Mal.3:1. Behold, I send My Angel... before My face. This is what Christ says about John the Baptist, sent to prepare and smooth the way. What is the way? The one that the sons of Levi made unsmooth. Mal.3:2. And who can endure the day of His coming? This obviously points to that great day of Judgment, on which those who have made the righteous paths of the Lord unsmooth will be subjected to Judgment. It was previously said about them: “You... have turned aside from the path and become weak in many... have corrupted the covenant of Levi” (Mal. 2:8). he comes and, like fire, he will melt the people. Mal.3:3. (will wash away) the sons of Levi, to cleanse and return to them the lordship that they had before. Mal.3:5. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers, against thieves and against adulterers. The law commanded the people not to show leniency to those who had committed a sin, to kill the murderer, stone the thief and the adulterer. In another sense, the words “I will be a quick witness” refer to John, who testified to Herodias’ lewdness and denounced her. Mal.3:10. I will open the abysses of heaven for you, what is meant by the many different blessings of God that God will send down to the Jews who fear His name. In another, sublime sense, the abysses of heaven represent the mouths of the prophets and apostles: heavenly holy drink descended on them, God bestowed upon them numerous blessings, God Himself poured out on them the greatest gifts, descending from Heaven, appearing on earth and living among people. Mal.3:18. And turn and see between the righteous and the wicked, and between those who serve God and those who do not serve Him.
