Census of the Levites. – Distribution of Levitical clans according to duties at the tabernacle. – Census of Israelite firstborns. Numbers 3:11. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Numbers 3:12. Behold, I have taken the Levites from the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who open the womb from the children of Israel [they will be in their place]; the Levites must be mine, Numbers 3:13. for all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to myself all the firstborn of Israel, from man to beast; they must be Mine. I am the Lord. (Wed. Num. 3:40–45). In gratitude to Jehovah for saving the Egyptians from slavery, the Jews had to dedicate their firstborn to Him (Exodus 13:1, 11–16). Now the firstborn are given back to the families of Israel; in exchange for the firstborn, the tribe of Levi is allocated to serve God at the tabernacle. For the numerical surplus of the firstborn compared to the Levites (v. 46), a ransom is paid to the tabernacle (Num. 3:47–51; cf. Num. 18.15, 16). Numbers 3:39. All the Levites who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the Lord, according to their generations, all males, from one month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.
