He begins to prove that the passage of the Jews across the sea and the events in the desert were foreshadowed by the Mysteries of our Lord. 1 Corinthians 10:1. They were called spiritual because of the manna that came down from above (from Heaven). So were the waters that flowed out of that rock again and miraculously. And he called Christ that Rock, for, like a rock, the side of our Lord was pierced by the blow of a spear, and Blood and water flowed out of it (John 19:34); Blood is for cleansing and drinking for all nations. But all this was done to them not because God’s favor rested on their multitude, for at the time when these transformative events took place, they (the Jews) 1 Corinthians 10:5. were amazed – in the desert itself (Num. 14:29, 26:64–65). But (God did this) so that their very defeat would serve as an image and example for us: 1 Corinthians 10:6. lest... we should become lustpers of evil, just as they were (Num. 11:4, Exod. 32:6). 1 Corinthians 10:8. All this figuratively happened to them, but it is written: it was for our admonition. 1 Corinthians 10:12. So who dreamily thinks he stands firm, let him beware of sin, 1 Corinthians 10:13. But God is faithful, who will not send you temptations beyond what you can bear, that is, it will not endure temptation beyond our weakness; so... you can move it. After giving these commands, he proceeds to the prudent reprimand and accusation of those who, with their fathers and brothers, went to festivals in the houses of the pagans. 1 Corinthians 10:14. Flee, he says, idolatry, designating the place where demons were revered, so that when you come there, you do not somehow become accomplices of the demons revered there. 1 Corinthians 10:15. Judge for yourself... what I say. After all, just as through the one Body that we receive, we all become one body, so through the one food that you eat there you will become one (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Along with the spiritual example I gave you, I give you another example – a physical one. 1 Corinthians 10:18. Look at Israel... carnal [according to the flesh]: after all, those who eat the sacrifices are partakers... of the altar. 1 Corinthians 10:19. Therefore, I exhort you to avoid them, since your communication with demons removes you from communication with our Lord: for 1 Corinthians 10:21. You cannot... drink the cup of the Lord... and the cup of demons; neither shall they eat at the table of the Lord nor at the table of the devil. Or do you want to make Him jealous by this? 1 Corinthians 10:22. Are... stronger... Him... we [are], so he won’t exact this from us? And although “everything” 25 is possible for the sake of freedom, whatever is possible is useful to our neighbors. We should not only seek our own benefit, but also those of our neighbors (1 Cor. 10:24). 1 Corinthians 10:25. Eat everything that is sold at the auction, just do not approach the altar of demons. For the sake of “conscience,” do not ask about what you find on the market - I mean the conscience of those asking, not those asking. 1 Corinthians 10:27. If one of the unbelievers ... invites you to dinner and you want to go, then eat everything that is offered to you. – because of hunger, – without asking anything for the sake of “conscience”, so as not to weaken it. 1 Corinthians 10:28. But if anyone says: This is a sacred sacrifice, then do not eat for the sake of the one who declared... For the earth is the Lord's. [and what fills it] 26. And although he does not allow you to eat here, he does not forbid you in another place. whether it will be weak or whether it will be strong. 1 Corinthians 10:29. Why... should my freedom... be judged by someone else's conscience? - that is, if they are tempted, will I also become like them? 1 Corinthians 10:30. If I take food with thanksgiving, then why am I subjected to blasphemy for the fact that I give thanks? Perhaps the false apostles blasphemed him because he preached and did not take anything from anyone (for this), and thus blocked the entrance for the false apostles, who fixed their eyes only on receiving (remuneration for preaching). That is a successful ending.
