1 Corinthians 16:1. When collecting for the saints, do as I decreed in the churches of Galatia. “As for the alms that you gave to the saints, as you did to the churches of Galatia, do the same.” The Apostle calls the collection of money alms. Not without intention he mentioned the Galatians, but making it clear that he advised them to do the same. 1 Corinthians 16:2. On the first day of the week, let each of you put aside and save as much as his fortune allows, so as not to have to make preparations when I come. “Let each one keep you for himself from the Sabbaths, if he succeeds.” The Apostle leaves the amount of alms to one's disposition, teaching that God helps souls who choose the best. For he expressed this with the words: “if anything goes well.” The day of the Lord, distinguished by the resurrection, also corresponds to the work. “But when I don’t always come, then there are meetings.” 1 Corinthians 16:3. When I come, those whom you choose, I will send with letters to bring your alms to Jerusalem. 1 Corinthians 16:4. And if it is decent for me to go, then they will go with me. “When I come, even if you tempt them, I will send with these messages to carry your grace to Jerusalem. If it is worthy for me to go, they will go with me.” For it is indecent to collect money in my presence. I must send what I have collected to the saints with those “if you tempt them.” And if I see that the alms are generous, then I myself will take part in this service. He didn’t say, “I’ll carry it myself,” but he said, “They’ll go with me.” For what he advises to others, he himself does first, and “he is without offense in Jew and Greek and in the church of God” (1 Cor. 10:32). He also appoints the time of his arrival to the Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 16:5. I will come to you when I have passed through Macedonia; for I am going through Macedonia. “I will come to you when I pass through Macedonia.” And so that the Corinthians would not be offended by the fact that the Macedonians were preferred, the Apostle added: “I am passing through Macedonia.” 1 Corinthians 16:6. Perhaps I’ll live with you, or spend the winter, so that you can accompany me wherever I go. 1 Corinthians 16:7. For I do not want to see you now in passing, but I hope to stay with you for some time, if the Lord allows. “If it happens to me, I’ll stay with you, or I’ll winter, and you’ll see me off, or if I go. I don’t want to see you now in passing: I hope for some time to remain with you, if the Lord commands.” The apostle does not intend to do anything without God’s command, but he wants God’s right hand to rule over him. Meanwhile, he comforted the Corinthians sufficiently with what he had said, promising to stay with them for some time. He lets you know why he won’t come soon. 1 Corinthians 16:8. I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost. 1 Corinthians 16:9. For a great and wide door is open to me, and there are many adversaries. “I will remain in Ephesus until Penticostia”: “for the door was opened for me, great and hasty, and against the resistance of many.” For many begin to preach, but many oppose and try to serve as an obstacle to the salvation of the first. 1 Corinthians 16:10. If Timothy comes to you, see that he is safe with you; for he is doing the Lord’s work, just as I do. “If Timothy comes, be careful that you may have no fear,” that is, accept him, serve him, so that he will not experience any grief. “He does the Lord’s work, just as I do.” Enough evidence to motivate even a lazy person to provide services to a student. 1 Corinthians 16:11. Therefore, let no one despise him, but see him off in peace, so that he may come to me, for I am waiting for him with the brethren. “Yes, no one will humiliate him.” Do not look at the youth of age, but take into account the apostolic works in it. “Send him off in peace. Let him come to me: I’m waiting for him with his brothers.” And the Apostle again added this with the intention of inducing the Corinthians to provide services to the disciple, as if saying: he will come to me and inform me of all your affairs. 1 Corinthians 16:12. And as for brother Apollos, I asked him very much that he and his brothers would go to you; but he did not want to go now, but will come when it is convenient for him. “About brother Apollos: I prayed for him much, that he might come to you with his brethren: and without his will, let him come now.” And Apollos was respected and close to the Corinthians. Why does the Apostle calm them down, informing them that he advised Apollos to go to them. He did not add that Apollos himself refused, but placed everything on God’s Providence. “It will come when it is abolished.” I consoled him with this hope. 1 Corinthians 16:13. Stay awake, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:14. Let everything be done with love. “Watch, stand firm in the faith: take courage, be strong”: “let all love be given to you.” He said: “Watch,” because of the deceivers, and also: “Stand, take courage, be strong,” because of obvious enemies, because the pious were persecuted by the wicked. This: “Let all love be with you” - it was said to those who caused divisions in the body of the Church, gave place to the passion of covetousness, ate things sacrificed to idols and despised those who were tempted. 1 Corinthians 16:15. I ask you, brethren (you know the family of Stephen, that they are the firstfruits of Achaia and that they dedicated themselves to serving the saints). 1 Corinthians 16:16. Be respectful to them and to everyone who contributes and works. “I pray you, brethren: inform the house of the Stephanines and Fortunates, as Achaia is the firstfruits of Christ, and teach yourself in the service of the saints: that you also obey such, and everyone who helps and labors.” The Apostle wrote down two praises: that they were the first to receive the saving sermon and that, having opened the house to the saints, they render them every service, and therefore he gives the order that they and those who deign to do the same should enjoy every honor. 1 Corinthians 16:17. I am glad about the arrival of Stefan, Fortunatus and Achaic: they made up for your absence for me. 1 Corinthians 16:18. For they calmed my spirit and yours. The Corinthians sent a letter with them and asked the Apostle about those who were married. The Apostle sent this message with them. For it was not Blessed Timothy, as some have supposed, who served to deliver the Scriptures. Although he was sent to them, he probably fulfilled another need in another city and then arrived to them. This thought is suggested by what is written about him, for it is said: “If Timothy comes, take heed that you may have no fear.” And the Apostle approves of these with special care, so that the Corinthians do not cause them grief, on suspicion that they were the accusers of the Corinthians. 1 Corinthians 16:19. The churches of Asia greet you; Aquila and Priscilla and their home church greet you earnestly in the Lord. “You kiss the churches of Asia.” And the Apostle added this for the benefit of the Corinthians, showing the spread of the sermon. “You kiss Aquila and Priscilla a lot in the Lord, with their church at home.” The divine Apostle lived with them: “byahu bo” and they were “the makers of tabernacles by cunning” (Acts 18:3). And they, out of great virtue, made the house a church, intending to do the one thing that was appropriate for the church. 1 Corinthians 16:20. All the brothers greet you. Greet each other with a holy kiss. “All of you brothers kiss you. Kiss each other with the holy kiss." The Apostle drove out discord and bound them together with a holy kiss. 1 Corinthians 16:21. Whoever does not love the Lord Jesus Christ is anathema, maran-afa. 3 “If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be cursed.” Let him who does not have ardent love for the Lord Christ be a stranger to the common body of the Church. And this Apostle instilled fear in those who were already accused. And just as those who love the body do not want to have anyone as an accomplice in love, so the divine Apostle wants all people to be lovers with him, and whoever is not like that cuts them off from the Church. "Maran afa". This is not a Hebrew word, as some thought, but a Syrian word. Translated, it means: The Lord has come. The apostle used it, humbling the majesty of the Corinthians, who were proud of the gift of speech, and teaching that what is needed is not learning, but faith. 1 Corinthians 16:23. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is with you. 1 Corinthians 16:24. And my love is with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you”: “and my love is with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen." The apostle, according to custom, wished the Corinthians the grace of the Lord Jesus, but he did not simply mention his love, but letting them know that, driven by love for them, he used harsher words, imitating his fatherly love and desiring their salvation. And we will benefit from this and love the Lord who loved us, so that the apostolic oath does not fall on us, but so that we may be worthy of the apostolic canopy in Christ Jesus our Lord. With him is honor and splendor to the Father with the All-Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever! Amen.
