“And there was strife between the herders of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle” (Gen. 13:7). For this, Lot's grumpy servants, by the truth of God, were then sent to the Sodomites, who were also grumpy, so that they too would be punished, and Lot would be plucked out by God from among them. Although God promised that land to Abram, he allowed Lot to choose for himself the land near the Jordan, that is, the entire land of Sodom, through which the Jordan flowed. After Lot separated from Abram, God appeared to Abram and said to him: “Go through the land into its length and breadth, for I will give it to you” (Gen. 13:17). This, obviously, is signified by the Cross. But the land, promised to the ancestors in the mystery of the Cross, cast away its children for the Cross, and those lands were given to other heirs.
