After Abimelech, Tholas, the son of Pui, the son of Dod, from the tribe of Issachar, rose up to save Israel. He lived in Shamir on Mount Ephraim. Judges 10:2. He was a judge of Israel for twenty-three years, and died and was buried in Shamir. Judges 10:3. After him Jairus rose from Gilead and was judge of Israel for twenty-two years. Judges 10:4. He had thirty [two] sons, who rode on thirty [two] young donkeys, and they had thirty [two] cities; to this day they are called the villages of Jairus, which are in the land of Gilead. Judges 10:5. And Jairus died and was buried in Camon. After the death of Abimelech, the judges of Israel were successively Tholas from the tribe of Issachar and Jairus from Gilead, who did not declare themselves by special actions in the life of the people. Of these, the first, upon death, was buried in the city of Shamir of Ephraim, which differs from Shamir of Judah (Joshua 15:48), and the second - in the city of Kamon, which, according to the testimony of Josephus, lay in the tribe of Manasseh, in Gilead (Antiquit. V, 7, 6). Judges 10:6. The children of Israel continued to do evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Asherahs, and the gods of the Aramaic, and the gods of the Sidonians, and the gods of the Moabites, and the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines; but they forsook the Lord and did not serve Him. Judges 10:7. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He delivered them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites; Judges 10:8. They oppressed and tormented the children of Israel from that year for eighteen years, all the children of Israel on the other side of Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. Judges 10:9. Finally the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to wage war against Judah and Benjamin and the house of Ephraim. And it was very difficult for the children of Israel. After the death of Thola and Jairus, the idolatry of the Israelites intensified to the extreme: they worshiped the gods of all the surrounding nations, while at the same time abandoning the service of the Lord. For such wickedness, the Lord handed them over to the rule of two nations: the Philistines (cf. Gen. 10:14), who occupied the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of Israeli territory, and the Ammonites (Gen. 19:38), who lived near the Dead Sea, northeast of the Moabites, in the former territory of the Amorites, who (the Ammonites) in the present case crossed the Jordan and oppressed Israelis. Judges 10:10. And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, and said, We have sinned against Thee, because we have forsaken our God and served the Baals. Judges 10:11. And the Lord said to the children of Israel, Have not the Egyptians, and the Amorites, and the Ammonites, and the Philistines, oppressed you? Judges 10:12. and the Sidonians, and the Amalekites, and the Moabites: and when you called upon Me, did I not deliver you out of their hands? Judges 10:13. But you left Me and began to serve other gods; therefore I will no longer save you: Judges 10:14. go, call upon the gods whom you have chosen, let them save you in your time of need. Judgment 10:15 . And the children of Israel said to the Lord, We have sinned; do with us whatever You please, just deliver us now. Judges 10:16. And they rejected foreign gods and began to serve [only] the Lord. And His soul did not endure the suffering of Israel. When the Israelites, under the influence of oppression by the Ammonites, turned to the Lord with a prayer for mercy, the Lord, who had already had mercy on them more than once, this time, in order to arouse in them deeper repentance, did not immediately send them a deliverer, but did this only after he saw their sincere repentance and turning to Him. Judges 10:17. The Ammonites gathered and encamped in Gilead; The children of Israel also gathered together and pitched at Mizpah. Judges 10:18. The people and the princes of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever makes war against the Ammonites will be the ruler of all the inhabitants of Gilead.” Seeing that the Ammonites occupied Gilead, the Israelites gathered and settled in Mizpah, which in the present case is identified with Ramoth of Gilead (Deut. 4:43; Josh. 13:26), and offered the first one who dared to start a war against the Ammonites to be their leader.
