About the Eight Evil Spirits (TSS)

The treatise “On the Eight Evil Spirits” (8 chapters, 383-393, Egypt) is attributed in most Greek manuscripts to St. Nile of Sinai, but in some Greek and in all Syrian and Ethiopian manuscripts it is listed as the creation of Evagrius of Pontus. The essay describes in figurative form 8 main sinful thoughts: gluttony, fornication, love of money, sadness, anger, despondency, vanity and pride. This publication presents a translation made at the Moscow Theological Academy in the series “Creations of the Holy Fathers.” *The title of the work in Greek is Περ τῶν ὀκτὼ πνευμάτων τῆς πονηρίας. *The title of the work in Latin is De octo spiritibus malitiae.
