(1 Cor. 4, 9–16; Matt. 17, 14–23) “This generation is driven out only by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21). If this kind is driven out by the prayer and fasting of another person, then even more so it cannot enter into someone who has his own fasting and prayer. Here's the fence! Even though there are an abyss of demons and the whole air is filled with them, they cannot do anything to someone who is protected by prayer and fasting. Fasting is all-round abstinence, prayer is all-round communion with God; that one protects from the outside, and this one from the inside directs an all-fire weapon at the enemies. Demons sense a faster and a man of prayer from afar and run far from him so as not to receive a painful blow. Is it possible to think that where there is no fasting and prayer, there is already a demon? Can. Demons, when they move into a person, do not always reveal their presence, but lurk, secretly teaching their owner all evil and turning them away from all good; so that he is sure that he does everything himself, and meanwhile he only fulfills the will of his enemy. Just take up prayer and fasting - and the enemy will immediately leave and wait on the side for an opportunity to return again, and indeed returns as soon as prayer and fasting are abandoned.
