1–15. The command of Jehovah given to Jeremiah regarding the symbolic action that he was to perform in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, and his return from this valley. Jeremiah 19:1–15. The Lord commands the prophet to buy an earthen vessel and, in the presence of several Jewish elders, go with him to the valley of the sons of Ginnom or to Tophet. Here he must announce to Jerusalem the terrible judgment of God for the sins of its inhabitants. The valley of the sons of Hinnom will be called the valley of slaughter, and Jerusalem will be destroyed, like a jar made of clay that is broken, and will become an unclean place. Coming from Tophet, Jeremiah briefly repeats the prophecy he expressed at Tophet. Jer.19:1. Thus said the Lord: Go and buy an earthenware jug from the potter; and take with you the elders of the people and the elders of the priesthood, Jer.19:2. and go out into the valley of the sons of Hinnom, which is at the gate of Harshith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you, The Kharshif Gate is a gate of shards. This was the name of one of the southern gates of Jerusalem due to the mass of shards lying around here. They could go to the valley of the sons of Ginnom. Jer.19:3. and say: Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place, of which whoever hears will have a ringing in his ears, “Kings of the Jews” - see Jer 13.13. - “This place,” that is, to the valley of Ginnom, and with it to the whole land of Judea. Jer.19:4. because they have abandoned Me and made this place strangers and burn incense on it to other gods, whom neither they, nor their fathers, nor the kings of Judah knew; filled this place with the blood of innocents “They made it a stranger” - that is, they desecrated it. - “The blood of the innocent”, that is, the blood of children who were sacrificed to idols (Ps 105.38). Jer.19:9. And I will feed them with the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and each one will eat the flesh of his neighbor, being in siege and distress, when their enemies and those who seek their souls oppress them. The inhabitants of Jerusalem, besieged by the Babylonians, ate their children (Lam. 2:20, 4:10). Jeremiah 19:13. And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be, like the place of Tophet, unclean, because on the roofs of all the houses they burn incense to all the host of heaven and pour out drink offerings to foreign gods. All of Jerusalem will be desecrated, just as the valley of Tophet will be desecrated by the corpses of the murdered Jews scattered on it. Jeremiah 19:14. And Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, and stood in the courtyard of the house of the Lord and said to all the people: There is no doubt that Jeremiah did exactly what the Lord commanded him to do.
