Addition to the law on heirs of land. – Conclusion of the book of Num. Numbers 36:1. The heads of the families came from the tribe of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the tribes of the children of Joseph, and spoke before Moses [and before Eleazar the priest] and before the princes, the heads of the families of the children of Israel, Numbers 36:2. and they said: The Lord commanded our lord to give the land as an inheritance to the children of Israel by lot, and our lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zalpaad our brother to his daughters; Numbers 36:3. if they are the wives of the sons of any other tribe of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe in which they will be [wives], and will be taken away from our inheritance inherited by lot; Numbers 36:4. and even when the children of Israel have their jubilee, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe in which they will be [wives], and their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers. Numbers 36:5. And Moses commanded the children of Israel, according to the word of the Lord, and said, The tribe of the children of Joseph speaketh the truth; Numbers 36:6. This is what the Lord commands about the daughters of Zalpaad: they can be the wives of those who please their eyes, but they must be wives in the tribe of their father’s tribe, Numbers 36:7. so that the inheritance of the children of Israel does not pass from tribe to tribe; for each of the children of Israel must be bound to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers; Numbers 36:8. and every daughter who inherits inheritance in the tribes of the children of Israel shall be the wife of one of the descendants of her father's tribe, so that the children of Israel may inherit every inheritance of their fathers, Numbers 36:9. and so that the inheritance does not pass from tribe to another tribe; for each of the tribes of the children of Israel must be bound to its own inheritance.
