О тщеславии и смирении

Vanity comes from a lack of humility. No amount of sorrow will defeat a humble person, because, in humility, he finds that for his sins he is worthy of even greater punishment. The humble man is likened to a man who built his house on a rock: and the rain came, and the rivers overflowed, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock (Matthew 7:25). And this stone is humility. A vain person is like a man who built his house on sand without a foundation. And the rain fell, and the rivers overflowed, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and he fell, and his fall was great (Matthew 7:27). Let us humble ourselves before God, put a small brick into the foundation of our house, that is, the desire to improve, and the Lord Himself will save us according to His ineffable goodness.
