Ps.116:1–2. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord, all you nations, praise Him, all you people, for His mercy toward us is unshakable, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Prophecy about the Christian Church It is obvious to everyone that these words constitute a prophecy about the Church of believers and a prediction about a sermon that will embrace the entire universe. The psalm calls not one, not two or three nations only, but the whole earth and sea. And this was justified when the coming of Christ dawned. Then the prophet presents the reason for salvation, explaining that they were saved not for their own good deeds, not for their lives and exploits, but solely because of God’s love for mankind. “Unshakable,” he says, “His mercy is toward us,” i.e. became solid, strong, harder than stone. Truly, it increases more and more every day. “And the truth of the Lord endures forever,” because then the truth especially shone forth. He said this because the old covenant was a type and a shadow. The Evangelist also expresses this when he says: “The law was given through Moses; But grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). The psalms in the text are translated by P.
