St. ap. Matthias was from Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah. After the ascension of Jesus Christ, when all the apostles were in Jerusalem, awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit promised to them, Matthias, from among the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ, with Joseph Barsaba, who was nicknamed Justus, that is, the truthful, was presented to the apostle. Peter of the Church of Christ, in whose congregation there were about 120 people, to replenish the twelve-numbered number of apostles, diminished by the fall of Judas Iscariot. "Brethren! said Ap. Peter, it was necessary to fulfill what the Holy Spirit prophesied in Scripture through the mouth of David about Judas, who brought those who drank Jesus. He was numbered among us and received the lot of this ministry. But he acquired the land with an unrighteous bribe; and when he fell, his belly opened and all his entrails fell out. And this became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the land in their native language was called Akeldama, that is, the land of blood. In the book of Psalms it is written: let his court be empty, and let there be no one living in it, and let another take his dignity (LXVIII, 26. CVIII, 8). Therefore, it is necessary that one of those who were with us during the entire time that the Lord Jesus stayed and spoke with us, starting from the baptism of John until the day he ascended from us, should be a witness with us to His resurrection. Then they set two, Joseph, called Barsaba, and Matthias, prayed and said: You, Lord, the Knower of the Heart of all, show him that you have chosen from this one one, to accept the lot of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas has fallen, to go to his place. They cast lots; the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered among the 11 apostles (Acts 1:15–26). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, St. Matthias initially preached the Gospel in Jerusalem and Judea, along with the other apostles (Acts 6:2, 8:1,14). From Jerusalem with St. Peter and Andrew, during his first apostolic journey, he went to Antioch in Syria, was in Tiana, a city in Cappadocia, and in Sinope. Here St. ap. Matthias was imprisoned for the word of God, from which St. was miraculously released. ap. Andrew the First-Called. After this ap. Matthias also traveled to Amisia or Amasia, a city on the banks of the Pontus. During the third trip. Andrew Matthias was with him in Edessa and Sebastia. He also traveled preaching the Gospel, as Dorotheus and Nikephoros Callistus writes, to Ethiopia. Having served to spread and establish the Gospel in word and deed, St. Matthias converted many to Christ, and after many different sufferings for the name of Christ, he fearlessly and courageously accepted the crown of martyrdom in Jerusalem, having been stoned under the bishop Ananias, and, according to others, in Colchis. According to the legend of travelers, the relics of St. ap. Matthias are now in Rome. Put on the death of St. ap. Matthias in the 9th century, Theophan, Metropolitan of Nicaea, wrote a canon. The Church glorifies St. Matthias, as “the divine enlightener of the pagans.” St. torment. The troops dispersed the people, beat many, and these ten persons were captured as the main culprits, and were kept in prison for eight months, where they were scourged and branded with a hot iron; finally beheaded (730).
