"Psalm to David." In some lists it also reads: “on the fourth Saturday”; but neither in the Hebrew, nor in other interpreters, nor in the Seventy did we find this addition. The content of the psalm is as follows: King Josiah destroyed all the altars of idols to the ground, killed the priests of idols, and taught the people their former piety - and he did not only care about the sound understanding of dogmas, but took care of progress in virtue, judging justice, rewarding righteousness, helping the offended, punishing those who offended, caring for the benefit of citizens. Having foreseen this from afar, blessed David wrote this psalm, depicting in it the virtue of Josiah and presenting to all people the traits of perfection. Ps.100:1. I will sing mercy and judgment; To you, Lord, I will sing. “I will sing to You of mercy and judgment, Lord.” Since the wonderful Josiah was merciful to the offended and condemned those who did offense, the Prophet called the story about this a praise of mercy and judgment. Ps.100:2. I will meditate on the blameless path: “When will you come to me?” I will walk in integrity of my heart in the midst of my house. “I sing and understand in the way blameless.” And Symmachus translated this: I will chant, mentally imagine the immaculate path; - that blameless and godly path, which I saw by the grace of the Spirit, I will now depict with sweet singing. “When will you come to me?” For this wonderful man acquired purity to such an extent that he boldly cried out to God: “When will you come to me?” that is, I have prepared for You a splendid royal palace, I long for Your coming, fulfill my desire. “I walked in the midst of my house in gentleness of heart.” I spent my life in simplicity; did not resort to double-mindedness, and showed himself to no one else outside the house, doing the opposite of that in the house, but the hidden was similar to the visible. Ps.100:3. I will not place indecent things before my eyes; I hate criminal deeds: they will not stick to me. “Do not offer before my eyes a thing that is unlawful.” Not only did he abhor lawless deeds, but he also removed the thought of them from himself, first of all arranging and putting his thoughts in order. “Those who commit crimes will hate.” He turned away from those who neglected the divine statutes. Ps.100:4. A corrupt heart will be removed from me; I will not know evil. “Do not let me have an obstinate heart.” Those who respect truthfulness were close to me, but I kept those who preferred the opposite and did not want to have right thoughts away from my meetings. “I have not known the evil one who turns away from Me.” If one of those close to me, led by deceit, wanted to distance himself from me, I did not consider such excommunication to be excommunication. The one who indulged in vice seemed worthy of such extreme contempt. Ps.100:5. He who secretly slanderes his neighbor I will drive out; I will not tolerate someone who is proud in his eyes and arrogant in his heart. “Whoever slanders his sincere secret, I will drive him out.” I did not accept accusations made in secret, and I drove away those who attempted to do so. “With a proud eye and an unsatisfied heart, I do not eat this.” I did not make my dining companions behave proudly. Ps.100:6. My eyes are on the faithful of the earth, so that they may remain with me; He who walks in the way of integrity will serve me. “My eyes are on the faithful lands, plant them with me.” My accomplices in the meetings and in the council were those who were adorned with faith and highly revered the divine. “Walk in the path blameless, as you serve me.” Not only about my friends and advisers, but also about those who served me, I took great care; because he used ministers who cared about virtue and were alien to vice. Ps.100:7. No one who acts deceitfully will live in my house; he who speaks a lie will not remain before my eyes. “Do not live in the midst of my house and create pride.” I didn’t like having people around who looked at others with contempt. “Speak unrighteously, you will not be corrected before my eyes.” And if someone advised me unjustly, or asked me unjustly; then he left me empty-handed. Ps.100:8. From early morning I will destroy all the wicked of the earth, in order to uproot from the city of the Lord all the workers of iniquity. “In the morning we slaughtered all the sinners of the earth, who consumed all the workers of iniquity from the city of the Lord.” We know this clearly from history; because Josiah put to death all the wicked priests, and cleansed the holy city.
