Book title. In the Hebrew text the fourth book of Moses is called:
1) “Vai-adabber” (“And he said”), according to the first expression of the book;
2) “Bemidbar” (“In the desert”), according to the contents of the book, as well as the further expression of verse 1 of its first chapter. In addition, in the language of the rabbis it is called
3) “Sefer Misparim” (“Book of Calculations”), according to the nature of the content of some of its sections. For the same reason, in the Greek Bible the book was called “Ἀριθμοί” (“Numbers”), in Latin “Numen” (“Numbers”), in Slavic and Russian – “Numbers”.
Its contents. The Book of Numbers contains a narrative of the Jews' journey through the deserts from Mount Sinai to the Moabite plains, that is, to the southeastern edge of the Promised Land. In addition to the narration of the wanderings of the Jews and the indication of some of the laws given to the chosen people by God, the book includes detailed data on the calculation of the people, the Levites, the firstborn, and the camps of movement.
