(Eph. 2, 19–3, 7; Mark 11, 11–23) The fig tree, covered with leaves, was beautiful in appearance, but did not receive approval from the Lord, because there were no fruits on it, and there were no fruits because there was no internal fertile power. How many such fig trees are there in the moral sense! Everything looks fine, but there is nothing inside. They are dignified, honest, and do everything Christian, but do not have the spirit of life in Christ Jesus; that is why they have no living fruit; and what is in them only seems to be fruit, but is not. What is the spirit of life in Christ Jesus? To this we say: one thing in him is from the Lord, and the other from us. What is from the Lord is actually fertile spiritual power; and what is from us is only the receiver of this force. Take more care of the latter. Here the root is the feeling that you are perishing and that if it is not the Lord, you will perish: from here throughout your life, in all your deeds and labors, your heart is contrite and humble. Further, since the future is unknown, and there are many enemies and stumbling is possible every minute, then there is fear and trembling in the achievement of salvation and an incessant cry: “Before you weigh destinies, save me” 10. Woe to him who rests on anything other than the Lord; woe to him who labored for anything other than the Lord! Ask yourself, if you have worked in matters that are considered pleasing to God, for whom are you working? If conscience boldly answers: only for the Lord is it good; and if not, then you are building a house on sand. Here are some pointers about a fertile inner spirit. Understand this and other things.
