1. David's construction of the palace. 2–7. Multiplication of his family. 8–17. Two victories over the Philistines. The content of the chapter is a repetition (2 Samuel 5:11–25). By reproducing its details, the author rearranges only the sequence of events. According to the book Kings, David’s construction of his palace preceded the transfer of the Ark of the Covenant (2 Samuel 5:10–11,6:1, etc.), and according to the book. Chronicles, it took place after the last event. A sufficient motivation for such a rearrangement could be the author’s desire to show that David is a real king of a theocratic state: the transfer of the Ark of the Covenant, a matter more important from the theocratic point of view than the construction of a palace, preoccupied him with thoughts about personal conveniences. 1 Chronicles 14:8. And the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, and all the Philistines rose up to look for David. And David heard about this and went against them. 1 Chronicles 14:9. And they went to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there; and David said, God has broken my enemies with my hand, like a rush of water. Therefore they gave the name to that place: Baal-Perazim. 1 Chronicles 14:12. And the Philistines left their gods there, and David commanded, and they were burned with fire. 1 Chronicles 14:13. And the Philistines came again and settled down in the valley. 1 Chronicles 14:14. And David again asked God, and God said to him: do not go straight towards them, turn away from them and go towards them from the direction of the mulberry trees; 1 Chronicles 14:15. and when you hear the sound of footsteps on the tops of the mulberry trees, then go to battle, for God has come out before you to smite the camp of the Philistines. 1 Chronicles 14:16. And David did as God commanded him; and they smote the host of the Philistines, from Gibeon to Gezer. 1 Chronicles 14:17. And the name of David spread throughout all the lands, and the Lord made him terrible to all nations. Verses 8-17: According to the author (1 Chronicles 13:14 cf. 1 Chronicles 15:25), victories over the Philistines fall during the three-month stay of the ark of the covenant in the house of Abeddar the Gittite. Instead of “went out to meet,” in (2 Samuel 5:17) there is a less definite expression: “went into the fort.” The remark of this verse is missing in the book.
