"Song of Degrees". The prophetic word teaches humility and presents onago lovers as praying and constantly asking God. Ps.130:1. God! My heart was not lifted up and my eyes were not lifted up, and I did not enter into what is great and beyond my reach. “Lord, my heart is not lifted up.” The height of the heart harms not only the wicked, but also the Saints. And the story of Chronicles about the pious king Hezekiah shows that “humble yourself from the height of your heart” (2 Chron. 32:26). Therefore, the Lord inspires His sacred disciples, saying: “Everyone who humbles himself will be exalted, and he who is exalted will humble himself” (Luke 18:14). “Lower are my eyes lifted up.” Proud people tend to raise their eyebrows, puff out their cheeks and despise everyone. And those free from this passion, not as an ignorant person, reveal this Judge, but as a leader they call for testimony. “We walk lower than the great ones.” Symmachus translated: in greatness, and Aquila: in splendor. “Lower in the marvelous than me.” And Symmachus translated: lower in exceeding me, that is, I knew my limits, and did not undertake anything that exceeded my dignity. Ps.130:2. Have I not humbled and calmed my soul, like a child weaned from its mother’s breast? my soul was within me like a weaned child. “Even though I did not humble myself, but lifted up my soul, like what was given to my mother, so reward my soul.” And Symmachus translated: if I did not equate and liken my soul to a baby weaned from his mother’s breast, let my soul be rewarded in this way, that is, if I was not afraid of You like a baby just weaned from the nipples and afraid of its mother, if I was not submissive to You, but had an exalted mind, then I ask you to reward me for this. Ps.130:3. Let Israel trust in the Lord now and forever. “Let Israel trust in the Lord from now on and forever.” The prophetic word shows why the mention of good works is made. For, not exalting himself, he portrays his virtue, but in order to incite others to jealousy.
