Part 2 Alphabetical index to the collection of opinions and reviews The second volume of the “collection of opinions and reviews” of Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, on educational and church-state issues” covers the time from March 20, 1819 to December 8, 1839. It included one hundred and thirteen articles relating to various aspects of church-state life and theological thought. All articles are arranged, as in the first volume, in chronological order, with the exception of two, from 1827, placed at the end of the volume, as an addition, solely because they were delivered to the editor at a time when the volume was nearing completion. “Almost all the articles” belong to the works of the ever-memorable saint according to the positions and titles he held during the specified period of time: the main schools of the board (until October 28, 1822), the imperial philanthropic society, the commission of theological schools, the Holy Synod and various temporary committees. The content of the articles is extremely varied. The great saint had to not only resolve issues that arose in the practice of spiritual administration, but also write entire treatises in defense of the Orthodox Church (Nos. 167–170) and even protocols on such matters that had no connection with the scope of his activities (No. 204). And yet, everything that came from the pen of the saint was imprinted with deep thoroughness and majestic calm and impartiality, characteristic of him alone. Predominant attention, in quantitative and qualitative terms, deserves those articles that were written by the Metropolitan for Spiritual Administration. In this regard, the pension charter for teachers of religious educational institutions (No. 159), the charter of care for the poor of the clergy (No. 162), the most obedient notes “on remedies for the lack of worthy priests” (No. 177) and “regarding the exclusion of important provisions from the most obedient report of the Synod by the State Council” (No. 201), correspondence with Prince A. N. Golitsyn on the matter of marriage adjutant wing A.P. Mansurov (No. 178, 180, 182, 183, 193) and opinion on the request of Adjutant General P.A. Kleinmichel on allowing him a second marriage (No. 200), a whole series of opinions and reviews on the schism (Nos. 198, 223, 224, 231, 232) and finally a series of comments on ways to improve the financial situation of the rural clergy (No. 188, 189, 236–239) will forever remain monuments to the unshakable zeal of the great saint to protect the inviolability of sacred rules and church deanery, as well as his wise care for the welfare of the church and state and for the true needs and requirements of the clergy and spiritual education. There is no doubt that this volume will be read with deep attention not only by readers of Metropolitan Philaret of blessed memory, but also by all educated people who value the interests of Orthodoxy and the Russian Church.
