It would be better if you understood with your mind with some condescension what I (modestly) express with some unreason, that is, in praise of myself; but it is also good that you listen to me (2 Cor. 11:1). After all, I speak in the name of Him who spoke in the flesh, confirming His preaching with miracles, and (in the name of) His Sacraments. Thus I approved and in holy truth, having decided to present himself at the last day before Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:3. Just as Satan was variously transformed into an angel of light, at the time when he said to our Lord on the wing (of the church): “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written: His angels gave commandments concerning you” (Matt. 4:5–6, Luke 4:9–10, Ps. 90:11–12), - so he transforms his servants in various ways as when they are found to be neither of the Twelve nor of the Seventy-two Apostles, 2 Corinthians 11:16. I say again that is, I boast. But since you have not yet heard this from me, then Let no one consider me... reckless, if you consider me reckless because I did not refrain from praising. So, since everything that we did not do to you, they do to you for the sake of your glory, we turned out to be almost powerless in such matters in order to protect you from this. Since Saint Paul found a reason to speak against these very apostles, who were Jews, he also speaks about those who boldly boasted in the name of Abraham. 2 Corinthians 11:21. What anyone dares to boast about is foolish and I say, I also dare. 2 Corinthians 11:22. If the Jews... they [are] – and I; if sons of Jacob, (that is) Israel and I are named by him; this is Abraham and they (are) - and I. 2 Corinthians 11:23. If the servants... they [are] the essence of Christ, I would say recklessly, that is, I will say what I have in me: In what way am I more than they, if not in labors, and in bonds, and in scourgings, and in death often? 2 Corinthians 11:24. From the Jews, I say, five times I received forty... minus one... blows 36. According to the Synodal translation (Russian): “I caused costs to other churches, receiving support from them to serve you.” “According to the commandment of the Lord”, “according to the Lord”; Vulg. and some al.: Deum - “according to God,” “according to God.” According to the Synodal translation (Russian): “As many boast in the flesh, so will I boast.” The rabbis reduced the indicated (Deut. 25:3) number of strokes (40) by one, either so as not to exceed the legal number in case of a counting error, or for other reasons. This reading and interpretation corresponds to the Syriac, that is: in the meaning of “besides everything else” (caetera, saperabundanter, plus, insuper), and also: in the meaning of “gathering”, “crowd”, “rebellion”, “rebellion” (coetus, congregatio, turba), although in the Syriac: “besides other (everything) and the rebellion that is against (against) me daily”, more accurately corresponds to the Greek than the periphrasis of the saint Ephraim. On the contrary, Vulg. read: praeter ilia, quae extrinsecus (slav.: except external) sunt, instantia (ἐπίστασίς - “insistence”, “effort”; slav.: attack – mea (read: as one, but slav, omits) quotidiana. Goth.: sine his post hoc labor meus sempiternus; Ethiopian: praeter haec alia multa fuerunt, quae contigerunt mihi quotidie; Arabic: absque molestiis, quae sunt praeter hasce commemoratas, etiam congregies in me; Italian: Concursus and incursus in me.
