"Song of Degrees". Having shown in the previous psalm how many benefits trust in God brings, the Prophet here pleases those who, with hope, have the fear of God, which contributes to the acquisition of virtue. Those who believe in God also need to live according to God, because this is the perfect charter of piety. Ps.127:1. Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord and walks in His ways! “Blessed are all who fear the Lord.” The prophetic word pleases not from the race of Abraham, or from the seed of Israel, which came, but adorned with the fear of God. Blessed Peter also says this in Acts: “I understand the truth, that God does not look at personalities, but fear Him in every language and do what is right, He is acceptable” (Acts 10:34-35). The prophetic word also shows the distinctive feature of the fear of God; for it adds: “They who walk in His ways,” because “not everyone will say to Me: Lord, Lord, enter into the kingdom of heaven: but do the will of My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Therefore, it is common for those who fear the Lord not to walk outside the ways of God, but to always march along them. Ps.127:2. You will eat from the labor of your hands: blessed are you, and good to you! “Bear the labors of your fruits.” And Symmachus translated: devouring the labor of your hands. From this it is clear that the seventy fruits were not called those obtained by hands, but by the hands themselves. The Prophet says: you will reap the fruits of the good deeds you have sown. The divine Apostle also said this: “Whoever sows with poverty, he will also reap with poverty; and he who sows with blessings will also reap with blessings” (2 Cor. 9:6). “Blessed are you, and good will come to you.” Not only in words will you arouse envy and become famous, but in reality you will be prosperous. Ps.127:3. Your wife is like a fruitful vine in your house; Your sons are like olive branches around your table. “Your wife is like a fruitful vine in the lands of your home.” since at that time it was recognized as prosperity; that prophetic word promises them the fertility of their wives, so that they will become like flowering vines laden with grapes. Ps.127:4. Thus will the man who fears the Lord be blessed! “Thy sons, like new olive trees are around your table.” And in the fifty-first psalm the Prophet compared the righteous man to an olive tree; for he said: “I am like an olive tree that is fruitful in the house of God” (Psalm 51:10). And here he likened the sons of those who fear the Lord to new olive trees; because they bring water of piety and seasonable fruit, and their leaf does not fall off, as it is said about the man blessed in the first psalm. Ps.127:5. The Lord will bless you from Zion, and you will see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. “Behold, man will be blessed; fear the Lord”; because God is the Judge not of gender, but of morals. Thus he gave crowns to Job, who descended from Esau; Thus he instructed Abimelech, the eunuch, Cornelius and all the pagans to the truth. Ps.127:6. You will see your sons' sons. Peace on Israel! “The Lord bless you from Zion.” This is in accordance with the prevailing opinion at that time. For they thought that God lived in Zion. “And thou shalt see good Jerusalem all the days of thy life.” For those who returned from Babylon desired to see this, seeing the desolation of the city. “And the sons of your sons will see.” It was considered a great blessing to reach a ripe old age and see one's filial children. Therefore, the Prophet defines blessings that agree with the concepts. And that this is not the purpose of the Prophet for acquiring goods, Blessed Isaiah teaches: “Let not the wretch say, for I am a dry tree. This is what the Lord says: the little ones will keep My Sabbaths, and they will choose what I want, I will give them in My house, and in My fence there is a name and a good name, better than sons and daughters” (Is. 56:3-5).
