(Rom. 16, 17–24; Matt. 13, 10–23) Why do many people not understand conversations about spiritual things? Due to thickening of the heart. When the heart is full of attachments to earthly things, then it becomes coarse, as it is said: “weak, thick, wide” 5 (Deut. 32:15). In this form, like a heavy weight, it pulls down and chains the entire soul and its mind to the ground. Then everything revolves in a circle of low objects, and it becomes low-minded and cannot soar grief, like a bird burdened with food. As he rotates, he does not see what is above, and his entire warehouse is disgusting to him... It is a completely unknown country to him. In the sum of his concepts and experiences, he has nothing to which he could apply what was there in order to see it even as a mirror in fortune telling. That is why he neither undertakes to talk about it himself, nor has the desire to listen to others who talk about it, and he will not pick up books in which it is written. Isn’t that why you sometimes find not one secular magazine among many, but not a single spiritual one, not a single spiritual book, not even a Gospel?
