At a time when the Chaldeans besieged Jerusalem on all sides and when there was no longer any doubt that they would bring the siege to the desired end, Jeremiah, imprisoned in the royal court, received an offer from his relative to buy a plot of land in Anathoth. The Prophet, according to the command of God, bought the plot and made a deed of sale in full form as a sign that over time it would be needed when again in this land of Judea its inhabitants returned from captivity began to buy fields and vineyards. Jer.32:2. Then the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard, which was near the house of the king of Judah. This refers to Nebuchadnezzar's secondary siege of Jerusalem, after he had to withdraw from Jerusalem for a short time in view of the approach of Egyptian troops. – For the imprisonment of Jeremiah, see Jeremiah 37.12–21 v. – “The Courtyard of the Guard” is not a dungeon, but rather a room for the royal guard. Jer.32:3. Zedekiah, king of Judah, imprisoned him there, saying: “Why do you prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I have given this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will take it; Jer.32:4. and Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the hands of the Chaldeans, but he will certainly be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will speak to him mouth to mouth, and his eyes will see his eyes; Jer.32:5. and he will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I visit her, says the Lord. If you fight the Chaldeans, will you not be successful? Here the content of the prophet's speeches about Zedekiah is briefly reported (cf. Jer 21.4 et seq.; Jer. 34.2 et seq.; Jer. 37.17). Jer.32:7. behold, Anameel, the son of your uncle Shallum, comes to you to say: “Buy for yourself my field, which is in Anathoth, because by right of kinship you must buy it.” Jeremiah was probably the closest relative of Hanameel, and therefore this latter, who was probably in a difficult financial situation, offers to buy his plot to Jeremiah, as required by the law of Moses (Num. 27.8-11; Lev. 25.25). This plot, of course, lay near the walls of Anathoth, since here the Levites usually had plots for pasture (Numbers 35.2). If in the book Lion. 25.34 it is forbidden to sell such plots, then this prohibition probably concerned their sale to Jews from another tribe. Jer.32:9. And I bought a field from Hanameel my uncle's son, which is in Anathoth, and weighed out to him seven shekels of silver and ten pieces of silver; “Seven shekels of silver and ten pieces of silver”, i.e. 17 silver shekels - the price is low (13 rubles 50 kopecks in 1909), but for Jeremiah at that time this amount, of course, was significant. Jer.32:10. and he wrote it in a book and sealed it, and invited witnesses to it, and weighed out the silver on the scales. "Sealed". The Prophet seals one of the bills of sale to give it to his disciple, Baruch, for safekeeping. The other list remains unsealed so that it is always possible to find out who owns the above plot. Jer.32:14. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these records, this bill of sale which is sealed, and this record which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may remain there many days. The record will have significance, perhaps, for the descendants of Jeremiah and Hanameel. Jeremiah 32:16–25. In his prayer, the prophet professes faith in the omnipotence and justice of Jehovah. Jehovah discovered both especially in relation to the people of Israel, whom He had previously led out of Egypt with a strong hand, and now, for disobedience, subjected them to all the horrors of a siege. Foreseeing that the entire Jewish country was designated by God for devastation, the prophet asks why the Lord commanded him to buy a plot of land. Jer.32:21. and brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, and with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, “With great terror,” this is the horror that gripped the peoples living near Palestine and Egypt (Deut. 11.25). Jeremiah 32:26–44. The Lord answers the prophet that Jerusalem will indeed be taken by the Chaldeans, and points out the reason for this - apostasy from God and idolatry. However, the Lord does not forever reject His people. He will gather him again from different countries in which he will be scattered, and will conclude a New Eternal Covenant with him. Then the plots of land in Judea will again be returned to their owners. Jer.32:39. And I will give them one heart and one way, so that they may fear Me all the days of their lives, for their own good and the good of their children after them. Here the Lord explains the expression of Jeremiah 31 - “I will write (the law) in their hearts.” He Himself will lead them through the path of true knowledge of God and obedience to God, and only with such constant divine guidance will an eternal Covenant be possible between Him and the Israeli people. Jer.32:44. They will buy fields for money and record them, and seal them, and invite witnesses—in the land of Benjamin and in the outskirts of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hills, and in the cities of the lowlands, and in the cities of the south; For I will restore their captivity, says the Lord.
