full of days, the monk foreknew his death and began to prepare for the transition to that life. He wrote a confession of faith and a will. On Friday, at his request, the consecration of oil was performed on him; having said goodbye to everyone, he partook of the Holy Mysteries; He gave the commandment to his disciple Isaac not to bury him, but to drag his corpse somewhere and throw it. The monk gave up his spirit to God on July 8, 1548. Isaac fulfilled the will of the elder and dragged his body into the forest. When rumors about the death of Theophilus spread throughout the mountain, many, acquaintances and friends, came to venerate the grave of the saint. Isaac pointed out to everyone one place that had been dug up, as if it were the grave of a deceased person. Only the monks of Iver and Pandocrator, for some reason, did not trust Isaac. Some of them began to walk through the forest and, having found the relics of the monk, hid them. When Isaac came to the ravine on the 40th day, to his amazement he did not find the relics of the old man. After a long reconnaissance, he discovered that the relics were in the monastery of Pandocrator. He filed a complaint with Bishop Macarius of Yeris. He convened the abbots, and they decided to leave the hand of the monk in the monastery of Pandocrator, and give the rest to Isaac in the cell church of St. Basil. Since that time, the relics of the saint exude fragrant myrrh. St. Righteous Procopius of Usyansky An ancient record about the appearance of the relics of the saint and his miracles says: “This blessed and ever-memorable Procopius’s fatherland is long and his tribe is earthly, city or whole, in which the saint was born, the mania of God was greatly hidden from us, but we know better, as the saints of God seek not an earthly, but a heavenly fatherland, not with human, but with angelic kinship they boast, and strive not to be citizens of Jerusalem below, but of Jerusalem above.” The relics of the saint appeared on the banks of the Usya River, near the parish church of the village of Veryugi (Velsky district, Vologda province), around 1600, in a coffin made of willow vines, which was very dilapidated. The relics were intact, as if they had been buried the same day. No one knew or remembered what had appeared, but the incorruption of the relics and the miraculous healings of many sick people immediately convinced everyone of the holiness of what had appeared. The surrounding residents, having given praise and thanks to God for the mercy shown to them, built a chapel over the relics. Soon after that, the saint appeared to the farmer Saveliy Ontropov and ordered him to make a new coffin for himself. To Savely’s question “Who are you?” he called himself Procopius and explained that he was the one whose body had recently appeared at the church. Saveliy made a coffin, and when he was about to take it to the church, the saint appeared to him again and ordered the coffin to be slightly lowered on top. Savely, having fulfilled what was commanded, announced to the people about the appearances of the saint that had happened to him, through which everyone learned his name and with great reverence they transferred the holy relics into a new coffin, and the people carried the old one along the rods for a blessing and memory. The relics rested in the chapel until they were transferred to the newly built, instead of the dilapidated, Vvedenskaya Church and placed openly near the southern wall. In 1652, through the diligence of a certain merchant from Solvychegodsk, the image of the saint was painted. From that same time, it must be assumed, they began to perform church services for him according to a special written book. When the Veryuzhskaya church from Novgorod went to the Kholmogory diocese, the relics, by order of the first Kholmogory bishop, were testified in 1696, and then again in 1739. From that time on, the diocesan authorities allowed the construction of churches in honor of St. Procopy of Usyansky. The relics now rest in an ancient wooden shrine in the stone Vvedenskaya Church; they are covered with an image of the saint sewn on satin, silver and gold (see Veryuzhsky Historical tales about the lives of saints who labored in the Vologda diocese. Vologda, 1880). Celebration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God In 1579, on June 28, under John Vasilyevich IV in Kazan, which he conquered, under Moscow Metropolitan Anthony, under Archbishop Jeremiah of Kazan, to strengthen the faith of Christ among the Mohammedans who inhabited the Kazan kingdom, the Mother of God appeared to the nine-year-old girl Matrona and ordered to announce to the spiritual and secular dignitaries of the city that They took her icon from the bowels of the earth, and pointed out the very place to the ashes of the burnt house of the girl’s parents, where the icon was hiding. The vision was repeated three times. At first the girl did not announce her vision to anyone, then she revealed it to her mother, who at first did not listen to her. After the third vision, Matrona told her mother with tears: “I saw in a dream an icon of the Mother of God, from whose face a terrible flame emanated, rushing towards me and ready to burn me, and I heard a voice: if you do not tell my words, I will appear in another place, and you will perish.” After this, the mother went with Matrona to the Kazan governors and Archbishop Jeremiah and forced her to tell them about the appearances of the Mother of God that had happened to her. When they did not believe the girl’s words, the mother herself decided to dig the ground in the place indicated by her daughter in order to find the icon, but in vain. They dug the ground and looked for icons and others, and also did not find them. Matrona herself began to dig the ground and soon found the holy icon of the Mother of God, as if newly drawn, and not found in the ground. The revealed image was taken out of the ground with reverence and joy and placed in the place where it was found. Countless crowds of people immediately flocked to him; everyone looked at the shrine with reverent surprise, prayed and tried to venerate it. The archbishop and mayors were notified of the wondrous discovery. The archbishop made a religious procession to the revealed icon and with great honor escorted it to the nearest church in the arms of Hermogenes, who was at that time the priest of this church, later the patriarch, and here he performed a prayer service in front of the icon. Having taken the list from her and outlining the circumstances of her appearance and miracles, they sent her to Moscow to the Tsar in 1579. In 1595 The noble sovereign Theodore Ioannovich ordered the construction of a stone and convent of the Mother of God on the site of the appearance of the icon, where there had previously been a wooden church, and made a great sacrifice on his own behalf. In this monastery, the daughter and mother took monastic tonsure, serving as the icon's appearance. The appearance of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was established to be celebrated in Kazan on July 8 - the day when the mother and her daughter, who had been granted a vision, went to the archbishop and the city leaders to announce to them about the vision. The Sign of the Ustyug Icon of the Mother of God On this day, the Orthodox Church remembers the “sign” that appeared in Ustyug from the icon of the Annunciation of the Most Holy. Mother of God in 1290. St. Procopius, a holy fool for Christ's sake, who labored in Veliky Ustyug, once announced to his fellow citizens that God, for their sins, wanted to destroy their city. The day he foretold came: a gloomy cloud appeared in the sky above the city itself, and threatening clouds began to appear from all sides with incessant lightning and thunder. The city was threatened by disasters; the inhabitants turned to repentance and everyone flocked to the churches of God to pray for the aversion of the impending misfortune. In the cathedral church of the Mother of God, from this icon, through the prayers of the people who lamented their sins, and especially through the prayers of the Ustyug wonderworker Procopius, who, having fallen before the icon of the Mother of God, with tears prayed to the Lady, may She be an early intercessor before Her Son for the people who have sinned and attracted His righteous anger upon themselves, a sign of God’s favor was publicly revealed. On the icon of the Queen of Heaven they saw fragrant myrrh flowing from her eyes - a sign of her tearful prayer for the salvation of the city, and the Lord, through the intercession of His Most Pure Mother, delivered the city from destruction. Terrible clouds, threatening, by the mercy of God, swept over the city and in an uninhabited place rain poured from them and stones fell out. In memory of this saving event, an annual celebration of the miraculous icon of the Most Holy One was established. Theotokos on the 8th day of July. The miraculous image of the Annunciation of the Mother of God, before which St. prayed. Procopius is called Ustyug and is now in the Moscow Assumption Cathedral, where this image was probably transferred during the reign of Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible, around 1567. In place of this image in Ustyug, on July 3, 1747, a newly painted image was erected. In 1812, the enemies who were in Moscow deprived the Ustyug icon of its rich salary, but the Ustyug residents, who still reverence the miraculous image, replaced it with a new one in 1817. Procopius: a) the note was written by Simeon, the father of Stephen of Perm, shortly after the death of Procopius. “The servant of God Simeon, seemed to have spoken powerfully from the saint and glorified God and hid his secret verbs and told no one about his great patience, even before he departed from this life. After the repose of the saint, everything was written in order, seeing and hearing from the saint for the benefit of the soul of our last generation,” b) The complete life was written after the construction of the church in Ustyug ca. 1500 with a not entirely skillful hand. The author (in chapter 30) says that he compiled his description from the “church narratives” in which it was written about St. for her husband, “some are in notebooks, and others are in sweatshirts, and not in a row, the front is behind, and the back is in front.” RKP. life is blessed. Procopius says that Procopius listened to instructions in Orthodoxy from St. Varlaam in his monastery; but St. Barlaam of Khutyn, who died in 1193, could not teach instructions in the faith to Procopius, who died almost a century later than St. Varlaam; probably the biography writer accepted one of the successors of St. Varlaam for the venerable Varlaam himself, by the identity of the names.
