Commentary on 2 Timothy

“Commentary on 2 Timothy” (4 chapters) is one of the voluminous Commentaries on the 14 letters of the Apostle Paul, written by Bl. Theodoret of Cyrus later than all his other comments. In the preface, Bl. Theodoret reveals the purpose of the apostolic letter. The Apostle Paul encourages the Apostle Timothy “to perform exploits for piety,” calls on him to “courageously endure dangers for the faith,” and indicates rewards for exploits. In this interpretation, the main view of the blessed one sounds. Theodoret on the Holy Scriptures: “All Scripture is inspired by God and useful (2 Tim. 3:16) ... because God’s grace was spoken through the prophets and apostles” (chapter 3). He emphasizes the need for constant study of the Holy Scriptures and its application to life. Blzh. Theodoret warns against false teachings and calls for vigilance, emphasizing that true faith requires both personal devotion to God and active service in the Church. The divine Apostle wrote the second epistle to the blessed Timothy from Rome, being already at the very end of his life, and he himself allowed this to be seen, writing like this: “For I am already eaten, and the time of my departure has come” (2 Tim. 4:6). He wrote to him, encouraging him to perform exploits for piety and exhorting him to bravely endure dangers for his faith, but also pointed out the rewards for his exploits; predicted about some who accept the outward appearance of piety, but choose a life alien to the promise.
