Editorial articles of St. Theophan the Recluse in the magazine “Home Conversation” for 1872–1873. Source aspect

Annotation. The article presents the results of a source analysis of the editorial articles of St. Theophan in the magazine “Home Conversation” for 1872–1873. Using source study methods, sources were identified, described and analyzed. 99 articles were identified, their full bibliographic description was given, as well as a description of the main sources on the basis of which the editorials were compiled. The editor of the magazine “Home Conversation”, V.I., compiled the leading articles. Askochensky. The sources were the sermons of Saint Theophan to the Vladimir (1869) and Tambov (1861) flocks, as well as excerpts from his book “Letters on Christian Life” (1860–1862). More than half of the articles are compiled on the basis of the “Collection of Sermons to the Vladimir Flock” - 55.5%, a quarter of the articles are compiled on the basis of the “Collection of Sermons to the Tambov Flock” - 25.0%. Sources for seven articles were not identified. The work carried out will contribute to further study of the textual aspects of the spiritual heritage of St. Theophan. Abstract. The editor of the magazine “Home Conversation” V. I. Askochensky became the compiler of the leading articles. The sources were the sermons of St. Theophan to the Vladimir (1869) and Tambov (1861) congregations, as well as excerpts from his book “Letters on Christian Life” (1860– 1862). More than half of the articles are based on the “Collection of sermons to the Vladimir flock” – 55.5%, a quarter of the articles are based on the “Collection of sermons to the Tambov flock” – 25.0%. Sources for seven articles have not been identified. The work carried out will contribute to the further study of the textual aspects of the spiritual heritage of St. Theophan. In the second half of the 19th century, during the era of the Great Reforms and Transformations in Russia, Saint Theophan collaborated with many church publications, considering them a platform from which the pastoral word should sound, enlightening, denouncing, calling for repentance and salvation. The saint noted that “writing is a necessary service of the Church,” and in one of his sermons he said that “what is printed is not true—we read and do not speak; an unkind custom is introduced, and we not only do not resist it, but willingly get carried away by it ourselves.” The saint collaborated with the magazine “Home Conversation” (in 1858–1865 the magazine was called “Home Conversation for Public Reading”) from 1858 to 1877. The editor-in-chief of the magazine was Viktor Ipatievich Askochensky (1813–1879), who had an Orthodox-patriotic position and managed to attract St. Ignatius (Brianchaninov), Archimandrite Leonid (Kavelin), S.O. Burachka, F.N. Glinka, A.N. Maykov, Count M.V. Tolstoy, F.I. Tyutcheva and others. We made a review and typology of the publications of St. Theophan in a separate article “Publications of St. Theophan in the magazine “Home Conversation”. Based on the results of the study, three types of publications were identified: 1) the works of Saint Theophan, which were later published as separate books: “Repentance and the Sinner’s Turn to God” (1868); “The Order of Godly Life” (1868); “Explanatory articles for the treatise “The Order of a Godly Life”” (1869); “Soul and body are not something corporeal, but pure spirit” (1869); “Lessons from the deeds and words of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ” (1870); "Letters on Spiritual Life" (1870–1871); “Thoughts for every day of the year according to church readings from the word of God” (1871); "Apothegmas" (1872); “Interpretation of the 118th Psalm” (1874–1877); 2) articles by the saint (1869–1870, 1872–1873, 1876–1877) of spiritual and moral content, devoted to issues of comparative theology, as well as polemical articles on the nature of angels and on the translation of the Holy Scriptures into Russian; 3) excerpts from various works, mainly from “Letters on Christian Life” (1859, 1861, 1872–1873), sermons to the Vladimir and Tambov flocks (1872–1873). This article sets the task of identifying the sources of the editorials of 1872–1873, when almost every issue of “Home Conversation” opens with small thematic articles from the writings of Bishop Feofan. A total of ninety-nine articles were published during this period (50 in 1872, 49 in 1873). Compiler of editorials 1872–1873. became the editor of the magazine V.I. Askochensky, which Saint Theophan mentioned in a letter to N.V. Elagin dated February 14, 1880, when he wrote about their separate publication in favor of the family of the deceased V.I. Askochensky. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the sources for the editorials in “Home Conversation” were sermons to the Vladimir and Tambov flocks, as well as excerpts from the book “Letters on Christian Life.” More than half of the articles are compiled on the basis of the “Collection of Sermons to the Vladimir Flock” - 55.5%, a quarter of the articles are compiled on the basis of the “Collection of Sermons to the Tambov Flock” - 25.0%. Fifty-five passages were taken from sermons to the Vladimir flock (sermons Nos. 1, 2, 3 (2), 4, 5, 6 (2), 7 (2), 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 21, 22 (2), 23, 26, 28, 29, 31, 32 (2), 33, 35, 36, 39 (2), 47, 49, 57, 58, 62, 70, 72, 73, 83, 84, 86, 87, 95, 97 (3), 98 (2), 101, 103, 117, 131, 132, 135. Twenty-five excerpts are from sermons to the Tambov flock (sermons Nos. 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11–15 (2), 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36 (2), 38, 40, 54, 57, 59). Twelve excerpts - from Letters on the Christian Life (volumes 1 and 2) Vol. 1: letters No. 2, 3–4, 10, 11, 13, 24, 27; Vol. 2, letters No. 8 (modern 44), 11 (modern 47), 24 (modern 60), 43 (modern 79), 48 (modern 84). The source for seven articles could not be attributed.
