It is based on jealousy, or zeal - a thirst for action, and its stimulants are the pleasant, useful and necessary, which when they are not there, jealousy sleeps and the active forces lose tension and decline. They support desire, and desire fuels jealousy. The process of revealing this side of the soul is as follows. There are needs in the soul and body, to which everyday needs are grafted - family and social. These needs in themselves do not give a specific desire, but only force them to seek satisfaction. When the satisfaction of a need in one way or another is given once, then after that, along with the awakening of the need, the desire for what was satisfied with the need is born. Desire always has a specific object that satisfies the need. Another need was satisfied in various ways, therefore, with its awakening, different desires are born: now of this, now of another, now of a third object that can satisfy the need. In the unfolded life of a person, needs are not visible behind desires. Only these last ones swarm in the soul and demand satisfaction, as if for themselves. What should a soul do with these desires? She will have to choose which item she wants to give preference to. Based on the choice, a decision is made - to make, or get, or use the chosen one. Based on the decision, a selection of funds is made and the method and order of execution is determined. This is followed, finally, by a matter of its time and place. Every business, even the smallest one, goes in this order. You can check this in any of your business. According to skill, sometimes all these actions are performed instantly, and the desire is immediately followed by action. The choice, decision and means are then taken from previous cases and do not require special proceedings. In an older person, almost everything is done by skill. Rarely does any enterprise or undertaking occur that comes out of the ordinary order of affairs and knowledge. It just so happens that the current life requires corresponding actions. As they are repeated often, they naturally turn into a habit, disposition, rule of life and character. From the totality of all such skills, rules and orders, the way of life of a known person is established, just as from the totality of established concepts the image of his thoughts and views is formed. Knowing about someone's life, you can guess what he thinks at one time or another and how he will act in certain circumstances. The ruler of active life is prudence, which is the same reason, only in the service of the will. In the mental realm, the intellect decides how something exists out of existence, and in the desirable and active realm, it determines how what should be done so that what is legally desired is truly achieved. When he learns to determine this properly, so that a person always conducts his business, or for the most part, with success, then prudence is rightly attributed to him - the ability to successfully conduct business, correctly balancing means with goals and affairs with external circumstances. From what has been said, it will not be difficult for you to draw a conclusion about the natural lawful activity of the will, which, as you see, is the mistress of all our forces and all life. Its job is to determine the image, method and measure of satisfaction of desires generated by needs or those that have replaced them, so that life flows as it should, bringing peace and joy to the living. We have, as mentioned, needs and desires - mental, physical, everyday and social. They do not manifest themselves in the same way for everyone, because not everyone’s life is the same, but for one it is this way, for another it is different. It is up to a person to determine how, in his situation, he can and should satisfy his needs and desires, to adapt methods suitable to this, and to lead his life accordingly. Leading your life sensibly according to the established norm with all its affairs and undertakings is the task of the desirable, or active, side of our life. That's how it should be. But delve into it and see how it happens. On the mental side we experience confusion, scattering and wandering of thoughts, and on the desirable side we experience inconstancy, disorder and waywardness of desires, and behind them, deeds. How much time we spend in idleness and idleness: we wander here and there, not knowing why; we do and redo, not being able to give a sound account of it; We have initiative after initiative and business after business, but all that comes out is hustle and bustle.
