Another place connected with the memory of the Holy Martyr was noted on Solovki. Hilarion (Troitsky)

On August 29, 2002, on the feast of the Translation of the Image of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands, a memorial cross was erected on Bolshoi Solovetsky Island on the site of a destroyed wooden chapel in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara. On the same day, the cross was consecrated by the Abbot of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky Stavropegic Monastery, Archimandrite Joseph. Built in the 19th century. The Varvara Chapel was located near the monastery sea pier in Dolgaya Guba (near the road to Rebalda). The dedication of the chapel was apparently related to its location. Saint Barbara was traditionally revered as the patroness of “walkers on the waters.” Solovetsky monks and pilgrims departing from Long Bay to the neighboring island. Anzer, they prayed in the chapel for a safe voyage. During the camp, the chapel and adjacent buildings were used for the needs of the forestry department. A large number of prisoners were kept here, among whom for some time was the Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky), Archbishop of Verei (1929). He acted as a forester and lived in the chapel building itself. Subsequently, it was dismantled for firewood, and the construction site was overgrown with forest (only the sod foundations have survived to this day). The installed cross, thus, marks not only the place of the destroyed shrine, but also another geographical point on Solovki, associated with the memory of St. Hilarion. The more famous point of residence of the ruler on the archipelago (along with the Filimonovskaya fishing ground) is the Jesus (Philippov) Hermitage, known since the 16th century. as a place of prayerful deeds of St. Philip, the future Metropolitan of Moscow, who accepted martyrdom during the years of the oprichnina (1569). During the camp period, scientific laboratories were located in the desert premises. Vladyka Hilarion was listed as their guard, and for several months he had the opportunity to lead a solitary life there and even receive visitors. One of the prisoners many years later recalled his visit to the desert: “And the short conversation with Hilarion was encouraging. This happens when you communicate with a person who is convinced, intelligent and courageous.” The church in honor of the “Life-Giving Spring” icon of the Mother of God, located in the Jesus Desert, has not survived. Several years ago, the brethren of the Solovetsky Monastery erected a memorial cross in its place. Another large worship was erected in the desert - by a remarkable coincidence - at the same time as the cross on the site of the Varvarinsky chapel, on August 29, 2002. The relics of Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky), Archbishop of Vereisky, are currently in the Moscow Sretensky Monastery.
