Secondary writing of the book and prophecy about Joachim and his people. Jeremiah 36:1–8. In the 4th year of Joachim, the Prophet receives a command from God to write down all the prophetic speeches he has so far spoken for reading to the people. Jeremiah dictates his speeches to his disciple, Baruch, and then commands him to read the scroll of speeches in the church, where a lot of people have gathered on the occasion of fasting, and Baruch fulfills Jeremiah’s orders. Jer.36:1. In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: Jer.36:2. Take yourself a scroll of books, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you about Israel and about Judah and about all the nations, from the day that I began to speak to you, from the days of Josiah until this day. Jeremiah undoubtedly recorded some of his speeches before. But now he writes all these speeches, almost exclusively of a threatening nature, into one book. Why this was necessary at the present time, we can say the following. Firstly, many of the speeches he made over the course of two decades were now apparently coming to fruition, if not already, and this circumstance must have had a particularly strong impression on those for whom these speeches were intended. Secondly, Jeremiah himself could not now speak openly before the people (v. 5) and, thus, the reading of his speeches by Baruch had to replace the oral preaching of the prophet. Jer.36:4. And Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote in a book scroll from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that He spoke to him. If Jeremiah is currently using the services of Baruch to write his speeches, this is explained not by the fact that he himself did not know how to write (cf. Jer 30:2, 32:10), but by the fact that, dictating his speeches to Baruch, the prophet was in a particularly elevated mood, which did not allow him to engage in the painstaking work of writing. Jer.36:5. And Jeremiah commanded Baruch and said, “I am imprisoned and cannot go into the house of the Lord; "I am imprisoned". From the 19th Art. it is clear that Jeremiah was not imprisoned. With this expression he only wants to say that he is forbidden to speak before the people. Jer.36:6. So go and read the words of the Lord written by you in a scroll from my lips in the hearing of the people in the house of the Lord on the day of fasting, and also in the hearing of all the Jews who came from their cities, read them; "Day of Fasting". It is unknown what kind of post this was. During those difficult times, emergency fasts or days of repentance were sometimes appointed to appease an angry Jehovah. Jeremiah 36:9–26. The contents of the scroll read by Baruch were immediately brought to the attention of the royal advisers. They themselves listened to Jeremiah's prophecy and were horrified. Having advised Baruch to hide with Jeremiah, the advisers reported the scroll to the king, who in turn demanded it. When the scroll was read to the king, he took it in his hands piece by piece and burned it on a brazier, thereby showing contempt for Jeremiah, and then ordered the capture of Jeremiah and Baruch, who, however, with the help of God, managed to escape in time. Jer.36:10. And Baruch read the words of Jeremiah written on the scroll in the house of the Lord, in the room of Gemariah the son of Saphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, in the hearing of all the people. The scribe Gemaria, the son of the former head of the royal office, Saphan (2 Kings 22.3), brother of the one mentioned in ch. XXVI (Jer 26.24) Jeremiah's defender, Ahikam. Now Elisha was in the place of Shaphan (v. 12). – “New Gate” – see Jeremiah 26.10. Jer.36:22. The king at that time, in the ninth month, was sitting in the winter house, and a brazier was burning in front of him. Braziers are still used in Jerusalem to warm rooms in winter (the ninth month corresponds to our December). Jer.36:24. And neither the king nor all his servants who heard all these words were afraid, nor did they tear their clothes. The servants here do not mean those scribes who were afraid of Jeremiah’s predictions (v. 16), but probably just courtiers. Jer.36:26. And the king commanded Jerameel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Selemiah the son of Abdiel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but the Lord hid them. The king's son is a prince from the royal house of David, and not the son of Joachim, who was then no more than 30 years old. Jeremiah 36:27–32. Jeremiah receives a command from God to write his prophecies again and announce to Joachim that for his insolent attitude towards the word of God, the Lord will not allow his descendants to sit on the throne of David, and will deprive the king himself of an honorable burial. Jeremiah 36:30. for this, this is what the Lord says about Joachim, king of Judah: there will be no one from him sitting on the throne of David, and his corpse will be thrown into the heat of the day and the cold of the night; Jeconiah, the son of Joachim, reigned for only three months, and then his uncle, Zedekiah, ascended the throne. – About the burial of Joachim – see Jer 22.19. Jer.36:32. And Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, and he wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of that scroll which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned in the fire; and many similar words have been added to them.
