(Phil. 4, 10–23; Luke 7, 36–50) Why did it happen that Simon the Pharisee honors the Lord and invites Him to himself, but immediately seeing that He graciously allows a sinner to come to Him, he is tempted and begins to think: “if only He were a prophet...” (Luke 7:39)? Because he was busy with food and in the midst of his troubles abandoned sound reasoning about the orders of God. These two areas, everyday and spiritual, are not at all similar in their properties and laws. Meanwhile, our mind, when it is very busy, begins to judge according to the laws of that. According to everyday rules, it is impossible to have communication with an obvious sinner; Simon judges this way, forgetting that repentance makes everyone clean and equals sinners with the righteous. He thinks that the sinner should not be here, and that the Savior, if he does not drive her away, is probably because he does not know who she is; from this thought another thought was immediately born: if he does not know, then what kind of prophet is he? In a word, he did not say this, but only thought, and outwardly no change occurred either in him or in his efforts as a good master, but the Lord saw his heart and admonished him according to his heart. He inspired him that sinners have a place near Him and that the sinner, who had her heart attached to Him, honored Him more than he, who honored Him only with a treat. The external leads a person into a feeling of righteousness that is unpleasant to the Lord, but the internal always keeps him in the feelings of his own indecency in the face of the omniscient Lord.
