David's intention is to build a permanent church to God. God's promises to David, spoken through the prophet Nathan. David's prayer of thanksgiving and praise to God. 2 Samuel 7:2. Then the king said to the prophet Nathan: Behold, I live in a house of cedar, and the ark of God is under the tent. “Here I live in a cedar house.” See (2 Samuel 5:11). 2 Samuel 7:3. And Nathan said to the king, Go and do whatever is in your heart; for the Lord is with you. 2 Samuel 7:4. But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 2 Samuel 7:5. Go and tell My servant David, Thus says the Lord: Will you build Me a house to dwell in? To the question of “how Nathan, being a prophet, did not know the will of God and ordered David to build the house of God,” Blessed Theodoret answers: “I have already said that the prophets did not know everything, but only as the grace of God revealed to them. So Samuel did not know who should be anointed as king instead of Saul (1 Samuel 16:1-13); Elisha did not know the grief of the Shunammite woman (2 Kings 4:27). Likewise, Nathan, having praised the king’s intention, thought to please the God of all; but the Lord God, appearing to him at night, expressed his real will regarding what was planned by David” (Blessed Theodoret, commentary on 2 Samuel, question 21). 2 Samuel 7:6. when I did not dwell in a house from the time I brought the children of Israel out of Egypt until this day, but moved about in tents and tabernacles? 2 Samuel 7:7. Wherever I walked with all the children of Israel, did I even say a word to any of the tribes to which I appointed to shepherd my people Israel: “Why don’t you build me a house of cedar”? 2 Samuel 7:8. And now say this to My servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the flock of sheep, that you might be a leader of My people Israel; 2 Samuel 7:9. and was with you wherever you went, and destroyed all your enemies before you, and made your name great, like the name of the great ones on earth. 2 Samuel 7:10. And I will build a place for my people Israel, and I will establish them, and they will live peacefully in their place, and will no longer be troubled, and wicked people will no longer oppress them as before, 2 Samuel 7:11. from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. And the Lord declares to you that He will build you a house. Until now, the Lord God has not demanded a permanent church for himself, because the time has not yet come for its construction. And should David, one of the creatures of the Creator of the universe, take care of the creation of His church (v. 5). It is not David to the Lord, but the Lord, who is kind to David, who will build him his house (v. 11). In (1 Chronicles 22:6-11) another explanation is indicated for why it was not David who had to build the church of the Lord: the majestic and durable church of the Lord of the world was to be built by the chosen king of the world among the chosen people of God - Solomon (“Solomon” from Hebrew means “Peaceful”). 2 Samuel 7:12. When your days are fulfilled, and you rest with your fathers, then I will raise up your seed after you, which will come from your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 2 Samuel 7:13. He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 2 Samuel 7:14. I will be his father, and he will be My son; and if he sins, I will punish him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men; 2 Samuel 7:15. but I will not take My mercy from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I rejected before you. 2 Samuel 7:16. And your house and your kingdom will be established forever before Me, and your throne will stand forever. “Having said this about Solomon, the son of David, the prophet adds a prediction about the Lord Christ, for he says: “I will be His father, and He will be My son.” And that this was said about the Lord Christ is witnessed by the divine apostle, who said to the Jews: “To whom did the angel say: Thou art my Son, this day I begot Thee? And again: I will be His Father, and He will be My Son?” (Hebrews 1:5). And the words that follow are least of all befitting of the kings of Israel; their truth lies in the Lord Christ alone. For it is said: “And His house will be faithful, and His kingdom will be forever before Me: and His throne will be established forever” (v. 16, according to the LXX translation). Solomon was shorter-lived than other people, and did not even reach his father’s old age; and all those who descended from him (the kings of Judah) met a common end for all. Therefore, it is necessary to do one of two things: either apply this to the Lord Christ, or call the prophecy of the God of all false. But the latter is evil and blasphemous. Therefore, it is necessary, although the Jews do not want it, to accept the first” (Blessed Theodoret, interpretation, on 1 Kings, question 21). 2 Samuel 7:19. And this has not yet appeared in Thy sight, my Lord, Lord; but You also announced the house of Your servant afar off. This is already human. My God, my Lord! “This is already human,” that is, the Lord’s comprehensive care for man makes Him in the consciousness of man an unusually close being to him. 2 Samuel 7:21. For the sake of Your word and according to Your heart You do this, revealing all this great things to Your servant. "For the sake of your word." See (1 Kings 16:1-13; 2 Kings 3:17-19,5:1-3). 2 Samuel 7:23. And who is like Your people, Israel, the only people on earth for whom God came to acquire them as a people for Himself and to glorify His name and to do great and terrible things before Your people, which You acquired for Yourself from the Egyptians, driving out the nations and their gods? “That he might win him for himself as a people.” See (Ex.19:3–6; Deut.4:7,33:29). “And to do great and terrible things before the people.” This refers to the miracles and signs of the Lord that took place before the Jews left Egypt, at the exit itself, during their journey through the deserts and during the conquest of the land of promise.
