with illustrations representing portraits of famous figures and images of the most important events of the 19th century This volume of “History of the Christian Church of the 19th Century” includes exclusively the history of the Orthodox East. Before us unfolds a picture of the church-historical life of that world, which, crushed for centuries by a heavy barbarian yoke, therefore lagged behind the general world movement and almost sentenced to historical death, by the 19th century not only again showed signs of life, but also revealed a powerful desire for revival and renewal, especially in the person of the Slavic peoples. This world naturally splits into two halves - the Greek world and the Slavic world, accordingly, the volume itself is divided into two parts, of which the first includes the history of the venerable churches of the Greek Orthodox East, led by the Church of Constantinople, and the second - the history of the Slavic churches (including the Romanian), which finds its natural conclusion in the history of the Russian Church, as the most powerful and flourishing branch of Orthodoxy. The entire volume ends with a brief description of the 19th century in ecclesiastical and religious terms. Particularly active participants in the compilation of this volume were Master of Theology I.I. Sokolov, who owns the entire first part, covering the history of the Greek churches, and Master of Theology S.G. Runkevich, who took upon himself the processing of the history of the Russian Church. The following took part in the compilation of other sections: professor of the Samokov Theological School in Bulgaria P.P. Smerdynsky (Bulgaria), professor of Kardovetsky “theology” Dusan N. Jakšić (on the history of the Serbian church, especially in Austria-Hungary) and teacher of the Petrograd Alexander Nevsky spirit. School A.P. Solovyevich (Romania) - to all of whom, and especially the first two, the publisher expresses sincere gratitude for their diligent cooperation in this far from easy work. With this volume we complete the “History of the Christian Church in the 19th Century” that we have undertaken. Of course, even with two large volumes it was impossible to exhaust the entire diversity of content of the church-historical life of the Christian world during this century, and some aspects of it were left without sufficient presentation and coverage (especially in the field of internal mental movements of the century, a detailed presentation of which would require another special volume); but we think that even within these limits, the church-historical life of the past century stands out in sufficient relief to give readers complete confidence that no matter how dark forces rise against the source of true light and life, they cannot overcome it, and the Church of Christ has always emerged from all the turmoil of this world and will continue to emerge in victory and glory, - according to the words of the Apostle: “This is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith”! As for volume II itself, we can safely say that in terms of the richness and completeness of the material collected in it, it not only constitutes a new contribution to our domestic church historical literature, but will not be devoid of interest for Western European literature, which, for all the richness of its works in the field of church history, still has nothing similar in the field of the modern history of the Orthodox East.
