((Rom. 15:1-3)) he says, we, the strongest 9, must endure the weakness 10 of the powerless, and not add powerlessness to the torment that they have. And each of us should not please himself, but let him also please his neighbors for the good and imitate in this Christ, Who did not please Himself alone, but as it is written: the censures of those who reproached You fell on Me (cf. Ps. 68:10). ((Rom. 15:8)) I say that although Christ Jesus received circumcision, the very truth of God was circumcision, that is, it replaced the place of circumcision, to confirm the promise of the fathers, for our Lord put on circumcised flesh, (which came from) those circumcised fathers. And the words: to confirm the promises of the fathers, are the same thing as he said: and will I cast off the seed of the sons of Israel? - that is, I will not reject (cf. Rom. 11:1. 1 Sam. 12:22. Ps. 93:14). And this was fulfilled and accomplished through One, as it was fulfilled in the fourth generation through Caleb and Jesus (Joshua ch. 14; see note 56). ((Rom.15:9)) So, although this name for the circumcised was the glory of the fathers, yet the pagans in uncircumcision, since they had no circumcised ancestors, glorify God for mercy - that is, let the pagans themselves be instead of the circumcised fathers. But even for this reason, our Lord put on circumcised flesh, so that through it he could bless the pagans who did not have circumcision, (but) equal to Abraham in faith even in uncircumcision. ((Rom.15:9-12)) To what has been said, that the pagans praise God for his mercy, evidence leads: it is written: I will confess You among the pagans (cf. Ps.17:50). And again he says: rejoice, Gentiles, with the people of God (cf. Deut. 32:43). And again: praise the Lord, all pagans (cf. Ps. 116:1). He cited this to prove that already from the time of their prophets the entry of the pagans had been outlined, which was foreshadowed through the appearance of the root of Jesse: “in Him the pagans will hope” (cf. Is. 11:10). (( Rom. 15:17-19 )) Therefore I have praise (I can boast) not outside of Christ, but in Christ Jesus (in that which pertains to) God; for I will not dare to say anything (other than) what Christ has accomplished through me. The deeds that are done through me confirm my words. And what I did among the pagans were not empty words, but actions, powers, signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God. With His help, I was able to go around the countries from Jerusalem even to the borders of Illyria to spread the Gospel of Christ in all countries. ((Rom.15:20-21)) For I do not desire to preach the Gospel where the name of Christ has already been proclaimed, but as it is written: those to whom it has not been announced will see Him, and I desire that this be done through me; I will proclaim Him where no one has heard of Him, so as not to build on someone else’s foundation, that is, not to enter and preach in the place where my comrades have penetrated. ((Rom.15:23-24)) And since there is no longer a free place in these countries, since I filled them with the Gospel of Christ, and since I had a great desire to see you, then when I go to the borders of Spain, I will see you and enjoy you, that is, I will receive benefit from you. ((Rom.15:25)) Now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints who are in Jerusalem. ((Rom.15:26)) For it pleased the inhabitants of Macedonia and Achaia to make some alms for the benefit of the poor among the saints who were in Jerusalem. ((Rom.15:27)) After all, it is they who pay their debts with what they give to them; for if in their spiritual (goods) they became partakers, understand - in the Gospel itself, - then in their carnal (goods) they must become their tributaries by the generosity of alms. ((Rom.15:28)) When I have done this, I will come to you and through you (your places) I will go to Spain. ((Rom.15:29)) And I know that as I come (intending to go) to you, according to the commandment of the Lord I will come for the gospel. ((Rom.15:30-32)) I urge you, brothers, to help 11 me in prayers to God to deliver me from the rebels who are in Judea, so that the offering of our service, which we bring to Jerusalem, may be acceptable before the Lord, and (that) I may come to you with joy according to the will of God.
