See also Death - About eternal death. a) place of torment: The rich man died and they buried him; and in hell, being in torment, he raised his eyes, saw Abraham in the distance and Lazarus in his bosom, and cried out: Father Abraham! have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame (Luke 16:22–24); b) eternal punishment: Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awaken, some to eternal life, others to eternal reproach and shame (Dan.12:2). And these will go into everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46). It is right before God to repay those who offend you with tribulation, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven, in flaming fire, vengeance will be taken on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel, who will be subject to the punishment of eternal destruction (2 Thess. 1:6-9). The smoke of their torment will ascend forever and ever, and they will have no rest day or night (Rev. 14:11). a) eternal fire: If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut them off and throw them away from you: it is better for you to enter life without an arm or without a foot, than with two hands and two feet to be cast into eternal fire (Matthew 18:8) 9. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, like them, committed fornication and were subjected to the punishment of eternal fire, are set as an example: so it will be exactly with the dreamers who defile the flesh, reject the rulers and slander the high authorities (Jude 1: 7-8); b) lake of fire: Anyone who was not written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:15). The fearful and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone (Rev. 21:8); c) unquenchable fire: They will see the corpses of people who have retreated from Me: their worm will not die and their fire will not be quenched (Is. 66:24). His fork is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn, and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire (Matt. 3:12; Luke 3:17); d) fiery Gehenna: Whoever says to his brother, “You are a fool,” is subject to fiery Gehenna (Matthew 5:22). Moreover, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna (Matthew 10:28). Serpents, spawn of vipers! How will you escape from condemnation to Gehenna? (Matthew 23:33); e) abyss: I saw an angel descending from heaven, who had the key to the abyss and a large chain in his hand. He took the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and cast him into the abyss, and imprisoned him (Rev. 20:1-3); f) prepared for the devil and his angels: Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). God did not spare the angels who sinned, but, having bound them in the bonds of hellish darkness, He handed them over to be judged for punishment (2 Peter 2:4). The angels who did not retain their dignity, but left their home, are kept in everlasting bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day (Jude 1:6). The wicked will be cast into hell: Let the wicked be cast into hell (Ps. 9:18). They will be shut up in the pit like sheep (Ps. 49:15). You, Capernaum, who ascended to heaven, will be cast down to hell (Matthew 11:23). The devil with the beast and the false prophets was cast into hell: The devil, who deceived the nations, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever (Rev. 20:10). The gates of hell will not prevail against the Church created by the Lord: I will build My Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). The Savior spoke these words not about the members of the body: He does not condemn them, but the corrupted will, commanding us to avoid passions that lead to sin, and reasons and objects that arouse passion, even if they were the objects most dear to us, the most kind, the most necessary, like hands or feet are dear and necessary. We must renounce everything that interferes with our salvation, which must be preferred to everything earthly. “Enter into life” means to inherit eternal bliss in the kingdom of Christ, in which the life of the soul consists, while eternal torment in Gehenna constitutes the death of the soul.
