Moses reminds the Jewish people of the command to march from Sinai to Canaan. – Election of 1000 chiefs, 100 chiefs, 50 chiefs, 10 chiefs. - Departure of the spies for the land of Canaan. - The murmur of the people and the judgment of God's truth. – Unauthorized invasion of the southern borders of Canaan and defeat at Hormah. Deut.1:1. These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness on the plain opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Asheroth, and Dizagab, Deut.1:2. eleven days' journey from Horeb, on the road from Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. This refers to the southern part of Eastern Transjordan and the adjacent desert. Heb. Dej-zagab (Russian: “Dizagav”) is rendered in the LXX by the common noun: “Καταχρύσεα” (glorified: “golden ores”). Deut.1:3. In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, on the first [day] of the month Moses spoke to [all] the children of Israel everything that the Lord had commanded him about them. Deut.1:4. After he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashteroth in Edrei, “The fortieth year” - after the Jews left Egypt. Deut.1:5. beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law and said: “Explain the Law” Deuteronomy is not a codification of any new laws in relation to those set out in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers: it is a moral and edifying reproduction, in most cases, of the same laws that are written down in the said books. “After forty years,” notes the blessed one. Theodoret, - when, by Divine determination, those condemned died (to die in the desert), God commands to count their children who have reached the same age as the fathers were at the time of the first count. Leading these children into the promised land, God, through the prophet, teaches the law that was given to their lawless fathers” (Interpretation of the book Deuteronomy 1). Deut.1:6. The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb and said: “It is enough for you to live on this mountain! Deut.1:7. turn yourselves, set out and go to the mountain of the Amorites and to all their neighbors, to the plain, to the mountain, to the low places and to the southern region and to the shores of the sea, to the land of Canaan and to Lebanon, even to the great river, the river Euphrates; Deut.1:8. Behold, I have given you this land; go, take as an inheritance the land that the Lord promised with an oath to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to them and their descendants.” We remember the time when, after the announcement of the law and the construction of the tabernacle, the Lord commands the people to go to the southern borders of the land promised to them (Num. 10.12). Deut.1:9. And I said to you at that time: I cannot lead you alone; Deut.1:10. The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are now as numerous as the stars of heaven; Deut.1:11. May the Lord God of your fathers multiply you a thousand times what you are now, and bless you, as He said to you: Deut.1:12. How can I alone bear your burdens, your burdens and your strife? Deut.1:13. Choose for yourselves from among your tribes men who are wise, understanding, and experienced, and I will make them your rulers. Deut.1:14. You answered me and said: You command me to do a good deed. Deut.1:15. And I took the chief men of your tribes, wise men, [prudent] and tried, and made them captains over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers of your tribes. Deut.1:16. And I gave commandment to your judges at that time, saying: Hear your brethren and judge fairly, both brother and brother, and his stranger; Deut.1:17. do not distinguish between persons at the trial, listen to both small and great: do not be afraid of the human face, for judgment is the work of God; and bring a matter that is difficult for you to me, and I will listen to it. Deut.1:18. And at that time I gave you commandments about everything that you should do. Moses speaks of appointing leaders from among the people subordinate to him, on the advice of Jethro (Ex. 18.13–26). According to the calculations of the rabbis, for the 600,000 people who came out of Egypt (Exodus 12.37), the following officials were appointed: 60,000 foremen, 12,000 Pentecostals, 6,000 centurions, 600 commanders - a total of 78,600 people. The commented passage does not refer to those 70 elders who were chosen to share with Moses the burden of the highest national government and who, as the closest assistants of the prophet, were illuminated by the spirit of prophecy (Num. 11.11–17,24–29). Deut.1:19. And we departed from Horeb, and walked through all this great and terrible wilderness, which you saw, on the way to the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded, and we came to Kadesh-barnea. Deut.1:20. And I said to you, “You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving to us; Deut.1:21. Behold, the Lord your God has given you this land; go, take possession of it, as the Lord God of your fathers told you; do not fear or be dismayed. Deut.1:22. But you all came up to me and said: Let us send people before us so that they explore the land for us and bring us news about the road we should take and about the cities we should go to. Deut.1:23. This word pleased me, and I took twelve men from you, one man from [each] tribe. Deut.1:24. They went, climbed the mountain and reached the valley of Eshkhol, and surveyed it; Deut.1:25. and they took the fruits of the land in their hands and brought them to us, and brought us news and said, “The land that the Lord our God is giving us is good.” Deut.1:26. But you did not want to go and rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, Deut.1:27. and they murmured in your tents and said: The Lord, out of hatred for us, brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hands of the Amorites and to destroy us; Deut.1:28. where will we go? our brothers relaxed our hearts, saying: that people is greater, [more numerous] and taller than us, the cities there are large and with fortifications reaching to heaven, and we saw the sons of Anak there. Deut.1:29. And I said to you: do not be afraid or be afraid of them; Deut.1:30. The Lord your God goes before you; He will fight for you, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, Deut.1:31. and in this wilderness, where, as you saw, the Lord your God carried you as a man carries his son, all the way that you walked until you came to this place. Deut.1:32. But even so you did not believe the Lord your God, Deut.1:33. Who walked the path before you - to look for places for you to stop, at night in fire to show you the path along which to go, and during the day in a cloud. Deut.1:34. And the Lord [God] heard your words, and was angry, and swore, saying: Deut.1:35. none of these people, from this evil generation, will see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers; Deut.1:36. only Caleb the son of Jephunneh shall see her; to him will I give the land through which he passed, and to his sons, because he obeyed the Lord. Deut.1:37. And the Lord was angry with me because of you, saying, “You will not enter there either; Deut.1:38. Joshua the son of Nun, who is with you, he will enter there; establish him, for he will bring Israel into possession of it; Deut.1:39. your children, about whom you said that they would fall as prey to the enemies, and your sons, who now know neither good nor evil, they will enter there, I will give it to them, and they will take possession of it; Deut.1:40. and you will turn and go into the desert on the road to the Red Sea. Wed. Number 13:1, 14:1–39, 20:12. Deut.1:41. And you then answered and said to me: We have sinned against the Lord our God; let us go and fight, as the Lord our God commanded us. And you girded yourself, each one with his weapons of war, and foolishly decided to ascend the mountain. Deut.1:42. But the Lord said to me: Tell them: Do not go up and fight, because I am not among you, lest your enemies strike you. Deut.1:43. And I told you, but you did not listen and resisted the command of the Lord and, out of your stubbornness, ascended the mountain. Deut.1:44. And the Amorites who dwelt on that mountain came out against you, and pursued you as bees do, and smote you in Seir as far as Hormah. Deut.1:45.
