There are three parts to a person: body, soul and spirit. This can be seen from the words of the Mother of God, spoken by her in greeting the righteous Elizabeth: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, My Savior (Luke 1:46-47). Here the division is very clearly visible: one is the spirit, and the other is the soul, and that the body and soul are two different parts is obvious. And notice this sequence: the soul begins to praise the Lord, and from this the spirit comes into joy and begins to rejoice. This applies to every person when he prays or praises God. Prayer begins through the forces of the soul, and the mind listens to the words of the prayer. Then the meaning of the prayer seems to touch the human spirit, and the spirit, forced by the Divine power of prayer, rejoices... Prayer is, firstly, oral, secondly, internal, heartfelt, and thirdly, spiritual. Very few people have inner prayer of the heart, and those who have spiritual prayer are even rarer. Spiritual prayer is incomparably higher than internal heartfelt prayer. Those who have it begin to learn the secrets of nature, they look at everything from the inside, comprehend the meaning of things, and not their external side. They are constantly overwhelmed by high spiritual delight, tenderness, their eyes often shed tears. Their delight is incomprehensible to us. The delight of the greatest artists accessible to us, in comparison with their spiritual delight, is nothing, for it is more spiritual. You might be interested in:
