Isa.4:1. And they have seven wives for one husband, that is, when the wives are deprived of the husbands of whom they were proud, then seven wives will wish better to enter into marriage with one husband, rather than endure the sorrows of loneliness and widowhood in such a difficult time of calamity. The great and general disaster of Jerusalem is depicted by the prophet in order to present to us in a greater light the blessings that will be given to all tribes and peoples of the earth in the days of the Messiah. Isa.4:3. And there will be a remnant in Zion and a remnant in Jerusalem: they will be called holy, - that is, the city of Jerusalem itself is called the city of righteousness, - and everything written in it is brought to life, that is, there will not be an old man in him who would not fulfill the days of his life, that is, who would not reach a ripe old age. Isa.4:4. The Lord will wash away the filth... of the daughters of Zion, that is, the Lord will wash away that filth and those sins of which the wives were guilty, taking care of their jewelry. And the blood... will cleanse them from among them, - that is, the blood of the prophets and righteous people they killed, - that is, by a fair and impartial court, as the former judges of the people judged. Isa.4:5. And the Lord will create, and... the whole place of Mount Zion... will be overshadowed by a cloud. The tabernacle, which departed from there on the chariot seen by Ezekiel, will return to Mount Zion, and will be overshadowed by a spirit and an invisible presence, just as a visible cloud overshadowed it in the desert. Isa.4:6. And it will be in the shade from the heat, that is, they will hide in it on the day when the enemies, depicted under the image of heat, come.
