But besides this slow movement, they also seethe incessantly, do not stand still, and mill about like a cloud of mosquitoes in the summer. Meanwhile, they are not left without action. No, beneath them lies the heart, and from them blows incessantly fall into this heart and produce an effect corresponding to themselves. What a thought, such a movement of the heart. Hence, now joy, now annoyance, now envy, now fear, now hope, now self-confidence, now despair arise one after another in the heart. There is no stop and no order, just like in thoughts. The heart constantly trembles with feelings, like an aspen leaf. And it doesn't stop there. A thought with a feeling always gives rise to a desire, more or less strong. Under the restless thoughts and feelings, desires are also disordered: to acquire something, to abandon another; to make fun of one, to take revenge on another; then run away from everyone, then step out into the middle and act; in one, obey, and in the other, stand on your own, and so on, and so on, and so on. It’s not that all this is being fulfilled, but riddles about this or that constantly swarm in the soul. Look after yourself when, for example, you are sitting at work - you will see all this happening in yourself, as on a stage. So this is the disorder and confusion we have inside. It causes disorder in life and some kind of darkness all around. And do not expect a decent life until you destroy this internal disorder. It in itself causes a lot of evil, but it is especially bad because demons attach themselves to it, and twist it, and stir it up inside even more, directing everything to harm us and to our destruction. When during fasting you examined yourself and decided to eliminate one thing and add another, then, of course, you could not help but pay attention to your inner turmoil and not arm yourself against it with due jealousy. And if you please, especially and first of all, put pressure on this internal enemy. You have made a firm intention to work for the Lord and belong to Him alone from now on. The sacrament of repentance granted you forgiveness in everything and showed you clean before the face of God. Holy Communion brought you into close communion or renewed your communion with the Lord Jesus Christ and filled you with all grace-filled power. And now you are equipped for the job. If, to correct our inner life, it was enough to want - and everything would appear there in the best form, or to give a word - and the word would immediately be followed by action, then you would have nothing more to worry about. Everything would go better for you and you cannot wish for it. But such is the law of a morally free life, especially in a damaged being, that there is a firm determination, and grace-filled help is ready, but still one must strain and fight, and above all with oneself. Suddenly, our inner being is never put into proper order, but always upon the perception of a good intention and the granting of assisting grace through the sacraments, intensive work on oneself, on one’s inner being is required and must be done again - work and effort aimed at destroying the disorder reigning within and in its place establishing order and order, which will be followed by inner peace and a constant joyful state of the heart. And this is what is now offered to you! Don’t think, however, that in order to do this you have to redo a bunch of things or impose on yourself who knows how many rules. Not at all. Two or three rules, two or three warnings - and that’s it. There is disorder inside - you know this from experience. It must be destroyed - this is what you want, this is what you have decided to do. Take on the task of eliminating the cause of this disorder. The reason for the disorder is that our spirit has lost its fulcrum. His support is in God. Again the spirit enters upon her with remembrance of God. So, first: we must learn to constantly remember God with fear and reverence. Last time I wrote about this, and you agreed to it. You know what technique you need to use for this, and you’ve already started. Bless, Lord! And please continue this work without fail. Be with the Lord, no matter what you do, and turn your mind to Him, trying to behave as someone behaves before the king. You'll get the hang of it soon, just don't give up or interrupt. If you conscientiously follow this small rule, then this inner turmoil will be constrained from within and, although it will break out in the form of empty and inappropriate thoughts, then in the form of inappropriate feelings and desires, you will immediately notice this wrongness and drive away these uninvited guests, hastening each time to restore unanimity about the One and Only Lord. I encourage you! Get started and continue without interruption - and you will soon achieve what you are looking for. Reverent attention will be established in the One God, and with Him will come inner peace. I say: soon, but not in a day or two. It may take months. Oh, whenever and not years! Ask the Lord, and He Himself will help you. In addition to this, add the following to this guide: do nothing that your conscience forbids, and do not omit anything that your conscience tells you to do, whether big or small. Conscience is always our moral lever. That inside of us our children - thoughts, feelings and desires - indulge in impermissible playfulness, the reason for this, by the way, is that conscience has lost its strength. Return this power to her, expressing complete submission to her. You have now enlightened her by finding out everything you should do and what you shouldn't do. Please follow this unswervingly and so decisively that even if you die, do not allow yourself to do anything against your conscience. The more decisively you do this, the more powerful your conscience will become, the more fully and powerfully it will inspire you with what you should and deviate you from what you should not - both in deeds, and in words, and in thoughts - and your inner self will be more quickly put in order. Conscience with reverent memory of God is the beating key of true spiritual life. Remember what was said about the spirit at the beginning of our conversation 8 . We must work and, most importantly, not give in to anything to please ourselves or the world. There will be constant resistance to the established order. We must overcome them, therefore, strain our strength and, therefore, endure. Put on this all-powerful weapon and never lose heart when you see failures. Everything will come in time. Be encouraged in patience by this hope. That this happens is justified by the experiences of all people who sought and achieved salvation. So that's it!
