(Rom.6:1) “What shall we say? ...Shall we remain more often in this very sin,” as our enemies mock us, “so that... grace... may increase.” (Rom.6:2) “Let it not be, for we who have died... have sinned” through the cleansing of baptism, “how... will we be able to live in it any longer?” (Rom.6:3) “Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” And we died with our lives for the world, just as he who was separated from his body died for temporary life. (Rom. 6:4) “Therefore, since we suffered “with Him through baptism, just as He rose from the dead through the glory of His Father, so may we also walk in newness and life” after the quickening that comes from baptism itself. (Rom. 6:5) “For if we became akin, that is, joined together,” to Him, obviously, not by death, but by baptism, since this very thing is “the likeness of His death,” then in the same way we will “resurrect Him” and we will live when we flourish, like branches along the streams of water, from baptism itself, since through it we have become akin to Him. (Rom.6:6) “Know this, that the old... man... ours was crucified with Him,” so that we would not enter again into our former life. (Rom. 6:7-8) “For just as he who has died is justified from sin,” so we also, who “died with Christ in baptism, believe that we will also live together ... with Christ” – here and there: here by our living, and there by the best reward for our living. (Rom. 6:9-14) After all, just as “Christ has risen... from the dead and dies no more”, since He suffered the due death as a reward for our sin, - and whoever lives is alive, lives forever - so you, who died to sin: “Let sin reign no more in... your... mortal... body... but present yourselves to God as... living from the dead.” After all, if “your members were instruments of ... righteousness ... to God,” then it is clear that “sin will no longer have dominion over you ... for you are not under the law,” that is, under the punishment of the law. (Rom.6:15-16) Truly, it is not becoming for us, when the fear of the law is taken away from us and we are “under grace,” to sin again and commit crimes. Just as we can receive justification, it is so easy for us to sin: “because to whom you present yourselves... as slaves in obedience,... the slaves of the one... whom you obey - either... sin leads to death, or obedience leads to righteousness.” (Rom.6:17) And if “you were slaves of sin,” now you began to obediently serve by your works, since “the form of teaching was given to you.” (Rom. 6:18-19) “Therefore, since you have been freed from sin and become enslaved to righteousness,” beware,” “I say this in view of the weakness of your flesh,” lest (sins) arise against you and overcome you. So, “as you imagined” your flesh, as if it were an instrument, “to be a slave to uncleanness,” that is, to empty embellishments, gluttony and lust, “so now present” your flesh to fasting, prayer and abstinence, so that you may become “slaves of righteousness” and holiness. (Rom.6:20) “When... you were slaves... of... sin,... you were free from (deprived of) works of righteousness" because you were unable to please both, and you obeyed only sin. (Rom.6:21) “What... then was the fruit” of your works, except “that of which now... you are ashamed?” for they brought you shame as a reward, and as “their end” - again it turns out to be “death ... the second” (Rev. 2:11, 20:14, 21:8). ( Rom.6:22 ) Now, since you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of righteousness by grace, bear fruit to Him whose end is eternal life.
