January 1st. Liturgy and prayer service at the Chudov Monastery on the birthday of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. The sermon was delivered by the priest of St. Antipy of the Prechistensky Forty by Ivan Fedorov (MV. 1843. No. 3. P. 19). Letter from M. M. Tuchkova: “That E[frosinia] is trying to lure some sisters away from you - don’t mourn about that. Those who are disposed to live with you in peace and unanimity will not go. But those who go are not like that, and therefore their removal should not be considered a loss, but an act of God’s providence, making it easier for you and cleansing your society. If the well-disposed person is carried away by deception, she can repent and return with greater humility” (Letters to Abbess Maria. pp. 65–66. no. 49). Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “This letter will be delivered by Vera Alekseevna Muravyova, known to Prince Alexander Nikolaevich and in her sorrowful life who received Christian reinforcement and consolation from him. Talk to her about spiritual benefit and consolation and help her stay in the Lavra to gain her the blessing of St. Sergius” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 286. No. 358). January 2. Letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov regarding the lithographed translation of the Holy Scripture: “Since there are no witnesses on the main subject of the denunciation, there was no other way to discover the truth than careful questioning of relevant circumstances and multiplication of details that could be verified through other persons and some documents and which, by agreement and consistency in all parts, would show some sign of truth or by inconsistency they exposed the untruth of what was being shown. This meeting remained verbal; and those concerned with the matter are supposed to be called separately before the question itself, in order to eliminate any preparation and mutual agreement” (Reports and letters. 1891. P. 19). January 3. Resolution on the report of the acting dean about the fire in the church in the village of Podbereznikov: “Instruct the dean to convince the priest and parishioners to correct the damage in the church, and when this is done in a decent manner, then, after examination by the dean, after blessing the water and sprinkling it on the entire church and after reading the prayer laid down for the renovation, resume the priestly service.” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 99. No. 9787). January 4. Resolution on the petition of the sexton's widow for permission to find a groom in place of her deceased husband: “The petitioner had enough time to think about this when the place was provided, and now that a valid clerk has been legally assigned to it, there does not seem to be a legal basis for removing him from the place” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 99. No. 9788). Resolution on the dean’s report on the selection of four church elders: “Why don’t they want to notice for a long time that in the Rules of consistories there are no reports, just like in the Russian language, but there are reports?” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 99. No. 9789). Resolution on the petition of the parishioners, made with the trust of the landowner, to remove the sexton from the church: “It is incredible that the landowner would entrust the peasants to intercede for the matter in his place, whereas it is more natural for the landowner to intercede for the peasants” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 100. No. 9790). January 8. Resolution on the petition for the issuance of a metrical certificate of accession to the Orthodox Church on plain paper instead of stamp paper, due to poverty: “The consistory will satisfy the request in the proper manner, and if there is a law that does not allow giving a certificate on plain paper, then take the required stamp money from Chudov, from what belongs to me” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 100. No. 9791). January 9. Letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov: “After a careful review of the investigative acts compiled in this way, it turned out that in the defendant’s testimony, in comparison with the informer’s testimony, there were incompleteness, inconsistencies, and discrepancies with the testimony of others and with himself. Due to the lack of witnesses and documents to clarify the matter, there was no other way left than to confront the defendant with the observed incompleteness, inconsistency, and discrepancies and thereby again convince him to a more complete and direct discovery of the truth. In this sense, a question was given to the archimandrite... January 8, 1843, and the answer was taken from him. From a comparison of the detailed question point with the short answer of the archimandrite... it is clear that this answer does not clear up all the circumstances of the question point, and is almost only a denial of the further answer. But it was not in the power of those conducting the investigation to force him to say more; and there was no longer any means left for them to continue the investigation” (Reports and letters. 1891, pp. 21–22). January 11. Resolution regarding the rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, Archimandrite Eusebius (Orlinsky), with a request for archpastoral assistance in distributing the publication of the Holy Fathers: “The publication begins with the writings of St. Gregory the Theologian; Then, without a doubt, the writings of St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom will follow. These books were ordered to be in churches and monasteries by the Holy Synod. Therefore, it is necessary in part to suggest and advise, in part even to demand that monasteries and churches subscribe to this publication” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 168. No. 9935). January 12. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I agree to your journey, Father Viceroy, to Pesnosh and Odigitrievo. And visit me, because the path to the Lavra does not lie for me. The new vicar must be personally introduced to matters with which he is unfamiliar, and this has not yet begun, because he is sick” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 286. No. 359). January 13. Letter to A.N. Muravyov: “Do you give meaning to the exclamation you heard? Then you should not marvel at the mention in it of the Most Blessed Tver. He requires a special cover of the heavenly Forces more than the other. A strong opinion rose up against him, and I don’t know if it has weakened” (Letters. 1869. P. 117. No. 85). January 14. Resolution on the banned deacon’s petition for permission to serve in the priesthood: “The deacon’s mustache has been trimmed right down to the skin. For this absurd panache, refuse, at least until he leaves it” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 100. No. 9792). • Resolution on the report of the dean of Nikitsky forty with the provision of clergy records for 1842: “Deacon Lev Protopopov of St. George, in Vspolye, who did not preach sermons, due to his family life, is not approved by his family, that is, he is not sober and it is difficult for the family, to send to the Joseph Monastery for three weeks to test his behavior and confirm his sobriety.” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 100. No. 9793). Letter to A. N. Muravyov: “Mikhail Nikolaevich 180 visited me on the evening of the day on which I stopped hoping for this. So that this opportunity would not be lost, I hastened to read the manuscript about the Right Reverend Innocent and am returning it. She's entertaining. I can make two comments about it. First: do not attribute more credit to the Metropolitan of Moscow. Second: do not rush to scold V’s students.” (Letters. 1869. P. 120. No. 86). January 15. Resolution on the testimony given by the banned priest who gave communion to the village watchman Zernov: “The priest showed himself to have brought the Holy Gifts from the church to the house, incongruous with the circumstances when it was possible to take Zernov to church, since the Holy Gifts are allowed to be brought into houses only for the sick who cannot come to church” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 100. No. 9794). Resolution on the report of the inspector of the Bethany Seminary that the student Innokenty Veniaminov, who willfully left the seminary, returned to the seminary sick after 17 days: “Father rector will try to introduce Veniaminov to the understanding of the best path of life. He must take care that his life corresponds to the dignity of his parent 181 and is a comfort to him. Does he have and wants to get a secular rank? Isn’t it better to study and go there with knowledge and with rights according to the teaching, rather than now without everything? Or if, without waiting for the end of his studies, he wants to transfer to a secular rank: this cannot be achieved by flight, but let him decide where he wants, and ask for it in a legal manner. They won’t force him, is it possible to put him on a good path, in accordance with his desire” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 162. No. 9919). Resolution on the priest’s petition regarding the complaint against the dean: “Summon the Kiasovo deacon and sexton at the same time. Ask the deacon whether he noticed intoxication in the priest, in what cases and to what extent, whether the priest omitted the priestly service on important days, and on which days, and for how long. The sexton should not listen to this interrogation. As soon as the interrogation of the deacon is over, call the sexton, not allowing him to speak with the deacon at this time, and interrogate him about the same thing. If the indicators are inconsistent, you can confront them, but only then, when their interrogations have been signed by them” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 168. No. 9936). Letter to Archimandrite Philotheus (Uspensky) 182: “O. the rector will try to introduce Veniaminov to an understanding of the best way of life. He must take care that his life corresponds to the dignity of his parent and is a comfort to him. Do you have and want to get a secular rank? Isn’t it better to study and go there with knowledge and with the rules of teaching, rather than now without everything?” (Letters 1888. pp. 138–139). January 17. Death of Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Novgorod Seraphim (Glagolevsky). Appointment of Metropolitan Anthony (Rafalsky) as head of the St. Petersburg and Novgorod diocese. The first issue of the magazine “Moskvityanin” published the sermon 183 of Metropolitan Philaret with a foreword by editor M. M. Pogodin: “Russian magazines have always been decorated with the flowers of spiritual eloquence; Since ancient times, the famous names in Russia, Plato, Anastasia, Ambrose, Mikhail, Philaret, were often found in the Bulletin of Europe, Son of the Fatherland, etc., for general edification and delight. For some time now, unfortunately, this has become out of custom. We consider ourselves happy that we can decorate the beginning of our publication in 1843 with the work of the most famous Russian and European spiritual oration” (Barsukov. T. VII. P. 73). January 18. Letter to Archbishop Gabriel (Gorodkov): “I thought that with the cessation of my wanderings from Moscow I would have more free time here. But I still haven’t seen this. Business and people completely take away my daytime hours, but my weakness does not allow me to use much of the night time. Before this, the absence of a Vicar increased my studies” (CHOIDR. 1868. Book 2. P. 62). January 19. Resolution on the report of the acting dean about the prohibited deacon, who continues to behave drunkenly: “To stop the temptation to remove the prohibited deacon from this church and, until a decision about him, assign the case to a clergy position in the village, placing it under the special supervision of the dean and local priest” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 101. No. 9795). January 20. Resolution on the consistory decision on the refusal of benefits to a sexton, who, in the opinion of the consistory, should be sent to a monastery for two weeks for falsely calling himself dismissed: “Recognizing the opinion of the Consistory in its most important parts as fair, I believe, however, sexton, for the offense of false testimony about himself, made at a time when, according to the Highest mercy, forgiveness was granted to the guilty, in not to send a monastery, but to pay fifty bows to him in the Kolomna Assumption Cathedral, and to confirm to him that he should always refrain from unjust testimony, and especially before the face of His Imperial Majesty” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 102. No. 9796). Resolution on the consistory certificate on the archimandrite’s report on appointing a hieromonk to the position of monastic confessor: “As a hieromonk... of behavior that is not bad, then prescribe to the abbot that he can employ him in the position of confessor only out of need, and if he has the most worthy, in terms of edification and behavior, he must nominate him for this position” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 102. No. 9797). January 24. Report to the Holy Synod about the impossibility of occupying priestly positions in the city of Riga by students of the MDA due to their reluctance to marry: “Since marriage, which usually precedes entry into the white priesthood, cannot be otherwise than by good will, and also promotion to the priesthood according to the instructions of the Holy Synod, according to examples, and according to the very essence of the matter, is not without attention to the free disposition of those elected, then There is nothing left for me regarding the present matter except to most respectfully report everything written above to the Holy Synod” (CHOIDR. 1874. Book 3. pp. 94–95). Resolution on the decree of the Holy Synod on the protection of antiquities in churches and monasteries: “The consistories, as a precaution, instruct the dean of monasteries and the dean of city churches, so that if there is any place where restoration would be acceptable in churches, in a timely manner and in advance they pay attention to ensure that any significant antiquity is not altered or destroyed, and in the event of an attempt to do so, and also in cases of doubt, immediately reported" (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 169. No. 9937). January 25. Letter to mother: “So that you are not disturbed by the rumor about the death of His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim, I hasten to inform you that Archbishop Anthony of Warsaw has been appointed in his place 184 . May God bless his service for the benefit of the Churches: and I am consoled by the affirmed hope that I will no longer wander far from the places in which I am accustomed to find peace and have the consolation of your maternal blessing” (Letters. 1882. P. 364. No. 422). Letter to Archimandrite Filofey (Uspensky): “I would like to know from you, Father Rector, how Veniaminov behaves now. He asks Prince Sergius Mikhailovich for money, expressing the need for clothes. Tell me, does he really need it, and for what, and is he asking for money for another purpose?” (Letters. 1888. P. 141). January 27. Resolution on the priest’s request for mediation from the authorities in the matter of disassociation of church land: “The demand for land is a legal matter and an obligation. But so that the priest, entering into this matter at his request, does not lose peace with the parishioners, the Consistory should therefore enter into proper communication with whomever it should, on its own, and make it the duty of the priest to monitor the progress of the matter and, in case of slowness, to use intercession and care and report to your superiors” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 102. No. 9798). February 2. Letter to the mother: “Your concern for the Theological Priest is guided by love for mankind; and if you take care of a person who does not deserve much, you are doing good. This is not my situation. If I fulfill his desire, I will sin against justice” (Letters. 1882. P. 364. No. 423). February 3. Resolution on the petition of the sexton of the Edinoverie Trinity Church, appointed to the clergy position at the church in Warsaw, for permission to one son to take his place, and to accept the other for government support in the theological school: “Mikhailov is appointed to the Edinoverie Church, established within the Kingdom of Poland... On the acceptance of Mikhail Pospelov for government support to the seminary board, with acceptance in respect the fact that his father was appointed to distant service by the will of the higher authorities” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 103. No. 9799). Resolution on the priest’s report about the dean’s unseemly behavior: “The consistory about the intemperance, disorder and abuses of the Lopasninsky dean is to be examined and, having made a determination, presented. Remove the dean from office. Nikozhelsky priest Ioann Sokolov will serve as dean. Pay attention to the fact that the spiritual Board showed Lopasninsky’s dean’s behavior to be good and quite thorough in his position” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 103. No. 9800). February 4. Resolution on an extract from the consistory report register presenting the request of the sexton’s mother-in-law to grant her and her husband, a regular sexton of the same church, an allowance, since the son-in-law refuses to support them: “That the request is cunning, this sign is visible in the fact that the wife, and not the husband, is asking the elderly sexton to give his acquisitions to the general needs of the family, under the fear of otherwise losing the right to benefits from son-in-law" (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 104. No. 9801). February 6. Resolution on the priest’s request to resume his priestly service, prohibited for burying a peasant: “In respect of the needs of the parish, especially when the Holy Pentecost is approaching, the priest is allowed to serve as priest” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 104. No. 9802). February 7. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I don’t think about distributing the icon of the Mother of God of Paris, since I don’t think that this image was among those known to us in ancient times. It seems to be taken from a famous medal, about which there are remarkable legends, but which, as far as I know, the government did not allow to be brought into Russia. Someone in a dream said about this image that it seems that it would be suitable in reality: the Mother of God is everywhere one Mother of God, but what has been given to us should be used preferentially over what is not for us” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 287. No. 360). Letter to Archbishop Gabriel (Rozanov): “I enjoyed the grapes of your garden, not only with sensual pleasure, but also with reason, on the advice of a doctor, and with heartfelt, with the memory of you. But enough. I don’t want vines with my name on them, not wanting to name my name on the lands. Better promote this name through your prayer, so that it may be written in the book of the living, grafted into the true Vine” (Letters. 1888. P. 87). Letter to Archimandrite Philofey (Uspensky): “Peace to you, Father Rector, and to your employees. In keeping Veniaminov among the clerks, in the position you described, I see a beneficial order for him. With the supervision of others closer to him here, rather than in cohabitation with many disciples, one can more hope for benefit for him; and there seems to be nothing to fear for the cause” (Letters. 1888. P. 141). February 10. Resolution on the deacon’s petition to stop the fine in the form of prostrations, for which he suffers ridicule from the brethren: “Bows are not a vice; and excessive impatience is indecent for someone living in a monastery. So that the brethren do not reproach the deacon, the rector should see to it” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 104. No. 9803). Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The illness does not want to get rid of me and, apparently, the feast of St. Alexis will force us to celebrate in the cell, and not in the church” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 288. No. 361). February 11. Resolution on the testimony of the banned deacon with an explanation of his behavior: “The report that the dean forbade going to church does not deserve trust, firstly because the deacon did not complain about this at one time, and secondly because from the continuation of the interrogation it is clear that the deacon went to church unhindered at other times” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 104. No. 9804). The resolution on the testimony of the sexton that he really leads a drunken lifestyle, of which he repents: “Since the clerk, by his own admission, drunk beyond measure, can no longer tolerate being in Moscow, and, moreover, without a place, and constantly gives fear of indecency and complaints about his title, then the Consistory must strictly take measures to determine and send him to a rural clerkship or to watchman’s place under the spiritual Boards, with special supervision, or enter into a discussion as to whether he should be excluded from the spiritual rank” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 105. No. 9805). Resolution on the petition of parishioners for permission to serve as priest to a local priest as an innocent person due to denunciation: “This petition cannot be put into effect, firstly, because it is not indicated who composed and rewrote it; secondly, because it contains an excuse given to the defendant outside the court and outside any legal order; thirdly, because the signatures were not certified by either the dean or the peasant authorities, and therefore there is no certificate that it was definitely from the parish people, and this is all the more doubtful since it was not the parishioners who submitted it, but the accused priest, and the handwriting in which it was written most likely shows the hand of the priest” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 105. No. 9806). February 12. Resolution on the petition of a student expelled from the seminary for permission to return to study: “I wanted to get married, but as this did not work out, I decided to express the greatest desire to study. Now is not the time to be allowed to study, in the midst of study time” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 162. No. 9920). February 13. Resolution at the consistory resolution on sending a banned priest for drunken behavior and interrupted proskomedia to the monastery with his relegation to the position of clergy: “The dean should notice the incorrectness of his orders, so that the begun proskomedia, but incomplete Lamb, can be turned into an antidor; for the antidoron is distributed to the people; In no case should the lamb be distributed to the people, but it should have been used by the clergyman at the next liturgy. The dean must find out whether this Lamb was really used for distribution to the people, and whether this happened, he must clear his conscience before his spiritual father” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 106. No. 9807). February 14. Opinion on the manuscript “The Tale of the Miracle-Working Iveron Icon of the Mother of God”; “Can the lot about preaching to the pagans be attributed to the time preceding the descent of the Holy Spirit, when even after the descent of the Holy Spirit the mystery of the reception of the pagans into the church was not revealed and comprehended for a long time?? Behold the history of Cornelius’s conversion” (Opinions. Vol. III. P. 93). • Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Your letter seems to be a little angry. It's not necessary. In the age of denunciations and snitches, one must pay attention to denunciations as a precaution. For this reason, I only drew your attention to the two above-mentioned articles. It was necessary to speak about them simply and not to collect weapons to repel a weak attack. Thank you for reporting the rumor that dissatisfied people are gathering around me and it is better to eliminate false suspicions, if possible. I hope no one heard words of displeasure from me, because my thoughts, by the goodness of God, are not like that. But they will also say things that are not true, and they will believe the fairy tale based on the people introduced into the fairy tale. I was concerned before, and now even more, that A.I. Turgenev came to me, whom I began to accept in respect of his commitment to K.A.N. 185 And the goodwill of Prince Alexander Nikolaevich towards him, and he introduced me to two people he knew, inquisitive people. I had them once, or one twice. They have a wisdom that is not political, but scientific; who knows if there is something in them that I don’t notice and don’t know? “It’s good that my illness helps me spend time as a recluse almost before Lent; then, I hope, fasting will help” (Letters to St. Anthony. pp. 288–289. No. 362). February 15. Resolution on the deacon’s testimony that in 1842 he did not go to confession during Peter’s Fast due to illness: “If the deacon had simply admitted to failure to fulfill his duty, one could have forgiven. But how he contrives the absurd excuse that he did not confess due to illness, when illness really should have been an incentive and not an obstacle; and that she did not interfere, obviously, from the fact that, according to him, he served on holidays, and was only seven miles from his spiritual father, therefore, for failure to fulfill his duty, and especially for an indirect excuse, to send a deacon to the Berlyuk Hermitage for the Week to exhort him to reverence and straightforwardness” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 107. No. 9808). February 17. Letter to Archbishop Gabriel (Gorodkov): “The death of Bishop Seraphim, of blessed memory, my ordainer, and in many cases a benefactor, although not unexpected due to his antiquity, plunged me for a time into a deep feeling of orphanhood. My first consolation then was that not long after I received a blessing from him in a letter. Having performed the liturgy and memorial service for the deceased, I invited the Clergy of the Diocese entrusted to me to a fourty-day church commemoration of him. They ask me to be a representative to Your Eminence for the student of Theology Arseniy Chistoserdov, who is looking for a priestly place in Dednovo. Do mercy, if there is truth, she will agree” (CHOIDR. 1868. Book 2. pp. 64–65). February 18. Resolution on the journal of the Moscow Guardianship for the Poor of the Clergy on the petition of the daughter of a deceased archpriest to give her an allowance: “The parent of the girl Olga Alekseeva in 1812, while remaining in Moscow, underwent a difficult service and contributed, in all likelihood, to the preservation of the Novodevichy Convent and after this difficult feat he soon died. Therefore, to produce his daughters not six, but ten silver rubles D one third” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 167. No. 9931). February 19. Letter to Prince S. M. Golitsyn: “Platon Grigoriev, whose papers are being returned, is not a novice of the Lavra. He came there without legs and received healing from St. Sergius. Therefore, he was left in the Lavra as a guest, for the sake of goodwill, revealed to him by St. Sergius, and learned to read and write. But in time, it seems, he was not quite faithful to the good deed and began to fall ill again. The established council acted imprudently by giving him a ticket as if he belonged to the department of the Lavra, in which he lived only privately, as a phantom, and not as a novice. However, if you do the possible kindness to a sick person, do good” (Letters. 1884. P. 40. No. 41). February 20. Resolution on the sexton’s petition for an allowance for the maintenance of three orphans left behind by his deceased son-in-law: “The spiritual authorities, without a doubt, were not concerned with marrying off the widow, but with providing charity to the orphans. And did he really take a widow and children in order to abandon the children without help? And the worldly do not do this. Therefore, grandfather and stepfather must raise children. But from now on, in such cases, it should be observed so that it is clearly indicated what kind of help is promised by those who join an orphaned family” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 107. No. 9809). Resolution on the opinion of Bishop Joseph (Bogoslovsky) in the case of a fight between watchmen and a drunken priest of the Edinoverie Church: “The case of beatings inflicted on the watchman cannot be destroyed without investigation because the behavior of the priest is approved by unbeaten parishioners” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 108. No. 9810). Resolution on the report of the consistory with the presentation of a statement for the diocese for 1842 on the participation of parishioners in the Sacraments: “Although the number of those who did not attend confession and Holy Communion in 1842 was 5071 less than in the previous year, but as the statement shows, there is still a significant number of those who did not attend confession and Holy Communion due to omission; and how this number is especially large in Moscow and the districts: Moscow, Bronnitsky and Kolomensky; and in Zvenigorod and Kolomna districts there are seven such people of spiritual rank. then, in order to take possible measures to encourage the clergy by exhortation to bring the incorrigible to the fulfillment of their Christian duty, the consistory is instructed to do the following: 1) Present for Moscow and the districts: Moscow, Bronnitsky and Kolomna a special statement, in which the parishes show the largest number of those who have not attended confession and Holy Communion by omission 2) About the same clergy persons rank, submit a personal statement" (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 109. No. 9811). February 21. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The path to you still does not lie for me. The project for the restoration of the Annunciation Church in Chudov has been in preparation since the fall and is not yet ready to be sent to St. Petersburg” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 290. No. 363). February 22. Letter to Prince S. M. Golitsyn: “I congratulate Your Excellency on your holy fast. May it be good to your soul, and not burdensome to the outer man” (Letters. 1884. P. 40. No. 42). February 23. Resolution on the report of the cathedral established at the Lavra on acceptance of Russian citizenship for admission to the Lavra brotherhood: “Due to the certificate issued by law, explain to the applicant that a foreign passport must be presented to the civil authorities (in Moscow to the Governor-General) in order to receive a ticket for accommodation. Without this, it would not be in order to start a case about him in the Lavra” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. pp. 160–161. No. 9916). February 25. Resolution on the priest’s petition for acquittal in the case of refusing to bury a suddenly deceased peasant: “As the attached order of the Klin Spiritual Board omitted an important circumstance for the case, a medical examination of the body, which the priest was called into question, and as in this order, among other things, the priest was ordered to bury the body without burial, which action would be required does not apply to the priest, then confirm the ecclesiastical The board, and especially the archpriest who signed the order, to act more carefully” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 110. No. 9812). Resolution on the dean’s report on the transfer of the prohibited priest to the parish: “Is it possible to quickly find the banned priest, take away the church keys from him, and transfer him according to his belongings; and if this cannot be done soon, then order in front of witnesses to open the chest in which the keys are locked, and give the keys and registry books to whomever should; and seal the chest with the seals of those present at the opening, to the owner” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 110. No. 9813). Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “There is no doubt that the degrees of the spirits of darkness are different. It is noticeable that among them there are lower clans, similar to those among people who are unintelligible and wild, or like the cattle of the spiritual world. When they come into contact with this world, they do childish and stupid things; but it can hardly be said that they will not do any harm. It is already harmful that they disturb the inhabitant of an alien region. But what is more dangerous is that they can be the tools of the most cunning and the most evil. Therefore, the tempted one should not be told that they cannot do harm at all, but that God will not allow and the Guardian Angel will not allow harm to the believer who calls on the name of God and protects himself with the cross. To the advice not to heed the actions of the evil ones, but to strengthen the mind in the presence of God and in prayer, should we not add advice to carefully test oneself, whether a person is voluntarily holding back any passionate thought or what is dark in the conscience that opens the way and access to the inhabitants of darkness, and carefully preserve and restore peace of conscience? Is it still necessary to advise that a person generally maintain calm firmness in his actions and beware of any excitement and irritation? For excitement and irritation of the nerve enhances the ability to receive impressions of the dark invisible. That the souls of the dead under a curse and some others sometimes attack the living and produce a kind of demon, the example you encountered is not the only one. I know of three with signs of authenticity. One woman was troubled by such a spirit and named her mother, from whom he apparently took his life, and the village where she lived. The priest, to whom this was revealed, helped the suffering woman with peace of conscience and the sacraments, and then visited the mother, and what was said was confirmed” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 291. No. 364). February 26. Letter from E. V. Novosiltseva: “May the Lord help you to enter the inner cell of prayer so that the external remains behind the doors, without invading or entraining you” (Letters. 1911 P. 218). February 28. Letter to A.N. Muravyov: “Palmer, they say, is again in St. Petersburg. It’s curious what else he’s trying to achieve and with what success. Thank you for the reminder and encouragement to write to the Reverend Kamchatsky. You will receive a letter to him and please forward it. And I decided to send the money for the Kenai mission through the Synodal Chief Prosecutor, so that this need would be taken into account” (Letters. 1869. P. 121. No. 87). • Letter from mother: “I hear that my daughter-in-law’s health is unsatisfactory. Advise her with the peace of her soul to protect her peace and physical strength and take advantage of good medical advice with the opening of spring. which, enhancing life in all nature, is in many cases a particularly favorable time for treatment” (Letters. 1882. P. 365. No. 424). March 2. Resolution on the report of the abbess and treasurers of the Moscow Nikitsky Monastery on the provision of part of the income in favor of the monastics and novices: “It is allowed to use half of the income from the mill and half of the income from the garden land for the division, and keep the rest for the benefit of the monastery” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 111. No. 9814). Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I rejoice, Father Vicar, with you and the brethren in your union with the Lord in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. And He vouchsafed us to partake of His Table, numbering one hundred or more, in my home church” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 291. No. 365). March 4th. Letter to A. N. Muravyov: “I am consoled by the entrance of His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, who gives good hopes to the Church. At home, for the sake of my God, I seek good things for you. I was asked here if he would write to me? I answered, according to the ancient rules of church communication, I would have written to him, but I will probably write to him first. And indeed I wrote to him upon receiving the news of his arrival in St. Petersburg. The dream of Lord Seraphim, that there is a lot of alms behind him, is comforting, and worthy of acceptance to the Noble Servant of God Alexy (I apologize, I forgot the fatherland) I call upon God’s blessing with love. I offered the traveler who brought your letter to partake of the holy mysteries in the Lavra, and he is now there. That I am very grateful to you for your letters, I do not bother to say, as something that goes without saying. Know that this is always obvious” (Letters. 1869. pp. 123–124. no. 88). March 5th. Resolution on the consistory ruling in the case of collecting money from the owners of the monastery courtyard: “Please note that the contract mentions a guarantor, but does not have his signature. It is also not good that the contract does not mention that it was concluded with the approval of the spiritual authorities. It is also not good that the transfer was allowed only with the consent of the monastery without the knowledge of the authorities” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 111. No. 9815). A letter to the chief prosecutor of the Holy Synod, N. A. Protasov, with an opinion on the conditions under which the Orenburg schismatics agree to accept priests from the diocesan authorities: “... the requirement that priests not unite for prayer with fellow believers cannot have any other meaning than the one that they want priests who are decidedly schismatic. The requirement that bishops have Old Believer priests “not as affiliated” can also have no other meaning than that these priests must be schismatic. Not joining the church and being a schismatic are one and the same thing. The requirement that the compilers of these conditions leave the name Old Believers cannot be allowed because this name was invented by schismatics solely to decorate these schismatics, and therefore by decree of 1745, May 13th, it is prohibited as containing hidden blasphemy against the Orthodox Church. For if these are truly Old Believers, then the Orthodox will be New Believers; while true, both dogmatic and ritual, antiquity belongs to the Orthodox Church. Therefore, the Orthodox, expressing themselves cautiously, if in the spirit of peace do not want to call schismatics schismatics, then they use the expression: the verb Old Believers, that is, those who call themselves that, and not really such in truth” (Opinions. Vol. III. pp. 95–96). March 6. Resolution on the dean’s report about a particle of the Holy Body that fell on the floor during communion: “The priest should be more attentive and reasonable than a seven-year-old girl, and therefore the blame for accident lies more with him. Moreover, if he had completely preserved himself in reverent attention, he must hope that the Guardian Angel would have protected him from an accident that would offend the shrine. Plan the surface of the stone and put what was planed in the flowing river. To instill in the priest that if he had more reverence and fear of God, he would hasten to directly accept the permission and instruction of the bishop and would not carelessly continue serving without permission in such a case, for which the nomocanon clearly prohibits it, and does not say that this case could ever remain free from penance” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. pp. 169–170. No. 9938). March 7. Consistory proposal: “Find out why in the consecrated cemetery church of the village. Udina is not served by a local priest” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 112. No. 9816). March 8. Resolution on the priest’s report about the accidental spilling of Holy Communion: “To cleanse the conscience in the neglect, so disastrous, send a priest to the Andronievsky rector so that he will keep him this week in the monastery, three days without priestly service, exercising him, in addition to the ordinary Divine service, in reading the canon of repentance and akathists to Jesus To the Sweetest and the Mother of God with bows according to our strength” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 170. No. 9939). March 9. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “You are offering me a good task, and I thank you for encouraging me, but I don’t know if I can fulfill what is required. Given my constant weakness from performing ordinary, inevitable tasks, I don’t see the rest of the time. I would like to do something that is not as fruitless as what I am doing, but even if I want to, I do not achieve good deeds. I know that if the desire were firmer and truer, it would not have happened. It's not about God's help. Pray that I may get rid of laziness and vanity” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 292. No. 366). March 13. Resolution regarding the rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, Archimandrite Eusebius (Orlinsky), with the presentation of the first book of the timely edition of “The Works of the Holy Fathers with Additions of Spiritual Content”: “Thanks be to God for the good beginning. – I subscribe for three copies. Deliver two to me and one to Kolomna, Epiphany Church to priest John Alekseev” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 162. No. 9921). Letter to Archbishop Smaragd (Kryzhanovsky): “You have saddened me with some news. But the best ones reach me from the opposite direction and from different directions. Let us be more willing to believe the good than the contrary, and trust in the infallible providence of the Head of the church and the Savior of the body. Accidents are often special instruments of Providence. Meanwhile, it is our duty to watch over the Lord and pray for everyone and everything” (CHOLDPr. 1870. Book 12. p. 43. - Materials). Letter from E. V. Novosiltseva: “It is my duty in many respects to bring your memory and those who departed before the Lord. Bring Him a prayer for me, as a gift of love for your neighbor” (Letters. 1911. P. 218). Letter from E.V. Novosiltseva: “I am returning the letter. Blessing of peace to Elisaveta Mikhailovna. Tell her this. Say that if there must be patience, then there must also be sorrow; if self-sacrifice is necessary, then it is necessary that not everyone give us what seems due” (Letters. 1911. pp. 218–219). March 14. Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Just as a bad age more readily believes evil than good, temptation comes rather as an edification and one must beware not only of evil, but also of negligence, which may not be much to blame, but nevertheless feeds the temptation” (Letters to Saint Anthony. P. 293. No. 367). March 17. Resolution on the petition of the priest and exhorter of the Kolomna mayor’s administration for his protection due to the insult inflicted on him by the defendant during his admonition: “It is more fitting for the altar servers to forgive the insult than, when the action of justice has already begun, to use special efforts against the offender” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 112. No. 9817). March 18. Letter to the Moscow civil governor I. G. Senyavin: “... secular government officials are strictly forbidden to enter into judgment on matters assigned to the spiritual department; if such cases come to them, they are obliged to turn them immediately to the spiritual government. Therefore, I make it my duty to treat your Excellency, so that you would be pleased to pay attention to whether the Volokolamsk court has truly undertaken an investigation on a subject that is not subject to its consideration, and in this case, to stop the action of this, and notify about the subsequent” (DC. 1891. Ch. 1. No. 3. P. 505). March 23. Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “When the disposition towards a bad opinion is ready, every case, somewhat unseemly, strengthens the bad opinion. Under such circumstances, no amount of caution will suffice, but vigilant caution is nonetheless necessary. Such caution is not evident in the fact that during Cheese Week a large number of monastics came to sing the all-night vigil, at least to a sick person, but to a fashionable family, and then to drink tea and sing the verses of the all-night vigil during tea, who were too lazy to sing during the all-night vigil. At the all-night vigil they would sing for God, and at tea, I’m afraid, they wouldn’t sing the Lord’s song for joy in foreign lands” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 293. No. 368). March 25. Pronunciation of the Word on the day of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos: “The will of God is not sinful. Consequently, obedience to the will of God should protect or save a person from errors and errors. The will of God is all good. Consequently, obedience to the will of God should lead a person to every good. A creature without a Creator is nothing. By the power of the Creator alone she is something. What will the will of man mean if it does not cleave to the will of God by obedience, if it is torn away from it by disobedience? (Works. T. 4. P. 239). March 26. Resolution on the landowner’s request for permission to build a new iconostasis at his expense instead of the one that had fallen into disrepair: “The drawing does not represent correctness, and the decorum of the church is dissatisfied in it, especially in the upper part, which represents the roof and boards, and there are few icons” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 112. No. 9818). March 27. Resolution on the sexton’s testimony against the dean’s denunciation about the sexton’s unauthorized absence: “The dean says: he didn’t let me go; The sexton says: he let me go. There are no witnesses. Consequently, the sexton is suspicious” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 112. No. 9819). March 29. Resolution on the Guardianship journal on the issuance of benefits: “Does the sexton of Chashnikovsky have four children instead of three, he would feed them without having the right to the Trusteeship allowance. Isn't it the same when he has three children and a father? “His two sons benefit from benefits from the seminary. At home, besides his wife, there is one daughter. Why not feed him his father? “It is allowed to give the priest ten rubles in silver as a one-time allowance” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 167. No. 9932). March 30. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I listened to you about Evgeniy. And think about Nikon: would you be pleased if he were transferred to you, and not with a remark that could humble him, but under the name of a serviceable person and, as if in vain, upset by the transfer? Is it philanthropic in relation to the boss to force him to beat those who have not been convicted and thereby be the subject of just murmurs and complaints? Like every neighbor, the Belopesotsky builder 186 must be loved as oneself. And I saw him cry from his subordinates. Don’t be angry and judge whether I’m telling the truth” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 294. No. 369). March 31st. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Read, Father Viceroy, the forwarded letter from the janitor and do not hesitate to tell me your opinion. I don’t want to believe it, but I’m not quite convinced that this is slander. The janitor says what the candle maker said and what they said before, not in St. Petersburg. Even if it’s slander or exaggeration, but if the janitor decides to contact someone in St. Petersburg, those seeking guilt May use it to no avail” (Letters to St. Anthony. pp. 294–295. No. 370). • Diary entry: “Rev. Hypatia Bishop. Last night there was rain, lightning and thunder, and this night snow covered the ground.” March. Comments on the draft ruling of the Holy Synod in the case of the absurd rumors about the Emperor spread by the priests of the city of Porechye: “The three-day delay of the informer, under the unfounded pretext of doubt about who to inform, is a sign of fiction; for if the denunciation were fair, then the loyal subject would announce it to his superiors without hesitating a minute, and would not hesitate for three days, during which an evil rumor would have time to disturb public peace” (Opinions. 1908. P. 18). April 1st. Report to the Holy Synod on the internal renovation of the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Chudov Monastery: “1) The iconostasis, although not particularly antique, is a remarkable imitation of ancient models. 2) The icons in it are quite ancient and decorated. Changing the size of the iconostasis could cause difficulty in placing these icons, which are difficult to replace and which are inconvenient to place besides the iconostasis” (CHOLDPr. 1873. Book 11. P. 139. - Materials). April 2. Resolution on the testimony of the banned priest about the missing icon, given to the painter to correct the face, for which he submitted a receipt: “The consistory will take careful and strict measures to return the icon to the church and examine the priest’s action” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 113. No. 9820). April 4. Resolution on an extract from the laws on the case of the cliques: “The consistory should be referred to the Provincial Board for proper inquiry and legal consideration. To respond [to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod] that although the women mentioned in the report are not shown accusing anyone of corruption, as indicated by Article 36 of Volume XIV of the Code of Laws, and the priest mentions corruption only surmisedly on his own: however, out of an abundance of caution, I instructed the consistory to deal with it” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 114. No. 9821). April 7. Congratulations from the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, on Easter in 1843: “The new Rector of the Moscow Seminary, thank God, well justifies his election. I was given the idea to say this to Your Excellency, by the way, by his sermon I had already read on Great Friday” (Opinions. 1905. P. 99). Pronunciation of the Word on the day of Holy Easter: “One can be surprised and perplexed how it happened that our God-wise Teacher, the Holy Church, assigned us such a difficult lesson from the Gospel on this day of joy. On the day of resurrection, wouldn’t it be closer to talk from the Gospel about the resurrection itself, on the day of joy to arouse and nourish joy in all ways? What was the thought of the Mother Church, according to which, in the midst of joy, she calls her children to difficult reflection on the lofty truth, or to the lofty contemplation of the sacrament of truth? - Without a doubt, she would have recognized this as inappropriate if she had assumed in us a joy that falls into sensuality, mixed with vanity, scattered, noisy, and if she recognized this as appropriate, then, without a doubt, on the assumption that our festive joy should be spiritual, pure, peaceful, sublime; for such joy not only does not prevent thorough and deep reflection, but also makes a person more than ordinary capable of high contemplation” (Works. Vol. 4, pp. 245–246). April 14. Report to the Holy Synod: “As a sign of church communion, I invited the Most Reverend Neophytos 187 to celebrate the Divine Liturgy these days in the Assumption Cathedral or in the cathedral church; but he postponed this until he received the books that had fallen behind on the road, because he uses the Arabic language for prayers” (CHOLDPr. 1874. Book 4. C. 1. - Materials). Letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, about the appointment of a priest to the Edinoverie parish: “On the attitude of Your Excellency, dated April 3, No. 2419, about the speedy departure of the Edinoverie clergy within the Kingdom of Poland, I have the honor to answer that the priest... (from the Kaluga diocese) and the sexton... (from the Moscow Edinoverie churches) were sent to Warsaw on the 19th of last March, with the ancient patriarchal consecration antimension, with the ancient printed Gospel received from the Holy Synod, with ancient sacred vessels, the sacristy and church service books. This was reported in detail by me to the Holy Synod on March 25, No. 132. It was impossible to accomplish this matter more quickly due to the many difficulties encountered in the discovery of capable persons and in the acquisition of the above-mentioned church utensils and books” (Opinions. 1905. P. 102). Letter to Archbishop Parthenius (Chertkov): “I was somewhat unpleasantly ill, which is why I was forced to spend the feast of St. Alexis in my cell. However, thanks be to the punishing mercy. I was honored to perform Chrismation and celebrate the days of Easter in the Assumption Cathedral” (PO. 1872. Book 2/3. No. 9. P. 46. No. 36). Letter to Archbishop Gabriel (Gorodkov): “Is it destined to continue your ministry in the capital, may it be blessed there; is there within your flock, may he be blessed here. In the event of your journey, may I find grace before you, may you not pass me by, ready to meet you with sincere respect and love, with which I always am and hope to remain” (CHOIDR. 1868 Book 2. P. 66). Between March 31 and April 15 (no date). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “You should have listened to what a Frenchman, who was with you at the Lavra on the Tenth Friday, wrote about our clergy and monasticism. There is too much wealth in the churches, he says. The white clergy are uneducated and disreputable. The Lavra monks are full; novices tidy up their hair beautifully. There is little reverent attention in singing. – The government is tempted to see this read in Europe; and the thought may come to you whether this is really true. For me, one remark of the Frenchman seems worthy of attention: the lack of reverent attention in singing. This sin hardly does not happen, especially on holidays, when, trying to sing well, this external attention harms the inner one. It is necessary to tell those who sing that skillful singing is pleasant to people for a short time, but reverent singing is pleasing to God and people, introducing into them the spirit with which it breathes” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 295. No. 371). From the memoirs of Bishop Nikodim (Kazantsev): “The hegumen of the Valaam Monastery, Damascene, a man without any education, visited Metropolitan Philaret (and I was there), in St. Petersburg at the Trinity courtyard, (1842-44), said: “You, Vladyka, have choristers singing in new notes and tunes. It’s a pity. It would be better if they sang according to the ancient church melody.” I felt sorry for the Vladyka, thinking that it would take a long time to convince such an uneducated person that the new singing was not heresy. And he didn’t know what he should say. The Bishop, without thinking anything, immediately said: “Here’s what, Father Abbot: the singers have been singing the same thing for a long time.” I recognize this answer as happy and the only decent and suitable one this time and for such a person” (Kazantsev. P. 106). April 15. Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “With this saving name and good news, I mutually offer you, Father Viceroy, a kiss of joy, peace and love, and so do the brethren of the holy monastery, from the oldest to the youngest. Let us all, by the grace of the child of the Heavenly Father, embrace each other with childlike simplicity, like the Jewish children, crying out to the risen Lord: O Lord, save, O Lord, hasten each and every one to be pleasing to You and to salvation” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 296. No. 372). Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “You, Father Viceroy, seem to be quite angry with the Frenchman, and you almost suspect me of having the same thoughts as the Frenchman. But I told you that one of his accusations may sometimes turn out to be not entirely unfounded, namely that on holidays they sometimes sing with excessive attention to art and therefore with damage to internal attention. I once happened to notice this in the singing of the doxology on a holiday in comparison with the singing of the same doxology at the semi-festive all-night vigil on the day of the Poltava victory” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 296. No. 373). April 16. Letter to Archimandrite Philofey (Uspensky): “I did not give you an answer about Veniaminov; because it is difficult to formulate a decisive thought. As strangers gave it to us: then, perhaps, it would not be a bad thing for you to write about it with sufficient frankness to the director of the spiritual and educational administration” (Letters. 1888. P. 142). April 17. Liturgy and prayer service at the Chudov Monastery on the birthday of the heir to the throne. The sermon was delivered by Archpriest of the Kazan Cathedral Sergius Alekseev (MV. 1843. No. 47. p. 277). Report to the Holy Synod on the presentation of the Metropolitan of Iliopolis Neophytos to the Holy Synod to receive a book for recording offerings in favor of the Antiochian Church: “Both out of brotherly love and respect for the unusual position for the Right Reverend Neophytos, in a new and unknown circle of people, I make it my duty not to renounce the mediation he entrusts to me and therefore his above requests I most respectfully report to the Holy Synod for the gracious discretion and permission” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 175. No. 9951). Letter to Bishop Nikolai (Sokolov): “For your assistance in the work of the Polish Edinoverie Church, I am very grateful to Your Eminence. Without this, I don’t know how I would have finished it. The Holy Synod prescribed and encouraged, and did not provide means. From him I only asked for an old printed Gospel, which, however, I had to bind and decorate. It is a pity that the unity of faith in military settlements, which began brilliantly, does not continue in the same way and that the priests remain in an inactive and, as it were, captive state. It was easier to prevent this from happening than to correct what had been done” (CHOLDPr. 1870. Book 11. P. 26. - Materials). Letter to Archbishop Smaragd (Kryzhanovsky): “Even if the past is truly unsatisfactory, let us not put aside the hope of a better future. There is good news coming from St. Petersburg, although there are no cases yet to be seen that would more decisively indicate the direction. He who is called to act, let him act: whoever cares what the action will be, let him pray for him who is called to act” (CHOLDPr. 1870. Book 12. P. 42. - Materials). April 20. Liturgy service in the Church of St. Vmch. Catherine in one of the Empress’s charitable institutions on the name day of the Empress and the Grand Duchesses Alexandra Nikolaevna and Alexandra Alexandrovna (MV. 1843. No. 49. P. 288). Resolution on an extract from the consistory report register on the case of the return of income received for a wedding: “The dean writes that the priest is awaiting consideration by the highest authorities; but this is not in the priest’s testimony, and the dean writes this out of the blue when he does the matter in writing” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 114. No. 9822). Resolution on the dean’s report about the unrest in the monastery during the service: “As the circumstances of the incident show that the unrest among the people arose from the disclosure of the imaginary danger of the fall of the choir and chandelier, which really did not exist; and this leads to the conclusion that the disclosures were not made by well-intentioned people, then bring this to the attention of the Moscow Military Governor-General and ask that he would be pleased to instruct the police in such cases to pay vigilant attention to the instigator of indecency and restlessness, in order to detain one to prevent confusion and restlessness of the entire assembly" (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 114–115. No. 9823). April 21. Resolution on the dean’s report on the case of the fallen bell: “The archpriest should note that the dean is not a public office and not an archive, and therefore the papers coming to him that are to be processed should not be kept by him, but presented to his superiors in the original” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 115. No. 9824). April 23. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Archpriest Klementyevsky 188 says the truth that the spring prayer service for fruiting was ordered at the same time, for this too, as I think I told you, was requested in the Holy Synod not without difficulty. But you did well that you forced him to pray. I remembered to retell you the legend about the late Bishop Seraphim. You remember the case of the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan in Simonovo and you know what I wrote at the request of the Holy Synod last September, referring to my previous opinion that it was time to ease the previous strict order. They say that some feedback from the Sovereign Emperor finally prompted the members of the Holy Synod to take up this matter and approve my opinion, despite the constant contrary opinion of the leading member. They drew up a protocol, signed everything and presented it to the Bishop through the protocol officer, saying that they found it necessary to decide on this, whatever his opinion. He said a few words consistent with his previous opinion, but promised to respect the general agreement of others. “Leave it with me until tomorrow.” But tomorrow was the day of his death, and he did not sign the decree, the fulfillment of which is still not visible” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 297. No. 374). April 24. Resolution on the archpriest’s report about the priest’s indecent actions: “The priest charged three silver rubles for a marriage and two prayer services, therefore, he is guilty of soliciting income, when he should have been content with what was given” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 116. No. 9825). April 25. Resolution on the petition of a sexton dismissed due to old age with a complaint against his son-in-law, a banned deacon: “The actions of the deacon should be investigated in a legal manner and examined. since the prohibition of priestly service turned out to be insufficient to tame it: then remove it from now on, subject to discretion and from the correction of the clerical position” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 116. No. 9826). Resolution at the presentation from the conference of the Moscow Theological Academy of the manuscript, approved for publication, “Description of the cenobitic Nikolaev Berlyuk Monastery”: “As it is mostly unknown on what the narrative is based, and the legend about Berlyuk, who committed robbery under the auspices of the icon of St. Nicholas, is both unfounded and unseemly and can give rise to temptation, then the publication of the manuscript cannot be recognized as neither useful nor decent” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 163. No. 9922). Letter from M. M. Tuchkova: “I don’t know what you could be afraid of in relations with the spiritual government. But, at your request, I will tell the Consistory to write directly to you. And that you can always, whenever you want, write to me instead of the Consistory or the spiritual government, then, I believe, you have known for a long time” (Letters to Abbess Maria. P. 67. No. 50). Letter from mother: “Matryona’s request is again inconvenient to fulfill. Previously, his parishioners had chosen, out of pity, the wife of a priest, who was lying paralyzed and without a place due to illness, to serve as prosphyrna. You see how difficult it is for me to fulfill my prose. And therefore I ask you not to complain about me when you don’t see fulfillment” (Letters. 1882. P. 366. No. 426). April 26. Resolution on the priest’s testimony that the payment for the prayer service seemed insufficient to him and he asked for more: “The priest, by his own admission, not content with the ten rubles given for the prayer service, came to the store in the evening and asked for half-imperial and 25 rubles in banknotes, therefore, he was guilty of solicitation of income. A special temptation in this regard was that one of the last sums was received from a person who does not belong to the Orthodox Church” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 117. No. 9827). Resolution on the testimony of the banned priest that he accidentally spilled a few drops from the chalice at the Great Entrance · “Although the incident happened before the consecration of the Gifts, even in this case it was offensive to the shrine and to the pious feelings of those present in the church, and the priest acted against the duty of subordination and reverence by not appearing to cleanse the act, subject to the prohibition of priestly service” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 118. No. 9828). Letter to A.N. Muravyov: “The Most Reverend Neophyte, Metropolitan of Illiopolis, envoy of the Patriarch of Antioch, meek Bishop of God, arrived in Moscow. He doesn’t know anyone either here or in St. Petersburg and wants to rely on me for everything, but I don’t know what I can do for him. Meanwhile, he has nothing to do until he receives the book. If you were still at the Holy Synod as before, I would ask you to apply diligence to this matter and bring it to the attention of those on whom a favorable decision depends; Now I don’t know if I can ask you about this; at least, I express my concern, which is not mine, but the once great, now distressed Church, which was the first to speak the name of Christians” (Letters. 1869. P. 125. No. 89). April 27. Attitude to the director of the cadet corps: “Having been an eyewitness and participant in the testing of the cadets of the Moscow Cadet Corps in the teachings of faith, sacred and church history, and the cadets of the junior department in the rudiments of the teachings of Christian and sacred history, I saw with consolation the zealous attentiveness of the cadets to the subject, correct, reasonable and free answers; and also in young people, according to their age, there is quite an excited desire to learn and satisfied successes” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 175. No. 9952). April 28. Letter to A. N. Muravyov: “Aren’t you, Gracious Sir Andrey Nik[olaevich], more upset than before? Will I thank you for being upset? - it’s true that I partly thank you for being upset by my silence, although, on the other hand, I regret that I become the cause of your grief. I am not angry because you are not going to foreign lands, but to Moscow and Kyiv; I wish that you would not be angry at this either” (Letters. 1869. P. 126. No. 90). April 29. Letter from mother: “I received your letter dated 24 days, and I still don’t know what can be done about it” (Letters. 1882. P. 367. No. 427). May 1st. A letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, N. A. Protasov, with an opinion on the case of allowing Chamberlain Lvov, a member of the Moscow prison committee, to publish books of spiritual and moral content for reading by common people: “The note’s author’s remark that the increasing literacy of the people has a need for reading, which can nourish the soul and heart, is fair and worthy of attention. The literacy of common people, turned to reading that is not religious, not moral, not domestic, can become worse than illiteracy. Printing selected passages from the Prologue of the works of St. Demetrius (Tuptalo) 189, the Eminence Tikhon (Sokolov) 190 and other works approved by the church can be allowed to the compiler of the note with relief from intercourse with censored, but not completely unsupervised. For even from an approved work, a passage taken, unsuccessfully separated from the previous and subsequent ones, may be subject to unfavorable and incorrect application” (Opinions. Vol. III pp. 99–100). May 2. Resolution regarding the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, with the transmission of 20 copies of the rules on cutting off fractions of a coin (Resolutions. T. 5. Part 1. P. 170. No. 9940). May 4. Letter from E. V. Novosiltseva: “With gratitude I return these interesting books. Life of St. Afanasia is remarkable, as far as I can judge, not so much by reading as by viewing, because I have time to read everything. The publication of the Gospel is unenviable; because the manuscript is not very ancient and not excellent quality. We have something older and better in our Synodal library. The book that is alone undertakes to teach all languages, but will not teach any” (Letters. 1911. P. 219). May 11. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The deceased Prince Ivan Before his death, Nikolaevich Trubetskoy expressed a desire that his body be laid in the Lavra, under gallery of the refectory church, next to the body of his parent, assuring that this is possible according to space of place. If this really turns out to be possible, satisfy this desire in accuracy, and in case of obstacles, arrange this as close as possible to the will of the deceased" (Letters Reverend Anthony. P. 297. No. 375). May 14. Resolution on the report of the inspector of the Bethany Theological Seminary about two students: not attending the seminary due to his father’s illness and dying in the seminary hospital: “Because father's madness. - Doesn’t father have a name? No. 9923). • Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Some sisters came to Moscow from the Odigitrievsky hostel with the intention of leaving there and spreading stories unfavorable for the hostel. You need to pay attention to this. By the way, they say that from there they often go to the Lavra and live there for a long time. Although there is a legal reason for this, there must also be limits to this. It is not useful for the boss to be away from the hostel often and for a long time. Sometimes travel can be replaced by written communication” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 298. No. 376). May 15. Pronunciation of the Word on the day of remembrance of the holy noble prince Demetrius: “Having before through the eyes of the Royal Martyr, a sacrifice once mourned, but now still living, to the Kingdom and people let us think, brethren, about the beneficial sacrifice that is due from us to God, guided by the Apostolic exhortation: I pray to you, brethren, by the mercies of God, present your body as a living sacrifice, Holy, pleasing to God, is your verbal service” (Works. Vol. 4, p. 248). Resolution on the case of the transfer of deacons: “Grant a deacon’s place at the Iverskaya Church to the eldest son of the deceased priest; and the Iveron deacon, who, out of a desire to do good to the orphaned family, agreed to move to the Znamenskaya Church, transfer to this latter” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 118. No. 9829). May 18. Resolution on the testimony of a sexton, confirming his drunken lifestyle with a promise to improve: “As Moscow churches and parishes require people who are predominantly serviceable and blameless in life, then Skvortsov, after using the means of correction on the spot, who has not corrected himself in behavior and has admitted it, should be removed from this church and assigned to a rural, or in a county town, priestly place” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 119. No. 9830). May 20. Resolution on the petition of the priest and the elder for permission to paint the church from the inside with the renewal of the image on the vault: “The image of the Lord Jesus, kneeling before God the Father, is contrary to the equality of the Persons of the Holy Trinity, is there a heavenly vision represented, as can be noted from the presence of angels. Instruct two deans to inspect all the images of the entire church and report whether there is anything contrary to dogma, sacred history and decency” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part I.S. 119. No. 9831). Resolution on the report of the council established at the Lavra with an explanation of Articles 107 and 116: “Members of the council should be reminded to delve into matters and promote affairs and each other, and not sign indiscriminately” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 161. No. 9917). May 21. Liturgy and prayer service in the Assumption Cathedral on the namesake day of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna and on the birthday of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna. The sermon was delivered by the archpriest of the St. Nicholas Church on Myasnitskaya Ivan Fedorov (MV. 1843. No. 62. P. 370). May 22. Resolution on the petition of sextons Mikhailov and Lavrentiev for the dismissal of the old sexton Lavrentyev from office and the appointment of a nephew in his place, who agrees to buy him a house from Mikhailov: “Because the priest and the parishioners have both in mind, but there is no consent of either the priest or parishioners: then leave this request without action” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 119. No. 9832). May 26. Resolution on the petition of a former deacon appointed as a sexton for permission to perform sacred rites: “As a petitioner, according to a report from the beginning of this year in the village of Sinkovo, he was shown to behave incontinently; and how long he has been in his present place is not stated either in the petition or in the approval, but a short period of serviceability is not enough to certify a valid correction: then permission will be refused” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 120. No. 9833). Resolution on the sexton’s petition for permission to find a groom for his daughter, followed by his assignment to an idle clerk’s position: “Now I receive three petitions nearby, all about brides. One can reason that, with all the desire to promote them, it is impossible to have enough places for this. If he finds a son-in-law and sees the place, let him ask with the registration of what is registered here” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 120. No. 9834). Resolution on the testimony of the priest about the Sacraments of Confession and Communion not being held in 1842: “On the fact that the Gentiles - the owners of the factories - prevent the Orthodox from proceeding to the Holy Mysteries, the Consistory enter into reasoning and present with an opinion” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 120. No. 9835). Resolution on a consistory decision on allowing a sexton to mortgage a house to a private person: “Experience, unfortunately, shows that the multiplication of ways to make debts does not help many people in need, but seduces many with the convenience of borrowing money and, even more so, ruins them” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 121. No. 9836). May 27. Resolution on the request of the dismissed sexton to find a village clerk who will agree to change places with him and undertakes to buy his house: “The choice of someone worthy of the place belongs to the authorities, the priest and the parishioners, and not to the guilty one. However, whether there is someone worthy who would agree to buy a house, this should be accepted with respect” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 121. No. 9837). Letter to mother: “I will be very glad to see you in Moscow. I will go to the Lavra no earlier than June 25; until then I see no reason or convenience to leave Moscow, unless it’s nearby and for a short time. As is my custom, I now use spring treatment, which also keeps me from traveling, although various reasons call me to certain places in the Diocese” (Letters. 1882. P. 367. No. 428). May 29. Resolution on the sexton’s request for permission to set up a tent at his own expense, located between the church and the bell tower, for living in it with the family: “Let him judge about this Consistory. But it seems to me that it is inconvenient to allow a family to live above the entrance to the church. It's another matter Is there an elderly person who leads a rather quiet and silent life who would like to live?” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 122. No. 9838). Resolution on the Consistory’s journal ruling on the planting of a dead baby: “The baby, to hide the culprit, was planted, probably not from a nearby deposit. Therefore, it would be necessary to ask many priests. If one or more priests named one or more illegitimate babies, this would not make the matter clear, for it could happen that the abandoned baby is not one of them at all; and meanwhile, the priests, having become informers, would have become less accessible to those who sinned, as a result of which unfortunate born babies would die without baptism” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 122. No. 9839). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Father Governor, Andrei Nikolaevich, is traveling to you, with a companion. Resolution on the report of the abbot of the monastery on the testing of an elderly priest with weak eyesight while serving the liturgy: “As a priest, due to weak eyesight, can serve only when absolutely necessary, then, so that nothing indecent and offensive to the sanctuary happens during the service: dismiss him, at eighty-two years of age, from active service and allow him to choose a worthy one in his place” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. pp. 122–123 No. 9840). June 4. Resolution on the dean’s report that the priest of the village of Voronova charges a moderate fee for services: “The dean writes that parishioners first paid three rubles, and then the priest began to charge 10 rubles, and this was supposedly by voluntary consent. But the very expression: he began to collect - shows that it was not the parishioners who voluntarily increased the giving, but this was done through the efforts of the priest” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 123. No. 9841). June 8. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Nahum says that the leg Yours has recovered. Consistory: entrust this matter to another, nearby, more prudent priest; Muromtsovsky to note that those who come to the holy church should be received with condescension and not be bothered by exaggerated demands” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 124. No. 9843). June 11. Report to the Holy Synod about the archimandrite who arrived from Athos: “Sent from the monastery of St. Mount Athos for the management of the St. Nicholas Greek Monastery in Moscow, in place of Archimandrite Gabriel, Archimandrite Agafangel with the hieromonks who were with him: Procopius and Dorotheus and the monk Anthimus, arrived in Moscow and, appearing to me, presented a letter addressed to the Holy Governing Synod, which I most respectfully present to this Holy Synod, informing that I ordered the Consistory to instruct the dean of the Moscow monasteries to introduce Archimandrite Agathangel into office in the proper manner” (CHOLDPr. 1878. Book 9. P. 126. - Materials). June 16. Resolution on a consistory decision with the opinion of Bishop Joseph (Theologian) of Dmitrov about a student of the Bethany Seminary who commits inappropriate acts: “Calling the dean a snitch is a direct insult to him. Whether this is an insult to the authorities, as the Consistory thinks, I leave this without consideration or prosecution. But the student’s actions and all the expressions of his letter reveal such baseness of character, such bad manners and lack of a sense of modesty and decency that it is impossible to honor him with the priestly degree without the discretion of correction and improvement” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 124. No. 9844). June 17. Letter N. G. Senyavin: “For the return ... of the peasants to Orthodoxy, making orders for the spiritual department that depend on me, I decided to ask Your Excellency as a duty, so that in the case of the peasant Pavel Egorov Yazev, who, having seduced himself, led others into schism by reading schismatic books to them, you would be pleased to order that the schismatic books in his possession be selected and presented for examination” (PC. 1886. T. 51. No. 8. P. 200). June 22. Letter to A. A. Alfonsky: “With pleasure and gratitude I received a copy of the speeches delivered at the ceremonial meeting of the Moscow Imperial University this June 19th. This will reward me for the deprivation that I suffered; I was forced, due to the circumstances of my health and treatment, not to participate in this meeting” (CHOIDR. 1880. Book 4. No. 4. P. 2). June 24. Liturgy and prayer service, the Word was pronounced in the Assumption Cathedral on the birthday of the Emperor and Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna (MB. 1843. No. 77. P. 462). Resolution on the dean’s report on the observance of proper order during the religious procession: “Ahead of the religious procession, a deacon with a priestly cane and a hat in a scarf walked past the bishop and entered the monastery. It’s not appropriate to open a procession like that” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 125. No. 9845). Resolution on the seminarian’s petition to appoint him to a priestly place: “Is this place idle, then determine it to the Ascension nunnery of the priest Nikolai Smirnov; because by the decree of June 16, 1729, widowed clergy were not ordered to be at nunnery monasteries” (Resolutions T. 5. 4. 1. P. 125. No. 9846). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Since the Academy asked me with indifferent bewilderment whether the test should be carried out without me or with me, I did not prefer the latter. But the field that is most close and accessible to everyone, in which the treasure of grace is hidden, is the Church” (Works. Vol. 4, pp. 257–258). June 29. Resolution on the report of the acting dean about the indecent actions of the priest: “Priest Belorastov admitted that he walked around the parish with icons coolly, drank wine and smoked tobacco, the peasants testified that he asked for tobacco, smoked tobacco, drank wine, went to bed, drank again in the morning and, after taking the icons out to the field, could not serve a prayer service due to drunkenness. To stop such temptations, remove him immediately from this place with a ban on priestly service, wearing a cassock and blessing with the hand” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 125. No. 9847). Resolution on the presentation from the MLA conference of a translation into Russian of part of Gederic’s Greek-Latin lexicon with an opinion on the translator’s remuneration: “The conference can do as it pleases. But I am not convinced to join this cause with my consent. I look, for example, at the page. accidentally opened, and read θαφός - lining in the coal shaft of the cart. How can there be a lining in the shaft? What is a charcoal shaft at the lining? Gederik has axis. Ωαϰήμα seat, place, seat. The place does not express the words: domicilium Ωαλαμέυω is unsatisfactorily translated. Ωαλάμη – shelter. There is no such word in Russian. Ωαλάμηηος – a ship in Egypt. What is it? Kind of gondola? It doesn't look like it. Ωαλάμηηος – belonging to the bedroom, in general to θάλαμος. What is: generally belonging to θάλαμος? Ωαλαμηποφος - saving the bed, located near it. Wrong. It must be said: the keeper of the resting room. Eunuchs, castrati. What's the last word? Let's open another place. Κάλλαια – a backstairs for roosters. What is this? Protasov, about the Neophyte Metropolitan of Illiopolis who arrived in Moscow to collect donations in favor of the Antioch Patriarchate: “Brotherly compassion for the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Illiopolis makes me worry Your Excellency with seven lines. For the third month he has been living in Moscow in inactivity, in need, and of course not without sorrow. He officiated here three times, and the last time on Sunday in the Assumption Cathedral, but he cannot begin collecting offerings for the Antioch Church, because he does not have a book from the Holy Synod. Please pay attention to this, so that he, as he wishes and should, be called to the Holy Synod or, whether this cannot happen soon, so that he receives in Moscow the book promised from the Holy Synod and can begin with it to fulfill his assignment” (Opinions. 1905. P. 105). July 5th. Pronunciation of the Word on the day of the discovery of the relics of St. Sergius: “What is it to ask in the name of the Lord Jesus? - Just this for simple, sincere and humble hearts, and without research explanation, either understandable to them, or perceptible. Myrrh poured out Your name (Song 1:2), Lord Jesus! When myrrh is poured out, its fragrance spreads and the undulled or unsuppressed sense of smell, without art or effort, receives a sensation that is delightful and encouraging. When the name of the Lord Jesus is poured out in prayer: the fragrance of the Holy Spirit spreads from it; and the heart, not burdened by earthly attachments, not drowned out by passions, the inner feeling easily and simply accepts the feeling of grace, delighting and elevating” (Works. Vol. 4. P. 264). July 9. Letter to Bishop Joseph (Kobylsky-Theological): “I thank Your Eminence for remembering and caring about my weakness. In the rain, some of it heavy, I arrived at the Lavra safely, except that my sick eye was still in Moscow, and on the road I communicated the illness to another. This, however, has passed. Resolution regarding the acting manager of the Moscow Chamber of State Property on the appointment of positions of chiefs and assistant chiefs and payment for them for the established parish rural schools: “Due to the lack of reference manuals with me, in order to speed up the matter, I grant the Reverend, using the manual of some members of the Consistory who are more knowledgeable about the rural clergy, to compile the required list of those appointed as mentors of rural schools and as assistants to them and submit to me, if possible, without delays" (Resolutions. This book asserts that the first worship was a sacrifice, that sacrifices were not established by God, but invented by primitive people, and, moreover, not for God, but for the gods. T. add. pp. 639–641). • Resolution on the consistory decision on sending the former dean to David's Hermitage for six weeks for drunken lifestyle: “In respect of the confession, forgive the priest and do not send him to the monastery, but only as a precaution give him for a year under the special supervision of the dean” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. S. No. 9849). July 17. Letter from M. M. Tuchkova: “I ask you to maintain peace of mind in every possible way. This is a medicine that you can always give to yourself and which is no less important than external medical means for the body, but much more so for the soul. I knew a man who, having become ill, said to himself: “Now the Lord does not require from you efforts that, perhaps, you would not use fully, or incorrectly, or not to the point; nor deeds for which you should be responsible, but requires that you simply and obediently accept what He is doing with you.” And, thus, he had peace in illness, more than a state of health” (Letters to Abbess Maria. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 129. No. 9857). July 30. Report to the Holy Synod about damage in the church: “The dean of the Ivanovo Forty, Predtechevskaya, in the Treasury Church, Archpriest Pavel Platonov reported to me the following: on the 20th of this July, at 6 o’clock in the afternoon, a cloud appeared from the northwest, accompanied by a storm and heavy hail. According to the information he, the dean, collected, it turned out that in the Peter and Paul Church in Lefortovo the foot of the cross placed on top of the iconostasis was broken by lightning; chips from this base were found in different places in the cold and even warm church, but on the iconostasis and nowhere in the church there were no other traces of the action of lightning, nor where it penetrated into the church” (DC. 1890. Part 3. No. 12. P. 644). • Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I reached Moscow safely and still don’t see that there was any particular need for me to be here, except that I celebrated in Novodevichy with the abbess 191, who is not very keen on celebrating this holiday another time” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 300. No. 382). July 31st. Resolution on the dean’s report about the priests abandoning the religious procession: “Are there some who left the religious procession untimely and it is unknown who and why: then the goal of supervision was not achieved and, perhaps, there are lazy ones. Therefore, during the religious procession, the dean should notice who abandoned the religious procession, and such and especially those who are not justified by a blessed and necessary reason, give information to the taxiarch, for presentation to the authorities” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 130. No. 9858). August 2. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “God will bless you, Father Viceroy, to create a cell in Mahra; and may blessing and peace, good deeds and pure contemplation dwell in her. Only you say: at my expense, at least it happened for the monastery. And I say: why and not at the monastery’s expense, although for you? Couldn't the forest be a monastery forest? Does it take long to cook? – Do as you know; just know that I agree about the monastery” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 300. No. 383). August 3. Resolution on an extract from the consistory report register on the baptism of a Jewish tradesman and on the disappearance of his son Aaron: “As Aaron’s evasion from baptism reveals his reluctance to accept Christianity, then the matter of his baptism should be stopped. To reprimand the Serbian priest for presenting him trustworthy for baptism, and to confirm that in such cases he should more carefully inquire into the truth and make doubtful representations to his superiors” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 131. No. 9859). Resolution on the dean’s report about disorganization during the religious procession: “It is necessary that the taxiarch carefully calculate the time and let the banner bearers know when to move; and also carefully calculated the space and assigned where the clergy should begin to stop, and if there is excess space, they should stand less often and occupy the entire space, and not crowd into one place and then leave empty space” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 131. No. 9860). August 4th. Resolution on the testimony of the sacristan of the Chudov Monastery about his absence from the monastery: “The sacristan committed an important offense, because he absented himself without permission during the Divine service without an urgent need, by his absence he made a complete stop in the deliberate hierarchal service, and this became public in the cathedral” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 161. No. 9918). August 7. Resolution on the priest’s signature about banning him from the priesthood: “The priest must now be obliged to subscribe so that he does not arbitrarily collect money through the inappropriately named Sunday reading, so that the money received from investors is immediately brought into the church, recorded in the receipt and expenditure books and used, in agreement with the church warden, for legitimate needs, so that unnecessary decorations are beyond his means.” did not undertake and did not burden the church with debts, under fear of strict liability” (Resolutions. Resolution on the report of the Kolomna spiritual board about two foreigners, allegedly Greeks, posing as a deacon and a novice and collecting donations for the renewal of the monastery; and after their departure about two more who appeared in Kolomna, sent from Jerusalem to collect donations: “Because the imaginary feks walked around several districts, and in July they showed up in Kolomna district; and from unofficial but reliable information it is known that in the Ryazan province some of them were caught and turned out to be gypsies, then the Kolomna Spiritual Board and the dean strictly confirm that unknown people who show themselves to be foreign clergy, sent to gather at churches or monasteries, are not allowed to collect, they are announced to the police and immediately reported to the authorities, and the Orthodox people are warned against deception" (Resolutions. T. 5. Part 1. P. 132. No. 9862). August 9. Resolution on the consistory decision on the election of a confessor: “A confessor should be chosen not by proximity, but by edification. Resolution on the testimony of the priest of the Ruza district that the peasant boys studying with him were not forced to do housework, only, perhaps, once or twice at their will: “As the priest shows that the use of boys for housework does not happen at all, and immediately admits that this could have happened no more than once or twice in his free time from teaching, then for both incorrect action and for inconsistency in the testimony, reprimand him with confirmation from the authorities execute correctly” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 133. No. 9863). August 10. Resolution on the testimony of the priest of the Vereisky district that he used the peasant boys studying with him for household work: “The priest, whom I personally questioned, explained with signs of straightforwardness that he forced the students to sweep the room in which they studied, and rarely took those older in his free time to help with cleaning the hay. As proof that the authorities were pleased with his actions, he showed me the attitude of the district commander, in which a book was sent to an excellent student. To end the difficulties, he wants to be dismissed from this assignment. Therefore, fire him. The consistory should elect another in his place in case of need” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 134. No. 9864). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Read, Father Viceroy, the enclosed letter to Hieromonk Samuil and ask whether there were any minors with him on the journey and whether he was recognized as a gypsy. You need to know that people were wandering around the local diocese calling themselves monks sent from Jerusalem to collect alms; some of them were caught in the Ryazan province, and they admitted that they were not Jerusalem envoys, but gypsies. That’s why I look suspiciously at people passing by. And this is how inconvenient it is for a monk to even have his mother close to him” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 301. No. 384). August 12. Resolution on the watchman’s request to provide him with benefits for moving the house: “To submit a certificate to the consistory whether the petitioner is approved of his behavior” (Resolutions. No. 9874). • Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “I rejoice that many honor the time sanctified in honor of the transfigured Lord and His Most Pure Mother, and seek communion with Him in the Sacrament” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 302. No. 385). August 15. Pronunciation of the Word on the day of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos: “After the words of the Evangelist that we have examined, his silence is also worthy of reflection. During the initial events of Christ’s earthly life, he noted twice that the Mother of the Lord kept all these verbs in her heart: but then, throughout the continuation of his Gospel, he does not resume such remarks and does not bother to explain what effect the life of the Lord Jesus had on the life of His Mother. What does this mean, after some excess in the word, as if stingy silence? In order not to present the sacred writer as disagreeing with himself, it seems that we must assume from him the idea that with the above two-fold remark He gave the key to the entire life of the Blessed Virgin and acknowledged this with satisfaction. In fact, if you ask, what did the Mother of the Lord do when the Lord Jesus preached, worked miracles, suffered, died, rose again, and ascended into heaven? To all this one can give one answer: keep all these words in your heart. This also explains what is especially incomprehensible in Her life, which is unparalleled for the rest of humanity. For example, how could She, both without mistrust and without exaltation, accept the highest annunciation about the seedless and God-received conception. She could because even then she kept in her heart the prophetic verbs about Christ. How did she go through the difficulties, disasters, fears that surrounded the birth and infancy of Her Son? Without a doubt, with unshakable firmness and hope, because she kept in her heart the words of the promises about Him. How did you endure His removal when He went out to preach the salvation of men and at the same time to face His own dangers? Without a doubt, with devotion, because I kept in my heart His preliminary verb: in those who are My Father, I am worthy to be (Luke 2:49). How did the weapon of grief that passed through Her soul not kill Her during the hours of suffering and death of Her Son and God? It did not kill, because She had previously tested this weapon that came from the mouth of Simeon the God-Receiver and prepared Her heart to accept the wound of the verb of death and to heal it with the verb of resurrection. How She remained alive when, with the Ascension of the Lord into heaven, that with which She alone lived was hidden from the earth. Christ and His words continued to live in Her heart, and She lived a life of faith, love and hope, until through the path that we call death, She could pass to Him into a life of love, bliss and glory” (Works. Vol. 4, pp. 630–631). • Letter to Archimandrite Philofey (Uspensky): “Suggest, Father Rector, the attached manuscript: “Narration of the conversion of Bronina from the Pomeranian persuasion” - for consideration by the censorship committee, and if it is approved for publication, return it to me. You will see that some places in it have been cleared, but this does not prevent the committee from examining it carefully” (Letters. 1888. P. 142). August 16. Resolution on the presentation from Bishop Joseph (Kobylsky-Bogoslovsky) and members of the consistory of a list of candidates for the positions of mentor of rural schools and his assistant: “The Myshkin priest Sokolov, although he was accused of using students for homework, according to the explanation given to him ... and for his otherwise approving service, can continue to enjoy the trust of his superiors” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 134. No. 9865). August 17. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “About what you said to me at the door, when I left the Lavra, it would be desirable to have some explanation for my identification. If you could tell me from what source what you said was borrowed, I think it would be useful to me and not harmful to anyone. The point is to decide more accurately what to do or what not to do at all, and not to be pleased or dissatisfied with someone. Thank God for everything. Peace to all” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 302. No. 386). August 18. Resolution on the petition of parishioners to appoint to the church a professor of the Bethany Theological Seminary for a priestly position, who has already submitted a petition with an obligation to marry the niece of the deceased priest of this church: “The consistory will talk about the professor with the seminary Board, can he be dismissed, and in all cases demand a certificate, whether, as the one who submitted this petition assures, the church warden and others agree to this parishioners." Repeated resolution on the parishioners’ petition for the appointment of a professor of the Bethany Theological Seminary to the church for the priestly position: “Following the acceptance of this petition and the writing of the previous resolution, the church warden and another honorary parishioner appeared and announced that they and most of the parishioners who are constantly living with this church do not agree to this petition, among other things, because whether and when the professor will be dismissed from the school service, they do not know, but to remain It is difficult for a church without a priest, and that they and other parishioners want to have either a deacon, which they asked for before, or Trinity, on Khokhlovka, priest Alexei Belyaev. Thus, it became necessary to take into account... that of the two candidates accepted by the parishioners, priest Belyaev has the undeniable advantage of long-term service with approved behavior” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 135. No. 9866). August 21. No. 387). August 27. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 135. No. 9867). September 1st. Resolution regarding the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, with the approved estimate of the Construction Committee of the Moscow Theological Seminary for new furniture: “I cannot help but admit that I see with displeasure the action of the Construction Committee to increase luxury in furnishings, even against the St. Petersburg seminary. What kind of card tables are there in the seminary Board? “Immediately take into account the implementation of the permitted furnishings with the removal of everything unnecessary and with strict adherence to frugality and, as required, present, among other things, the timing of the release of amounts” (Resolutions. Vol. 5 · Part 1. P. 171. No. 9942). • From the memoirs of Bishop Nikodim (Kazantsev): “Once, seeing before him a student of Theology (Egor Lyubimov, my comrade) in a cloth frock coat, Vladyka asked: “Whose frock coat are you wearing?” The student answered: “Government.” (Lyubimov was a government official.) Vladyka: “Such a frock coat could be worn by a Professor.” The cloth is dark green. Its price is 5 rubles banknotes arshins. Vladyka, of course, was not joking. And I think so... Vladyka condemned the pomp in the seminaries. He talked about contemporary Lavrsky teachers and scientists. They then wore thick, stuffed linen robes” (Kazantsev, pp. 80, 85). September 3. Resolution on an extract from the consistory report register with a ruling on the wedding case (Resolutions. T. 5. Part 1. P. 136. No. 9868). Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “You founded the house when I consecrated the church in Serpukhov. May the Lord create and establish, and fill the house of your soul with His light and His silence. It would be good if the Mother of God blessed the monastery of Gethsemane” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 303. No. 388). September 4. Resolution on the case of repairs in the Ugreshsky monastery: “The top of the northern door to the church forms an irregular semicircle, not as in the drawing, but with a pointed point, which, however, deserves an apology because this door was left in its original form and, consequently, evidence of the antiquity of this building was preserved” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 136. No. 9869). Resolution on the petition of the wife of an actual state councilor for the dismissal of a sexton who behaved indecently and is the father-in-law of a local sexton: “As a sexton, Nedumov is not approved of, and is now involved in the matter: then it is necessary to separate the relationship in accordance with this petition” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 137. No. 9870). September 9. Resolution on the testimony of a priest who, at the invitation of the elder, served the early liturgy and, with the help of a sexton, retrieved the sacred vessels: “The cleric, a widower, for entering the altar and touching objects that are inviolable for a widower, should be sent to the Archangel Cathedral to perform one hundred bows, and to give him proper confirmation for the future, confirming also to the local priest, so that did not allow anything that was not permitted” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 137. No. 9871). September 11th. Pronunciation of the Word on the day of the celebration of the birth of Grand Duke Nikolai Alexandrovich: “You know the custom of the Holy Church that at the onset of the holiday, even in the beginning of the evening Divine service, it opens the Holy Scripture and in it shows a mirror and an image of what constitutes the subject of the holiday. For example, celebrating the memory of the Righteous One, she proclaims from the holy book: the memory of the righteous is with praise (Proverbs 10:7). Thus, the spiritual legitimacy of the holiday is confirmed by the word of God; the essence or mystery of the holiday is explained, and the joy of the holiday receives new light” (Works. Vol. 4, p. 268). Letter to the Viceroy of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Pray, Father Viceroy, may the Lord bless the newborn Grand Duke Nikolai Alexandrovich with age and prosperity. It’s joyful to think how happy my parents and grandparents are with this complete joy. But now there’s a new difficulty for me. The Sovereign Emperor, having probably learned by telegraph in Warsaw about the birth of his grandson, will arrive in St. Petersburg for baptism; and then when, whether directly to Moscow or the same route, it is not at all possible to guess. Therefore, I cannot say anything at all about my path to you. Pray for me and be at peace” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 304. No. 389). Letter from mother: “We suddenly celebrated today. God pleased the Sovereign Heir Tsarevich with his Son 192 on the day of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. With benefit, and not because people do not judge as they would like” (Letters. 1911. P. 221). September 18. Resolution on an extract from the consistory report register on the case of the claims of the parish priest when correcting the requirements (Resolutions. T. 5. Part 1. P. 138. No. 9872). Resolution on the consistory ruling in the case of issuing a metric certificate to a peasant with an incorrect indication of his age: “As per the decree of the Holy Synod, officials or volost leaders should check the recruitment lists, and allow the clergy to do so; but the priest himself noted the years in the list, and in the twilight darkness, as witnesses show, without making out the years in the confession book, he marked them erroneously, then give him a strict reprimand for this with confirmation to more accurately fulfill the instructions of his superiors, which, however, is not included in his service record, in respect of approved behavior. And just as the one sent from the volost authorities did not fulfill his duty to personally verify the recruitment list with church documents, through which, by providing assistance to the priest, he could have prevented an error: then the examination of this malfunction should be left to the Chamber of State Property” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 138. No. 9873). • Resolution on the testimony of the dean in the case of the postponed (due to a missing entry in the death certificate) burial of the baby: “The consistory should admonish both the dean and the Biserovsky priest, and strictly confirm that they protect the peace of the parishioners from vain orderly cavils and oppressions that are not characteristic of the priesthood” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 139. No. 9875). September 21. Resolution on a consistory certificate in the case of providing benefits to a watchman for moving a house: “Give twenty-five rubles in banknotes from me; the same number from Chudov and the same number from the Joseph Monastery” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 139. No. 9874). September 22. Letter to Count V.D. Olsufiev: “The Sovereign Heir Tsarevich, following the example of His August Parent, as a sign of reverent gratitude to the Lord God for the gift of His Highness the Son V.K. Nikolai Alexandrovich, deigns to build a chapel in the Resurrection Monastery in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and if there is already one there, then in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Our Lady, the Mother of God, and deigned to command me to enter into communication with me on this subject... In a vast church, in which there are already 37 altars, it is difficult to assign a place for a new chapel in absentia. Therefore, if His Highness were pleased to use me as one of the instruments for the fulfillment of His pious intentions, I would be duty-bound to arrange with the architect whom His Highness would be pleased to appoint, to go to the place in order to, based on a direct survey of all parts of the church, choose the most decent and convenient place for the new chapel” (CHOLDPr. 1872. Book 7. P. 128–130. – Materials). September 23. Resolution on the petition of an honorary citizen to accept a donation for the eternal commemoration of his deceased wife (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 167. No. 9933). September 24. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Bring me, Father Viceroy, to the feet of our Reverend and God-Bearing Father Sergius and ask me for blessings, protection and forgiveness, both in many ways, and in the fact that I do not now come to him to celebrate his memory. Tomorrow we expect the Empress and now or tomorrow the Sovereign Emperor. Pray that we may meet with joy, blessed by God, God-pleasing” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 304. No. 390). September 25. Meeting of the imperial family at the Chudov Monastery. A prayer service was served, an icon of St. Alexy of Moscow (MV. 1843. No. 116. P. 687). • The resolution on the clergy’s petition was not to present drawings depicting ancient Greek painting, but to make murals based on the models of the Assumption and Archangel Cathedrals: “The churches in Moscow are numerous, but the parishes, in terms of the sheer number of churches, are small; and therefore, maintaining churches in their improvement and decorating them through ordinary church income would for the most part be impossible. This deficiency is replenished by the zeal of church elders who have their own excess wealth, or who actively resort to the zeal of other sufficient people. Under such circumstances, it is rarely possible to make a significant capital in advance for any church business. Would the Holy Synod, in condescending attention to local circumstances and to the fact that mural painting is being undertaken in the aisles, not in the renovation of the ancient, but on the bare walls to this day, would have authorized the production of an onago in the Greek style, in accordance with the indicated images under unrelenting local supervision without the presentation of detailed designs: this would have served a lot to carry out the work without much delay” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 140. No. 9876). September 27. Letter to the Moscow military governor-general, Prince A.G. Shcherbatov: “Most distinguished prince, dear sir! With the most respectful regard. s-va, dated September 27, No. 5350, the Highest command of the Sovereign Emperor was announced to me to consecrate the church built at the Exercishaus before October 1. To this I hasten to answer that this Highest command has to be fulfilled by me on Wednesday the 29th day” (DC. 1895. Part 3. No. 9. P. 42). Letter to mother: “I could not celebrate the day of St. Sergius in the Lavra: but on this day we were consoled by the meeting in the Assumption Cathedral of the Sovereign Emperor and Sovereign Heir Tsesarevich; the next day, together with them, and the Empress, who arrived after them, with the Grand Duchesses and Her daughters, listened to a solemn thanksgiving service in the Cathedral Church of the Chudov Monastery. These days were comforting and prosperous: The distinguished and desired Guests were healthy and joyful. When God grants to see them off safely, I am thinking of leaving for the Lavra for local affairs 193 and for some rest” (Letters. 1882. P. 369. No. 430). September 28. Delivering a speech to the soldiers in the highest presence of Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich during a thanksgiving service: “So, God loves a good-natured world: and God blesses righteous warfare. For since there are non-peaceful people on earth, peace cannot be achieved without military help. An honest and trustworthy world must, for the most part, be conquered. And in order to preserve the acquired peace, it is necessary that the winner himself does not allow his weapons to rust” (Works. Vol. 4. P. 271). October 6. Resolution on the priest’s report on the wedding of persons who are related: “When asked what degree these spouses are, the priest answered: they say, in the eighth, as if it was not his business to know this. Send him to the Arbat archpriest to learn how to count the degrees of kinship according to the Helmsman, without which he cannot faithfully fulfill his position regarding marriages” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 142. No. 9878). Resolution on a consistory decision about a fight between a priest and a deacon (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 143. No. 9879). Resolution on the consistory ruling in the case of burial in the monastery without the knowledge of the police: “The court with amazing haste believed the report of the criminals against the monastery authorities, who were irritated at this authority because it had handed them over to justice” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 143. No. 9880). October 8. Resolution on the request of a supernumerary priest for permission to serve in Moscow wherever possible and to find a place: “As he asked for dismissal due to old age to support his son-in-law, then, if he asked fairly, then he is asking unfairly now, and if he asked then unfairly, then this petition deserves satisfaction even less” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 144. No. 9881). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The expectation of the Sovereign Emperor was combined with guesses and rumors, based on which it was difficult to decide on anything. Prince Sergius Mikhailovich especially persuaded me not to go to the Lavra; and truly the meeting of the Emperor in the Assumption Cathedral took place on the very day of St. Sergius. I served a prayer service and all-night vigil in the evening, and on the holiday itself I only raised the name of St. Sergius at a prayer service in the cathedral. Then there was a prayer service of gratitude in the presence of all the distinguished visitors in Chudovo, then, by the will of the Emperor, the consecration of the church, then a prayer service for the soldiers. All this was connected with accidents and circumstances that complicated my weakness; however, thanksgiving to the blessing and prayers of St. Sergius took place in the world” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 305. No. 391). October 10. Serving the liturgy and prayer service in the Assumption Cathedral, accompanying the religious procession around the Kremlin on the day of remembrance of the expulsion of the French from Moscow in 1812 (MB. 1843. No. 125. P. 743). Resolution on the petition of the dismissed deacon for the assignment of benefits to him: “When I was in Podolsk, I had information that the petitioner was in need. As a reinforcement, assign him and his wife an allowance from their son of five silver rubles per third for both of them for two years” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 167. No. 9934). Resolution on the letter of the hieromonk with a request to move him to the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery to fulfill the vow he had made: “... it does not belong to me to release the hieromonk from his vow, after he left the diocese entrusted to me and caused difficulty in fulfilling the vow to himself” (DC. 1879. Part 1. No. 3. P. 389). Letter to the abbot of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “In the Serpukhov Vladychny Monastery, one of the old fools there 194 treated me kindly, took a blessing several times, and when the archpriest contradicted her somewhat, she said, among other things, in justification: “You’re going to St. Petersburg and maybe you won’t come for a long time.” However, I think that these thoughts are only from the past, and not for the future. What he doesn’t want to go to St. Petersburg, if I’m not mistaken, is not wounded pride, but weakness and confidence, greater than ever, that to travel to St. Petersburg with benefit one needs virtues and virtues, which I lack for the service here, and even more so for the service there. The thought that they don’t need me there is just as convincing for me as it is reassuring” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 306. No. 392). October 11. Resolution regarding the manager of the Moscow Chamber of State Property with a request for archpastoral instructions to priests elected as mentors of parish schools: “The goal of teaching is not just to convey certain concepts to the memory of students, but to establish in their hearts the Orthodox concepts of God and Christ the Savior, piety, reverence for the Autocrat, obedience to superiors, good behavior, so that teaching became in them the basis of a good and prosperous life. Treat students meekly and with fatherly love, so that a good teacher makes learning enjoyable” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 171. No. 9943). October 12. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The weather has improved, and I would not be afraid of the road to go to the Lavra; but I am held back by the anticipation of the celebration of the baptism of the Grand Duke” (Letters to St. Anthony. Resolution on the testimony of a banned priest about his performing services in foreign parishes in order to acquire donations for the construction of a church: “Because it has been noticed more than once that rural priests on holidays and fasts, leaving service in their churches, come to perform it in Moscow, for the sake of self-interest, which is not worthy of the priesthood, is harmful for rural churches and parishes and is not necessary for Moscow churches, which, if necessary, can borrow employees from monasteries and those not in active service, then order that priests in active service in rural churches should not be allowed to serve in Moscow, and especially on holidays and fasts” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 144. No. 9882). October 17. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 145. No. 9883). Resolution on the consistory decision that the banned priest should remain in the clergy position until repentance and complete correction: “Approved. It is impossible to justify the priest’s answer: come when the patient begins to speak. Vol. 5. Part 1.S. 145. No. 9884). October 20. Presentation of certificates and medals together with Prince A. G. I'm sleeping, but my heart is awake. We must maintain our independence. Stay awake, be wise, be strong, pray. Although the Lord is always with you, caution is needed. Do everything as the Lord commanded, and He will help you in everything. Accept everyone, but be careful with everyone.” October 21. Letter to mother: “Having heard that you are not entirely healthy, I could not help but be concerned. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Until now, I have been kept from traveling to the Lavra; now I was thinking of freeing myself by performing the required consecration of the antimensions and a prayer service for the health of the August House on the occasion of the distribution of alms, which was granted by the Sovereign Emperor upon the birth of Prince Nicholas Maximilianovich 195. But the path is shown to me in the other direction. Make a prayer to the Lord, with the intercession of St. Sergius, that His servant Evdokia, my mother, may receive good help. I am going to her on the news of her illness, which is not quite definite, but concerning, especially given her advanced years” (Letters to St. Anthony. pp. 307–308. No. 395). Letter to Prince S. M. P. 41. No. 43). Letter to A. N. Muravyov: “Think with me. Since yesterday I have been watching how the baby Count Sheremetev rests peacefully - in a coffin. It is impossible to think about this loss without sympathy, and especially to see the sadness of the parents, all the more touching because it is meek and humble. Let us pray for their consolation, worship the inscrutable destinies of God and think about the path that infant feet travel better than us” (Letters. 1869. P. 127. No. 9I). October 28. Resolution on the dean’s report about the deacon, sexton and sexton, who built houses on church land without the permission of their superiors and rented them out: “Take detailed testimony from the deacon, sexton and sexton to the spiritual Board, how much land was given, to whom, for how many years, for what price, when, why, contrary to the law, without the knowledge of the authorities, and, what they show, present, inspiring them that this willful and illegal action of theirs, harmful to church property, may subject them to deprivation of their places, unless things are brought into legal order” (Resolutions. She will encourage him, in every communication with them, to sincerely invoke God’s blessing for this, and will teach him to represent for them a father by sincere and prudent concern for them, and an elder brother by treating them with a meek, friendly, condescending, always alien to presumption and impatience, but never alien to the sedateness and modest importance inherent in the rank” (DC. 1872. Part 2. No. 6 pp. 222–228). November 1st. Diary entry: “Cosmas and Damian. Last Monday we traveled to Kolomna for about 12 hours, and now a little more. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 172. No. 9945). Letter to mother: “We made the journey from Kolomna to Moscow, at about 16 o’clock, not without difficulty along a bad road, especially in the first half, but safely and without any unpleasant adventures” (Letters. 1882. P. 371. No. 433). November 3. Resolution on the consistory decision about prosphyrna leading a drunken lifestyle: “The decision of the Consistory says that prosphyrna is convicted of drunkenness and dysfunction in her position, but on what grounds she is convicted is not explained, and therefore it is not possible to judge the justice of such an incomplete decision” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 146. No. 9887). Resolution on the report of the regiment commander about permission for the regimental priest to perform all-night vigils: “The consistory is to announce to the Spassky priest to allow military ranks to perform all-night vigils in the evening at a decent time without full bells and ringing, but only with the emphasis on the middle bell seven times, since, according to the generally accepted procedure, all-night vigils with there is no evening in winter” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 176. No. 9953). November 5th. Resolution on the peasant’s petition for a second wedding, since the marriage was interrupted: “As the complainant about the promise of marriage allegedly given to her neither voluntarily, nor even at urgent request, appeared and did not provide evidence of the notification, then, in order not to further embarrass the bride and groom without reason, allow the marriage to take place” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 147. No. 9888). Resolution on the employee’s request for the issuance of a new metric certificate to replace the one covered in ink: “In order not to embarrass the applicant without an important reason, make a decision on the issuance of a new certificate” (Resolutions. Resolution on the consistory decision: to make a reprimand to the Kolomna Spiritual Board for the second refusal to provide the district court with certificates of birth records about an abandoned baby: “To make the Spiritual Board understand that his act involves disobedience to the decree, with the added indecency that it announced this disobedience in front of an outside public place: why, if he will allow himself to do this in the future, then those who signed such a determination must be put on trial for disobedience to the authorities who gave the decree in the name of His Imperial Majesty” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 148. No. 9891). Resolution at the consistory decision on approving the opinion of the Volokolamsk Spiritual Board on the collection of money: “The priest and the church warden differentiate the price of bricks placed in cages and set from those placed in rows and not set. And the spiritual Board puts both varieties at the same price. Therefore, you need to take from the priest and churchwarden an explanation of why they distinguish between these varieties and on what basis they determined the price of the other” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 148. No. 9892). Resolution on the consistory decision to close the case of the drunken behavior of the sexton (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 149. No. 9893). Resolution on the petition of parishioners to remove from the church a priest leading a drunken lifestyle: “Since unfavorable information about the priest similar to that contained in this petition reached me before and, consequently, the gentlemen of the landowners were quite patient with his shortcomings; since their present testimony about him deserves full confidence, especially since the priest was previously convicted of drunkenness and beating to the point of bleeding and was suspected of damaging income and expenditure books, then... the priest is removed from this place with the prohibition of priestly service. The parishioners are allowed to elect a worthy one” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 149. No. 9894). Resolution on the consistory journal for September 1843 about presence meetings: “When requesting and examining these journals, it turned out that there were six of them during the month, therefore, for the other days of the month there is no information about when there was presence, who arrived and left when and how many protocols were signed, what information the statute of the Consistory prescribed to be shown in the journals to monitor the correctness, of course, not for six days, but for all presence days in the month.” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 150. No. 9895). Letter from E.V. Novosiltseva: “We are poor people. Repeatedly and often we remember our failures and again we stumble in the same places. Muravyov: “Did you receive my letter about the burial? - Here is another sad news, about the unburied. Shelashnikov’s brother visited me and told me that he, wounded in battle, fell into the hands of the enemy. Now we are thinking about how to look for him in captivity, or for his body. “Return, O Lord, the captivity of Zion, or grant a crown to the martyr!” (Letters. 1869. P. 128. No. 92). November 15. Resolution on the presentation of a report on the review of the Kaluga Theological Seminary: “What kind of oratory is taught in the literature department to compose? Is it really Roman judicial or political? The oratorical speeches we use are academic and sermons. A mentor, unswervingly looking at the goal of the school, teaching how to compose an oratorical speech, already has sermons in mind and for essays gives either a text or a subject of moral content. An essay on subjects of moral content in the middle section could serve as preparation for writing sermons” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 164. No. 9928). November 19. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “We completed the journey safely. Resolution on a parishioner’s petition to restore the interior decoration of the church: “As a drawing of the new iconostasis is not attached, and therefore one cannot judge its decency: then order the local priest to inform... whether his old icons or new ones will go to the new iconostasis; and whether there are new ones, then what is supposed to be done with the old ones, and whether there are ancient ones among them” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 150. No. 9898). Resolution on the priest’s petition for permission to serve in the priesthood, which was prohibited due to a seizure that happened to him during the service: “By his own admission, the priest only a few days later came to his senses from a seizure that suddenly befell him at the altar in his vestments during a proskomedia. As a precaution against such a disastrous and offensive case for the shrine, it is impossible to allow him to serve as a priest without a satisfactory test. The complaint he expresses about the fact that he was not allowed to die is a feeling so incompatible with the faith of the clergyman that it also prevents him from being allowed to serve in the priesthood until he humbles himself before the fate of God and repents. Therefore, he is advised to admit his sin of impatience and ask God for forgiveness, and with forgiveness, relief from sorrowful circumstances” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 151. No. 9899). Resolution regarding the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, on the approval of projects for the construction of a staircase in the building of the Moscow Theological Seminary: “The Committee is recommended to carefully coordinate any of its proposals with existing legislation and not leave it to write out the laws relating to cases” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 173. No. 9947). Attitude to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N.A. Protasov, about the plan of the Annunciation Church of the Chudov Monastery: “This church, as you can see on the plan, is one building with the Church of St. Alexis the Metropolitan. In the middle wall between both churches, an arch open to both churches, there is a place on which the relics of St. Alexis rest. The Church of the Annunciation, which is in question, can be brought to the memory of the Sovereign Emperor by the fact that His Majesty deigned to listen to the Divine Liturgy there on the 6th day of December 1837, because the iconostasis in Alekseevskaya was then being rebuilt” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 176. No. 9954). November 22. Report to the Holy Synod on the collection of donations in favor of the Antioch Church (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 178. No. 9955). Relation to Metropolitan Neophytos of Illiopolis: “The highest approved definition of the Holy Synod... by the way, it is prescribed... that the bishop appointed by the Patriarch of Antioch should not deal with the collection of alms, out of indecency, but entrust it to the lower clergy who may be appointed by the Patriarch, only no more than two” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 177. No. 9954). Letter to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N. A. Protasov, about the book he received to collect donations in favor of the Antioch Patriarchate (Opinions. 1905. pp. 106–107). Letter to A.N. Muravyov: “I didn’t want to tell you about a new adventure in my office with the collected book of the Right Reverend Iliopolsky. But in St. Petersburg they began a correspondence about this with the Postal Director, while earlier I had appointed a study about this, according to foresight. The point is simple: the book was received while I was leaving for the diocese, then they didn’t have time to show it to me, or better yet, a bale that they didn’t know what contained, then they forgot. But I don’t exactly say: “we didn’t have time, we forgot.” Because my office staff consists of one person. We are trying to compensate the Reverend for the loss of part of his time. I celebrated the day of St. Nikon in the Lavra and returned to Moscow. They don’t let me continue” (Letters. 1869. pp. 129–130. no. 93). November 23. Letter from E. V. Novosiltseva: “Do not judge others who stand or fall for their Lord, but recognize and condemn your weakness and lack of patience: and may the Lord send peace and silence into our souls” (Letters. 1911. P. 222). November 24. Letter to A. N. Muravyov: “May the blessing of the Saints and Wonderworkers of Moscow remain with you, beloved in the Lord, And[rei] Nik[olaevich]. Their icon, forwarded to you, was placed on the holy relics of each of them” (Letters. 1869. P. 130. No. 94). November 26. Resolution on a consistory certificate on a priest’s request to temporarily replace a sick priest with an elderly one: “Allow an elderly priest to perform the Divine Liturgy in the Nativity Monastery instead of a sick priest, under the supervision of a local senior priest, pending discretion” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 152. No. 9900). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “The remnants of the road cold recur every time I leave the house. Now my left ear and the left side of my throat hurt” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 309. No. 397). November 27. Resolution on the dean’s request for permission to add warm aisles to the church: “The plan shows that only a small part of the walls will remain from the old building; and therefore reconstruction will probably be more expensive than a new building; Meanwhile, it will be made up of scraps. Wouldn’t it be better to leave the cold church as is, and build a warm one separately?” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 152. No. 9902). November 29. Resolution on the request of a soldier's wife for permission to be baptized, since she does not know whether she was baptized: “The named priest should delve more thoroughly into the testimony of the petitioner and, Is there any reason not to trust, to perform holy baptism over her according to the church rule? with a protective saying: if you have not been baptized, eat” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 152. No. 9901). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “At the same time, I am sending you a letter that I received today and with which I don’t really understand what to do. There is no doubt about believing the story; but it is hard to ignore the invocation of the name of God and the oath. It seems to me, out of respect for the latter, it is necessary to send everything required and return the receipt at the same time. And if we take into account both the first and second thoughts, then we need to send half and return the receipt. If you approve of both ideas, take the money from the treasurer and send it. With the return of the receipt to the address indicated in the letter. Consult with prudence, and not with my stinginess” (Letters to St. Anthony. pp. 309–310. No. 398). November 30. Drawing up instructions for spiritual exhorters: “For all exhorters, the following should be prescribed as instruction and warning: a) Priestly exhortation during an investigation or trial is an action important in essence and consequences in terms of civil, moral and religious. A judicious and diligent exhorter, bringing the guilty person to confession, facilitates the operation of justice, cleanses the soul of the guilty person and encourages correction, and protects the innocent involved in the case 196 . In such an action there can be a lot of merit, a lot of consolation, a lot of reward” (DC. 1879. Part 2. No. 8. P. 461–462). Resolution on the dean’s report on the performance of their duties by the priests serving as exhorters in the Meshchansky unit: “Especially if, due to negligence or a complete omission of the exhortation, a false oath will be given and unscrupulous testimony will be made against the oath: part of the blame for this grave crime will fall on the conscience of the unworthy exhorter” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 153–154. No. 9903). Resolution on the archpriest’s note about his release from some duties: “The archpriest needs relief from some of the tasks entrusted to him, in order to more conveniently and easily fulfill the assignment given to him again, which requires considerable work” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 174. No. 9948). December 3. Letter to mother: “I was also glad that you were writing with your own hand. And I don’t know what to tell you about this. I wouldn't want you to work. But on the other hand, I know that the strength in the members is better maintained and increased when they are used. If you decide to write again yourself: do not write much. I spent several days and December 1 in my cell, suffering a lot due to many previous colds: especially from a sore throat, I could not speak without difficulty. Now everything is almost gone” (Letters. 1882. P. 371. No. 434). December 5th. Attitude to the Chief Prosecutor of the Holy Synod, Count N.A. Protasov: “At the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, icon painting has been carried out in a small form for a long time through willing and able servants of the Lavra. His character was previously inclined more towards painting. But it is desirable to bring it closer to ancient examples. In order to give this guide selected ancient examples of icon painting, it turned out to be necessary to establish a small lithography at the Lavra to take accurate photographs of the ancient icons available in the churches and sacristy of the Lavra” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 179. No. 9956). December 6. Liturgy service in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in the Widow's House on the name day of Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich and Grand Duke Nikolai Alexandrovich (MV. 1843. No. 147. That is why, thank God, we often have acts and institutions of love for mankind” (Works. Vol. 4, p. 277). • Resolution on the report of errors in the economic reports of the Zvenigorod Theological School for 1842: “The disorder in the note and the issuance of amounts occurred especially due to the illness of the late Overseer. It is necessary that in this case something should be done to ensure order and school property. This guarantee lies in the fact that, as soon as the first official is unable to maintain order, the senior official, in accordance with the duty of the general oath, is obliged to immediately use all possible means to maintain order” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 165. No. 9929). December 7th. Letter to the governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Thank you for your help in resolving the request for the fear of the name of God. I hope that you have already done so. The described circumstances require urgent help. Now I find out that what I expressed concern about to you is happening and what seemed like a dream to you. In Moscow they say that I sent two monks to Georgia to influence the supposedly fallen spirit of the army. These stories will reach far and can cause trouble. Pray to the Rev. to protect us from temptation” 197 (Letters to St. Anthony. pp. 310–311. No. 399). December 8th. Resolution on the examiner’s testimony about students of the Moscow Theological Seminary asking for a priestly place: “The student Afanasy Sokolov, having been forced to read the ninth hour, at the end of the psalms, said the threefold alleluia once, and not three times, and then it was clear that the trisagion and the following verses could not read in order and required the guidance of the novice. But even an attentive layman knows that on the clock the threefold alleluia is read three times, and ignorance of this shows inattention to the Divine Service. Therefore, refuse the student, and from the other petitioners the Right Reverend will choose the most worthy one” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 154. No. 9904). Resolution on the petition of a banned priest, who is in the position of sexton, to reduce and shorten his punishment: “The priest himself shows that the peasant accused him of excessively demanding income, and he, instead of performing a prayer service in his justification against the accusation of pretentiousness, even though nothing was given to him, on the contrary, did not serve, hypocritically and absurdly justifying himself with the saying: do not throw beads before pigs" (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 155. No. 9905). December 10. Resolution at the consistory certificate on the abbot’s request to ordain a monk as a hierodeacon: “The monk does not know that Christians are saved by faith in Christ, and he has not read the catechism. Announce to the abbot that church rules do not allow the appointment of a person as a clergyman who has no idea about even the rudiments of Christianity. Tell the monk to read the catechism and find out what he believes in” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 155. No. 9906). Letter from M. M. Tuchkova: “After Euphrosyne, the Holy Synod awarded you her inheritance. It’s easy to get money, but things are not so convenient. The consistory will probably ask you how to dispose of it. Meanwhile, I hear that caring for things was made easier by the thieves, who hardly left anything behind. Write what you think will be done” (Letters to Abbess Maria. P. 69. No. 52). Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “Thank you, Father Viceroy, for discussing our embassy to Georgia. It is fair that one must do what pleases God and that one cannot do everything that pleases people; but another is a matter of indispensable duty, another is a matter of will not due to duty. The first is determined by itself, about the second there is room to consider whether we are not going beyond our limits and have not given guilt to those seeking guilt unnecessarily” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 311. No. 400). December 15. Establishment of schools for daughters of clergy. Resolution on an extract from the consistory desk report register about a dismissed student of Bethany Seminary: “Pupils of the secondary department are allowed to seek a direct diaconal place before reaching 25 years of diaconal age only with full evidence of consistently honest behavior. But the information provided about the disciple Veniamin does not provide him with this advantage. Therefore, if he wishes to enter the clergy, he needs to first be tested in the clergy degree” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 156. No. 9908). Resolution on the petition of the prosphyrny for permission to transfer her daughters from the Kaluga to the Moscow diocese, and to allow her to seek a prosphyrnic place in Moscow or the district: “Although the position of the petitioner is worthy of compassion, there is no legal basis or convenience to accept her four daughters from the Kaluga diocese to the Moscow diocese, because the Moscow diocesan authorities are burdened with their poor diocese. The petitioner can look for a prosphora place in Moscow in accordance with the established procedure” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 156. No. 9909). Resolution on the monk’s request to transfer him back to the monastery from the desert, to which he was removed for one year: “He writes untruthfully that he was sent to David’s desert for one year. It was ordered to transfer him to David’s Hermitage completely and place him under special supervision for a year” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 157. No. 9910). Tuchkova: “Having read your letter again and seeing that you promise not to sew with gold, I find it useful to remind you that I did not demand this decisively, but only drew your attention to the inconveniences that may arise from the predominance of luxurious work. Sew in gold if it is necessary and useful to the monastery, but maintain simple necessary work and handicrafts and the readiness to turn from the elegant and magnificent to the simple and necessary when circumstances require it” (Letters to Abbess Maria. P. 70. No. 53). December 16. Resolution on the petition of a priestly widow to accept her and her daughters into the Moscow diocese: “There is no basis for admitting female persons into the diocese, and therefore this petition, as it is not based on any law, should be left unsatisfied” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 159. No. 9912). December 20. Resolution regarding the acting Moscow Governor-General on readiness to consecrate the house church at the transit castle: “For the consecration of the church, by agreement with the Prison Trustee Committee, next Thursday, the 23rd day of this December, is appointed, for which the appropriate orders are made” (Resolutions. Resolution on an extract from the consistory desk report register with a determination that the abbess divide the property remaining after the death of the nun among the sisters at her own discretion: “The decree mentions a silk cloak. Why does the Consistory order that it be given to nuns or novices?” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 159. No. 9913). Resolution at the consistory ruling on approving the opinion of the spiritual board on exempting the church from paying for sold candles: “Before the final decision on the matter, it is necessary to have information from the parishioners: do they believe that the candles actually arrived in their church for the holiday. Do they admit this, did they make offerings for the holiday on this subject, and do they believe that the former headman collected enough money to pay for the candles taken to the church for the holiday. If this cannot be made clear, then whether they would not agree to make payment with church money or money collected from them, so that the candle seller would not be left without fair payment, and if they would not agree, then why” (Resolutions. Protasov on the occasion of the Nativity of Christ: “With this common joy it is a pleasure to greet Your Excellency, I make it my duty, thinking about your hereditary and personal reverence for the sacrament of faith. I pray to the Lord that He may add His blessing to you both on the path of faith and on the path of your service, that it may remain pleasing to God and the most pious Sovereign, and beneficial to the good of the Holy Church and those who serve it” (Opinions. 1905. P. 107). December 23. Pronunciation of the Word upon the consecration of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Recoverer of the Lost, built at the castle of transit prisoners: “Why did the Church Council so solemnly appear among you and place the shrine of the Christian Church so close to you? Why is Church justice not as decisive and inexorable for you as civil justice, although the Church demands not only integrity in external relations, but also in internal holiness and therefore could judge the guilty more strictly? Why then, just as civil society expels you, the Church seems to be chasing you. One explanation for these surprises is Christian love” (Works. Vol. 4, p. 280). Resolution on an extract from the consistory desk report register presenting the dean’s report about the sexton, who can no longer continue serving due to illness: “They found from his appearance that he, Andreev, truly has a weakening of his voice and hearing. Who can understand this? Are voices and ears recognized by their appearance? Don’t those who examine have the ear to know whether the sexton’s voice is strong or weak? I demand the opinion of the Consistory on how to achieve a correct and legal inquiry” (Resolutions. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 160. No. 9915). December 24. Letter to A.N. Muravyov: “You graciously remembered my day adjacent to yours, and not only remembered, but also told me about it, to my consolation. Vol. 5. Part 1. P. 174. No. 9950). December 31st. Letter to the Governor of the Lavra, Archimandrite Anthony (Medvedev): “My cold allowed me to celebrate the holidays, and then it put me at home again, and I don’t know if I’m fit for anything tomorrow. I don’t want to undergo treatment, but meanwhile the pain in my teeth, ear and left side of my head makes it difficult to do and sleep. I need the medicine you prescribed: magnesia calcinata. Tell me where to get it. For I happened to notice that some things of this kind in our pharmacies are worse than in the English store” (Letters to St. Anthony. P. 313. No. 401). 1843 (no date). Pronunciation of the Word (“Conversation at the procession”): “In order to rejoice in the Lord, in order to celebrate the feast of God, it is necessary for a person to be in some proximity to God. God is always close to man, in His omnipresence; but man is not always close to God, in his limitations, inattention, absent-mindedness, in his occupation with earthly objects, in his inclinations and actions contrary to God. So, we must get our minds out of earthly thoughts and memories, our hearts out of worries and passions, our bodies out of work and deeds, in order to approach God without barriers or obstacles, to appear before Him and celebrate in His presence” (Works. Vol. 4, pp. 285–286). M. N. Muravyov (1796–1866), count, infantry general, brother of A. N. Muravyov. At the end of 1843, Shamil achieved success, establishing his dominance in Chechnya and Dagestan. On December 14 and 17, the army forced the highlanders to retreat. Taking this opportunity, Saint Philaret sent with the monks an image of St. Sergius as a blessing to the chief administrator of the Transcaucasian region, Infantry General A.I. Neigardt.
