By order of Atticus, the hundred-year-old Simeon was taken by the infidels and crucified on the cross (in 107 AD). † Repose of Saint Stephen, Bishop of Volyn From a young age, Blessed Stephen labored under the leadership of St. Theodosius of Pechersk and was his sincere disciple. At the monastery of Theodosius, he was the domestik, or the chief clergyman for the choir. Ave. Theodosius distinguished him so much with his attention that from time to time he instructed him to speak teachings to the brethren in his place. Before the death of Theodosius, the brethren asked to appoint Stephen a domesticist as hegumen: “he grew up under your hand, they said, he served you, give him to us.” And Theodosius, agreeing to the wishes of the brethren, said to Stefan: “Behold, child, I entrust you with the monastery; watch it with caution and keep what I have arranged regarding the service, do not change the monastery traditions” 359. Blazh. Stefan zealously fulfilled the commandments of his mentor. He had to take care of the construction of the church, which was founded by St. Theodosius. Three years later, the huge church was roughly completed. Since this new church stood almost two hundred fathoms from the ancient monastery in the south-west direction, necessity required that the monastery also be moved there. Blazh. Stefan built wooden cells near the new church and transferred the brethren from the old monastery to them. In the latter, only a few are left for the burial of the dying and for the daily celebration of the liturgy for the departed brethren. The old and new monasteries were now separated by a courtyard, which was built by Theodosius for strangers. Stefan surrounded both the monasteries and the courtyard with a wooden wall. Blazh. Stefan did not have time to finally build a new church. The brethren, who themselves asked him to be abbot, unknown why and on what occasion, rebelled against him so much that he was forced to renounce the abbot and leave the monastery. This was in 1078 360. Blazh. Stefan complacently endured the grief of expulsion from the monastery, which was entrusted to him by his father and mentor Theodosius. Many of the nobles and rich people were his spiritual children and were very sorry for his sorrowful situation. Tied with heartfelt love to the Pechersk monastery, he did not want to go far from it. On another spur of the Pechersk Mountain he founded a new monastery in honor of St. Theotokos, in memory of the position of her robe in Blachernae, which was called Klovsky after the place, and Blachernae after the church 361. It was a monument to the beneficence of the Mother of God to her beloved Pechersk monastery. Stefan saw, writes blessed. Simon, how stone craftsmen came from Greece with an icon of the Mother of God, and told the vision of the Queen of Heaven in Blachernae, and therefore he himself created the Blachernae Church on Klova. The offerings of spiritual children gave Stephen the means to build and decorate this monastery. He gathered many brethren to the new monastery and introduced the rules of the Pechersk Monastery 362 into it. In 1091 we see him as bishop of Vladimir of Volyn; he was present during the transfer of the relics of St. Theodosius from the cave to the monastery.
