(1 Cor. 4, 1–5; Matt. 23, 1–12) “The greatest of you shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). The majority is measured according to the word of the Lord, not by birth, not by power, not by the measure of abilities and methods, but by the ability to arrange good for others. Whoever acts more tirelessly and widely in this way is the greatest. Just as in a family the greatest, becoming the greatest, takes to heart the concern for the entire family and places his honor and advantage in this in order to put everyone at ease, to make sure that everyone is happy: so in Christian society, he who wants to be the greatest must take upon himself full concern for the Christian comfort of everyone in the circle in which he is, and in the type of activity that he has chosen for himself. It’s better: give up any thought about the majority, and take heartfelt concern to serve as much as possible for the good of those around you, and you will be greater in the eyes of God, and perhaps in the minds of people. If all the great would make this law of Christ the law of their conscience, what prosperity and contentment would immediately come among us! But the unfortunate thing is that the majority of us soon turn to serving themselves and their interests and are always accompanied by almost a demand to serve themselves, instead of serving others; the conscience is calmed by the proper conduct of official affairs. That is why there are many great ones, but good does not happen among us, and all good institutions do not bring the good that is expected from them. You might be interested in:
