Having numbered the generations in the tribe of Cain and finished the story of Lamech’s conversation with his wives, Moses turns to numbering the generations in the tribe of Seth and, starting with Adam, says: “And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat a son after his own kind and in his own image” (Gen. 5:3). In Seth, who was in every way similar to Adam, we are presented with the likeness of the Son of God, who is the image of the Father who begat Him, just as Seth is the image of Adam who begat him. When Enos was born to Seth, then, as the Scripture says, “they began to be called by the name of the Lord” (Gen. 4:26), that is, since Seth separated from the family of Cain, his family began to be called by the name of the Lord, or the righteous people of the Lord. Having said that Adam gave birth to Seth, Seth to Enos, Enos to Cainan, Cainan to Maleleel, Maleleel to Jared, Jared to Enoch, Scripture says: “And Enoch pleased God, and was not found” (Gen. 5:24). Others interpret that Enoch, in the sight (in front of) Adam, was transferred to paradise: both so that Adam would not think that Enoch had been killed, like Abel, and would not grieve, and so that he would be comforted about his righteous son Abel and understand that all those like him, either before death or after the resurrection, will fly into paradise. Enoch begat Methuselah, Methuselah begat Lamech, Lamech begat Noah. And Lamech prophesied about his son, saying: “This one will give us rest with his sacrifice, with which he will appease God from our deeds and from the sorrow of our hands, and from the land that the Lord God has cursed” (Gen. 5:29), because God, for the sins of those who live on earth, will destroy in the waters of wrath the houses and gardens we have built, on which our hands have labored. After counting ten generations from Adam to Noah, Moses says of Noah that “he was... five hundred years old, and he begat three sons, Shem, Ham, Japheth” (Gen. 5:32). Noah, who kept his virginity for such a long time, served as a model for his contemporaries, for for five hundred years he kept his virginity among the people about whom it is said: “all flesh corrupted its way” (Gen. 6:12).
