Евангелие от Иоанна
Machine translation from the original · Show original
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was to God, and the Word was God.
everything came to be through Him, and without Him nothing came to be that happened.
In Him was life, and life was the light of men;
and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.
there was a man sent from God; his name is John;
he came as a witness, that he may testify of the Light, that all may believe through him.
He was not light, but let him testify to the Light.
There was true light, enlightening every person coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world came into being from Him, and the world did not know Him;
He came to his own, and his own did not receive Him.
And to those who received Him, He gave the power to become children of God, who believe in His name,
not of blood, nor of the lust of the flesh, nor of the lust of man, but born of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father.
John testifies of Him and, crying out, says: This is He, of whom I spoke, that He who would come after me has become before me, having been before me.
And from His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace;
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came from Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God; The Only Begotten Son, Who is in the bosom of the Father, He confessed.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who are you?
He declared, and did not deny, and confessed: I am not Christ.
And they asked him: what then? Are you Elijah? He said no. Are you a prophet? He answered: no.
They said: who are you? so that we can give an answer to those who sent us: what can you say about yourself?
And he said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: straighten the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said (Is. 40:3).
And those who were sent were from the Pharisees;
and they asked and said to him: Why are you baptizing if you are not Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet?
John answered and said to them: I baptize with water, but there stands among you whom you do not know;
He is the One who is coming after me, but He was before me, and of Him I am not worthy to untie the thong of His boot.
It was in Bethabara, on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
In the morning John sees Jesus coming to him and says: Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world;
This is the one of whom I said: A man comes after me, who stood before me, who was before me;
and I did not know Him, but that He might appear to Israel, for this reason I came to baptize with water.
And John testified, saying: I saw the Spirit descend from heaven in the form of a dove, and abide on Him;
I did not know Him; but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me: On whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He baptizes with the Holy Spirit;
and I saw and testified that this is the Son of God.
The next morning John and two of his disciples stood again.
And when he saw Jesus coming, he said, Behold the Lamb of God.
And they heard what he said. both disciples and followed Jesus.
And Jesus turned and saw them walking after Him, and He said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to Him: Rabbi! (what does teacher mean!) where do you live?
He says to them: come and you will see. They went and saw where He lived; and remained with Him that day. It was about ten o'clock.
Now there was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, one of both who heard from John and followed Jesus.
He first finds his brother Simon and says to him: we have found the Messiah (which means: Christ).
And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of Jonah; you will be called Cephas (which means: Peter - stone).
In the morning Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him: follow me.
Philip was from Bethsaida, from the city of Andreev and Petrov.
Philip finds Nathanael and says to him: We have found Him about whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote, Jesus, the son of Joseph, of Nazareth.
And Nathanael said to him: Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him: come and see.
Jesus sees Nathanael coming to Him and says about him: Behold, truly an Israelite, in him there is no guile.
Nathanael says to Him: How do You know me? Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you when you were under the fig tree.”
Answering, Nathanael said to Him: Rabbi! You are the Son of God, You are the King of Israel.
Jesus answered and said to him, “You believe, because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree; but you will see more than this.
And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, from here on you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
And on the third day the marriage took place in Cana of Galilee, and the Mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and His disciples were called to marriage.
And when there was not enough wine, His Mother said to Jesus: They have no wine.
Jesus says to Her: What do I and You have, Woman? My hour has not yet come.
And the Mother said to His servants: whatever He tells you, do it.
There were six stone waterpots there, standing for the usual purification of the Jews, containing two or three measures.
Jesus says to them: Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them to the top.
And he says to them: now draw it and bring it to the architricline. And they carried it away.
When the architriclinus tasted the wine that came from the water (and he did not know where it came from; the servants who drew the water knew): then the architriclinian calls the groom
and he says to him: Every person first offers good wine, and when they get drunk, then worse; and you have kept the good wine hitherto.
Thus Jesus began the signs in Cana of Galilee and revealed His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
After this He came to Capernaum, Himself and His Mother, and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there for a few days.
The Passover of the Jews was approaching, and Jesus came to Jerusalem;
and he found in the church those selling sheep and oxen and doves, and money changers sitting there.
And, having made a scourge of ropes, he drove everyone out of the church, both sheep and oxen; and he scattered coins among the traders and overturned their tables;
and he said to those who sold doves, “Take this from here, and do not make My Father’s house a house of purchase.”
And His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for Your house consumes Me (Ps. 68:10).
And the Jews said back to Him: What sign will You show us that You have the power to do this?
Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this church, and in three days I will raise it up.
The Jews said: It took forty-six years to build this church, and will You raise it up in three days?
But He spoke about the church of His Body.
And when He rose from the dead, His disciples remembered what He had said, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
And when He was in Jerusalem on the feast of Passover, many, seeing the signs He did, believed in His name.
But Jesus Himself did not entrust Himself to them, since He Himself knew everyone,
and there was no need for anyone to testify about the man; for He Himself knew what was in man.
There was a man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, one of the leaders of the Jews;
he came to Jesus at night and said to Him: Rabbi! I know that You have come from God, Teacher; for no one can do such signs as You do, unless God is with him.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to Him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he really enter his mother’s womb another time and be born?
Jesus answered: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God;
that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Do not be surprised that I said to you, you must be born again.
The Spirit breathes where it wants, and you hear its voice, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered Him: How can this be?
Jesus answered and said to him: You are the teacher of Israel, and do you not know this?
Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and we testify of what we have seen; but you do not accept Our testimony.
If I told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
And no one ascended into heaven, only the Son of Man who came down from heaven, who is in heaven;
and as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,
Let everyone who believes in Him not perish, but receive eternal life.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but receive eternal life.
For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but through Him the world may be saved.
He who believes in Him will not be condemned, but he who does not believe is already condemned, for he did not believe in the name of the Only Begotten Son of God.
This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world; and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed, for they are evil;
and whoever creates the truth comes to the light, so that his deeds may be exposed, since they were done in God.
And after this Jesus and His disciples came to the land of Judea, and there he lived with them and baptized.
John also baptized in Aenon, near Salim, since there was a lot of water there; and they came there and were baptized;
for John was not yet imprisoned.
And John's disciples had a dispute with the Jews about cleansing;
and they came to John and said to him: Rabbi! The One who was with you on the other side of the Jordan and to whom you witnessed, behold He baptizes, and everyone comes to Him.
John answered and said: A man cannot accept anything unless it is given to him from heaven.
You yourselves are my witnesses that I said: I am not Christ, but sent before Him.
He who has a bride is a groom, and the groom’s friend stands and listens to him, and rejoices with joy, hearing the voice of the grooms; this joy of mine is fulfilled;
It is fitting for him to increase, and for me to decrease.
He who comes from above is above all; He who is from the earth is earthly, and speaks earthly things. He who comes from heaven is above all;
what he saw and heard testifies to it; and no one accepts His testimony.
And whoever accepted His testimony, thereby assured that God is true.
And whom God has sent, He speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit beyond measure.
The Father loves the Son and has given everything into His hand.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; and whoever does not believe in the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
When Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard, that Jesus was making more disciples and baptizing than John;
(but Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples did);
He left Judea and went again to Galilee.
He had to pass through Samaria.
So He comes to the city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the weight given by Jacob to his son Joseph;
Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, weary from the journey, sat down by the fountain; it was about six o'clock.
A woman comes from Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her: Give me something to drink.
(For His disciples went into the city to buy food.)
The Samaritan's wife said to Him: How can You, being a Jew, ask me, the Samaritan, for a drink, when Jews do not communicate with Samaritans?
Jesus answered and said to her: If you had known the gift of God, and Who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.
The wife says to Him: Master! You have not even drawn, but the student is deep; where will you get living water from?
are you greater than our father Jacob? he gave us this jelly, and he himself, and his children, and his cattle drank from it.
Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
but whoever drinks of the water that I give him will never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.
His wife said to Him: Master! Give me this water, so that I don’t thirst and don’t come here to draw.
Jesus says to her: Go, call your husband, and come here.
The wife answered: I don’t have a husband. Jesus says to her: It’s good that you said that you don’t have a husband;
You have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband; it's the truth you said.
The wife says to Him: Lord! I see that You are a prophet;
our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where one should worship.
Jesus says to her: Believe Me, wife, the hour is near when you will worship the Father, neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem;
you worship without knowing what; we worship, knowing what we worship, for salvation is from the Jews;
but the hour is coming, and has already come, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father also seeks such as those who worship Him.
God is spirit: and whoever worships Him must worship in spirit and in truth.
His wife said to Him: I know that the Messiah, the spoken Christ, will come; when He comes, He will tell us everything.
Jesus says to her: It is I who speaks to you.
At this time His disciples came and were amazed that He was talking to his wife; however, not one said: Why are you asking? or: what are you talking to her about?
And the wife left her waterpot and went into the city and said to the people:
come, see a man, who told me everything that I did: is not this the Christ?
They left the city and went to Him.
Meanwhile, the disciples asked Him, saying: Rabbi! eat.
But He said to them: I have food such as you do not know.
And the disciples said among themselves: Who brought Him anything to eat?
Jesus said to them: My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
Don't you say that there are still four months and the harvest will come? And I say to you: lift up your eyes and look at the fields, how they are white and ripe for harvest;
he who reaps receives his reward and gathers fruit into eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together;
and the true saying about this is that one sows and another reaps;
I sent you to reap where you did not labor: others labored, and you entered into their labor.
And from that city many Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman, who testified that He told her everything that she did.
So, when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
And many more believed because of His word;
and they said to the wife: We no longer believe because of your conversation, for we ourselves have heard and know that He is truly the Savior of the world, Christ.
Two days later He left there and went to Galilee;
Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
When He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, seeing everything that He had done in Jerusalem on the feast; They also went to the holiday.
And Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where he turned water into wine. And there was a certain courtier there, whose son was sick in Capernaum.
This man, having heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, went to Him and begged Him to come and heal his son, who was dying.
Jesus said to him: If you do not see signs and wonders, you do not have faith.
The courtier says to Him: Lord! come before my son dies.
Jesus said to him: Go, your son lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and he went.
And already on the road his servants met him and said, “Your son is alive.”
And he asked them: at what time did he feel better? And they said to him: Yesterday at seven o’clock his fever left him.
And the father realized that it was the hour when Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he and his whole house believed.
Jesus performed this second sign again, having already crossed from Judea to Galilee.
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus came to Jerusalem.
There is also a pool in Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate, called Bethesda in Hebrew, 16 and there are five porches:
in them lay many sick, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the movement of water;
for the Angel of the Lord from time to time went into the pool and troubled the water; and whoever was the first to enter there when the water was stirred recovered, no matter what illness he was suffering from.
There was a man here who had been ill for thirty-eight years with his illness.
Jesus, seeing him lying down and realizing that he had been lying sick for a long time, said to him: Do you want to be healthy?
The sick man answered Him: Yes, Lord; there is no one who could lower me into the font when the water is troubled; when I come, another will rise before me.
Jesus says to him: get up, take up your bed and walk.
And immediately the man became healthy, and took up his bed and walked. And that day was Saturday.
Therefore the Jews said to the healed man: Today is the Sabbath; You must not take your bed.
He answered them: He who healed me said to me: take up your bed and walk.
They asked him: Who is the Man who said to you, Take up your bed and walk?
The healed one did not know who He was; for Jesus was hidden among the people that were in that place.
Then Jesus finds him in the church and says to him: behold, you have become healthy; Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you.
The man went and told the Jews that the one who healed him was Jesus.
And for this reason the Jews began to persecute Jesus and sought to kill Him because He did such things on the Sabbath.
Jesus answered and said to them: My Father is working hitherto, and I am working.
And for this reason the Jews also sought to kill Him, because He not only destroyed the Sabbath, but also called God His Father, making Himself equal to God.
To this Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son cannot do anything by Himself if He does not see the Father doing it; for whatever He does, the Son also does likewise.
For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything that He Himself does; and he will show Him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.
Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so the Son also gives life to whomever He wills.
For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son;
let everyone honor the Son as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has eternal life; and will not come to judgment, but will pass from death to life.
Truly, truly, I say to you, the time is coming, and has already come, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and having heard it they will live.
For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son to have life in Himself;
and gave Him power and judgment to do, because He is the Son of man.
Do not marvel at this; for the time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear the voice of the Son of God;
and those who have done good will come forth into the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil into the resurrection of judgment.
I cannot create anything on My own. As I hear, I judge, and My judgment is righteous; For I do not seek My will, but the will of the Father who sent Me.
If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not true;
there is another who testifies about Me; and I know that the testimony that testifies about Me is true;
you sent to John, and he testified to the truth.
But I do not accept testimony from man; but I say this so that you may be saved.
He was a lamp, burning and shining; and you wanted to rejoice in the hour of its shining.
But I have a testimony greater than John’s; the works that the Father has given me to do, these are the works that I do. They testify of Me that the Father sent Me.
And the Father who sent Me Himself testified of Me; but you have neither heard His voice nor seen His face,
and you do not have His word abiding in you; because you do not believe Him whom He sent.
Search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and they testify of Me.
But you do not want to come to Me to have life.
I don’t accept fame from people;
but I know you that you do not have love for God in yourself.
I have come in the name of My Father, and you do not receive Me; If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
How can you believe, receiving glory from each other, but not seeking the glory that is from the One God?
Do not imagine that I will accuse you before the Father; Moses is your accuser; your trust is in vain.
If you had believed Moses, you would have believed Me, for he wrote about Me.
If you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?
After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Tiberias in Galilee;
and a multitude of people followed Him, because they saw His signs that He did on the sick.
And Jesus went up onto the mountain and sat there with His disciples.
Passover, the Jewish holiday, was already approaching.
And Jesus lifting up his eyes and seeing that a multitude of people were coming to Him, said to Philip: Where can we buy bread to feed them?
But he said this, testing him; for He Himself knew what He wanted to do.
Philip answered Him: There will not be enough bread for two hundred pennies, so that each of them gets a little.
One of His disciples, Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, said to Him:
Here one youth has five barley loaves and two fish; but what is this for such a multitude?
And Jesus said, Command the people to lie down. There was a lot of grass in that place, and about five thousand people sat down.
Jesus, having taken the loaves and given praise, handed over to the disciples, and the disciples to those reclining also handed over the fish, as much as anyone wanted.
And when they were satisfied, he said to his disciples: gather up the remaining pieces so that nothing is lost.
And they gathered and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves that were left over from the people who had eaten.
And the people who saw the sign that Jesus did said: This is truly the Prophet who comes into the world.
Jesus, realizing that they wanted to come to capture Him and make Him king, again withdrew to the mountain alone.
When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea
and, entering the ship, they sailed to the other side of the sea, to Capernaum. It was already dark; but Jesus had not yet come to them.
The sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing.
Having sailed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea near the ship, and they were afraid.
But He said to them: It is I, do not be afraid.
Then they wanted to take Him into the ship, and immediately the ship landed on the shore where they were sailing.
In the morning, the people standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other ship there, except for one ship into which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus did not enter the ship with His disciples, but only His disciples sailed away;
Meanwhile, other ships came from Tiberias close to the place where they ate bread, with the blessing of the Lord;
and so, when the people saw that Jesus and His disciples were not there, they themselves got into ships and sailed to Capernaum, looking for Jesus,
and having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him: Rabbi! when did you come here?
Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the sign, but because you ate the bread and were filled;
do not seek food that perishes, but food that endures to eternal life; the Son of man will give you one; for His Father signified, God.
They said to Him: What must we do to do the works of God?
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God; believe in Him whom He sent.
To this they said to Him: What sign will You do, so that we may see and believe You? What are you doing?
our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat (Ps. 77:24; Exod. 16:4–15).
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.”
for the bread of God comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
To this they said to Him: Lord, always give us such bread.
Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.
But I told you that you have seen Me and do not believe.
Whatever the Father gives Me will come to Me; and whoever comes to Me I will not cast out;
for I came down from heaven, not to do My will, but the will of the Father who sent Me;
This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that I may not destroy anything that He has given Me, but raise everything up on the last day;
and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may receive eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
And the Jews murmured against Him because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,”
and they said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?” How then does He say: I came down from heaven?
Jesus answered and said to them, Do not murmur among yourselves:
no one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
It is written in the prophets: and they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to Me (Is. 54:13).
Not that anyone has seen the Father except He who is from God; He saw the Father.
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me has eternal life.
your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and died;
This bread that comes down from heaven, let no one who eats of it die;
I am the bread of life that came down from heaven; Whoever eats of this bread will live forever, but the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Then the Jews began to argue among themselves, saying: How can He give us His flesh to eat?
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.”
He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
For My Flesh is truly food, and My Blood is truly drink.
He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood abides in Me, and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live for the Father’s sake, so he who eats Me will live for My sake.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers ate manna and died: whoever eats this bread will live forever.
These things He spoke in the synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
Many of His disciples, hearing this, said: This word is cruel! who can listen to Him!
But Jesus, knowing within Himself that His disciples were grumbling about this, said to them: Is this tempting you?
what, when will you see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?
the spirit gives life; the flesh does not benefit at all; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life;
but there are others among you who do not believe. For from the beginning Jesus knew who the unbelievers were and who would betray Him.
And he said: For this reason I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is given to him from My Father.
And from this many of His disciples departed completely and no longer walked with Him.
Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
Simon Peter answered Him: Lord! who shall we go to? You have the words of eternal life,
and we have believed and known that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you twelve, and one of you is the devil?”
He said this about Judas Simon Iscariot; for this one was about to betray Him, being one of the twelve.
After this Jesus walked in Galilee; But he did not want to go to Judea, for the Jews were looking to kill Him.
The Jewish holiday was approaching; setting up tabernacles.
Then His brothers said to Him: get out of here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples may see the works You are doing;
no one does anything in secret, but seeks to be revealed; if You do such things, reveal Yourself to the world.
For even His brothers did not believe in Him.
And Jesus said to them: My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready;
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me, for I testify about it that its deeds are evil;
you are going to this holiday, but I am not going to this holiday yet; My time is not yet fulfilled.
Having told them this, he remained in Galilee.
But when His brethren came to the feast, then He also came not openly, but as if secretly.
The Jews looked for Him at the festival and said: Where is He?
There was much discord among the people about Him; some said that He is good; and others said: no, but he deceives the people.
However, no one spoke about Him openly, fearing the Jews.
But already at half-time of the holiday, Jesus entered the church and taught.
And the Jews marveled, saying, How does he know the books without having studied?
Jesus answered and said to them: My teaching is not Mine, but that of Him who sent Me;
whoever wants to do His will will understand about the teaching, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from Myself.
He who speaks for himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of Him who sent Him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Didn't Moses give you the law? and none of you keeps the law. Why are you seeking to kill Me?
The people answered Him and said, “Aren’t You a devil?” who seeks to kill you?
Jesus answered them and said: I have done one thing, and you all marvel.
For this reason Moses gave you circumcision (it was not from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man;
If a person receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses will not be destroyed, are you angry with Me because I healed the whole person on the Sabbath?
Do not judge by appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.
Then some of the Jerusalemites began to say: Isn’t this the one whom they are looking to kill?
Behold, He speaks without hesitation, and they say nothing to Him: have not the rulers realized that He is truly the Christ?
but we know Him where He comes from; But when Christ comes, no one knows where He comes from.
And Jesus cried out, teaching in the church, and said, “You know Me, and you know where I come from; and I did not come from Myself, but He who sent Me is true, Whom you do not know;
I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.
And they sought to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him; for His hour has not yet come.
Many of the people believed in Him and said: when Christ comes, will He really do greater signs than He does?
The Pharisees heard such talk about Him among the people, and the Pharisees and the high priests sent servants to arrest Him.
Jesus said: It is yet a little time for Me to be with you, and I am going to Him who sent Me;
look for Me and you will not find; and where I am, you cannot come there.
The Jews said among themselves: Where does He want to go, that we will not find Him? Is it not that the Greeks want to go into dispersion and teach the Greeks?
What does this word mean, that He said: You will look for Me and will not find it; and where am I, you cannot come there?
On the last day of the great feast Jesus stood and cried, saying: If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink;
Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow out of his belly (Is.12:3; Joel.3:18).
This He said about the Spirit, which those who believed in Him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet upon them, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Many of the people, hearing this word, said: He is truly a prophet.
Others said: This is Christ. But others said: Does Christ come from Galilee?
Doesn't the Scripture say that from the seed of David and from the weight of Bethlehem, where David was, Christ comes?
There was dissension among the people for His sake.
Some of them wanted to seize Him; but no one laid hands on Him.
And the servants returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them: Why did you not bring Him?
The servants answered: Never has a man spoken like this Man.
The Pharisees answered them: Have you also been deceived?
did any of the rulers believe in Him, or any of the Pharisees?
but this people are ignorant of the law; they are cursed.
Nicodemus, who came to Him at night and was also among them, said to them:
Does our law judge a person before they listen to him and understand what he does?
To this they answered him: “Are you not from Galilee?” look and you will see that the prophet does not come from Galilee.
And they all went home.
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives;
In the morning he came again to the church, and all the people went to Him, and He sat down and taught them.
The scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a wife caught in adultery and, placing her in the midst,
They said to Him: Teacher! this wife is now in adultery;
and Moses in the law commanded us to stone such people: What do you say?
They said this, tempting Him, to find something to accuse Him of. But Jesus, bending down, wrote on the ground with his finger, not heeding them.
When they came to ask Him, He bowed down and said to them: He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.
And again, bending down, he wrote on the ground.
Having heard it, they began, convicted by their conscience, to leave one by one, starting from the elders to the last; and only Jesus remained and the woman standing in the middle.
Jesus, standing up and not seeing anyone but his wife, said to her: “Woman!” where are your accusers? no one judged you?
She said: no one, Lord! Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.
And Jesus spoke to them again, and said: I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
The Pharisees said to Him: You bear witness to Yourself; Your testimony is not true.
Jesus answered and said to them: If I testify of Myself, My testimony is true; for I know where I came from and where I am going; You don’t know where I come from and where I’m going;
you judge according to the flesh, I judge no one;
and even if I judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me;
and in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true (Deut. 19:15);
I bear witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.
Then they said to Him: Where is Your Father? Jesus answered: You know neither Me nor My Father; If they knew Me, they would also know My Father.
Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, teaching in the church, and no one took Him, for His hour had not yet come.
Again Jesus said to them: I am going away, and you will seek Me and die in your sin; where I go, you cannot come.
And the Jews said, Will He not kill Himself any more, for He says, Where I go, you cannot come?
He said to them: You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world;
That’s why I told you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am, you will die in your sins.
Then they said to Him: Who are You? Jesus said to them: I am the beginning, just as I tell you;
I have a lot to say and judge about you; but He who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him, these I speak to the world.
They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
Then Jesus said to them: When you lift up the Son of man, then you will understand that this is I, and of myself I do nothing; but as My Father taught Me, so I speak;
and He who sent Me is with Me: the Father has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.
When He spoke thus, many believed in Him.
Jesus said to the Jews who believed in Him: If you continue in My word, you will be My disciples truly,
and you will understand the truth, and the truth will set you free.
And they objected to Him: we are Abraham’s seed and have never been slaves to anyone; How then do You say: You will become free?
Jesus answered them: Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin;
but the servant does not remain in the house forever; but the son remains forever;
Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed;
I know that you are Abraham’s seed, but you seek to kill Me, because My word does not fit within you;
I say that I have seen with My Father; But what you saw with your father, do it.
They answered Him: Our father Abraham. Jesus said to them: If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham;
but now you seek to kill Me, the Man who told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.
You do the works of your father. To this they said to Him: We were not born of fornication; We have one Father, God.
But Jesus said to them: If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded and came from God; I did not come from Myself, but He sent Me;
Why don’t you understand My conversation? because you cannot listen to My word;
you want to do things from your father's devil and your father's lust; he was a murderer from time immemorial and does not stand in the truth, for there is no truth in him; when he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, for he is a lie and the father of lies;
But when I speak the truth, you do not believe Me;
Which of you will convict Me of sin? If I speak the truth, why don’t you believe Me?
He who is from God listens to the words of God; That's why you don't listen, because you are not from God.
The Jews answered this and said to Him: Are we not right in saying that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?
Jesus answered: There is no demon in Me; but I honor My Father, but you do not honor Me;
But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges;
Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.
The Jews said to Him: Now we have realized that you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets; But You say: If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death;
Are You greater than our father Abraham? he died and the prophets died; how do you create yourself?
Jesus answered: if I glorify Myself. My glory is nothing; The Father glorifies Me, of whom you say that He is your God;
but you did not know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be like you, a lie; but I know Him, and I keep His word.
Abraham your father would have rejoiced to see My day; and he saw and rejoiced.
Then the Jews said to Him: You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Then they took stones to throw at Him; Jesus hid himself and left the church, passing through the midst of them; and so he left them.
And as he passed, he saw a man blind from birth.
And His disciples asked Him: Rabbi! Who sinned, this one or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered: Neither this one has sinned, nor his parents, but let the works of God be revealed in him;
It is fitting for me to do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night comes when no one can do;
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
Having said this, he spat on the ground and made clay from the spitting, and anointed the eyes of the blind man with clay,
and he said to him: Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which means: sent). He went and washed, and came back seeing.
Then the neighbors and those who had seen him before, that he was blind, said: Isn’t this the one who sat and begged?
Others said: this is he; and others that look like him. He said: this is me.
Then they asked him: How were your eyes opened?
He answered and said, The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam and wash. And I went, washed and received my sight.
They say to him: where is that man? He answered: I don’t know.
They took him, who was formerly blind, to the Pharisees.
And it was the Sabbath on the day that Jesus created the clay and opened his eyes.
And again the Pharisees asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes; I washed my face and I see.
Then some of the Pharisees said: This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath. And others said: how can a sinful man perform such signs? And they had a quarrel.
And they say to the blind man again: What will you say about Him, that He opened your eyes? He said: this is a prophet.
But the Jews did not believe about him that he was blind, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight.
and they asked them, saying: Is this your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? How can he see now?
His parents answered them and said: We know that this son is ours and that he was born blind;
but how he sees now, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know; the age itself has, ask yourself; Let him speak about himself.
His parents said so because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews have already agreed that anyone who recognizes Him as Christ will be excommunicated from the synagogue;
That's why his parents said: he has his own age, ask yourself.
They called the second man who was blind, and said to him: Give praise to God; we know that man is a sinner.
He answered and said to them, “Whether He is a sinner, I don’t know; One thing I know is that I was blind, but now I see.
They asked him again: What did He do to you? How did you open your eyes?
He answered them: I already told you, and you did not listen; what else do you want to hear? or do you also want to become His disciples?
They reproached him and said: you are His disciple, and we are Moses’ disciples;
we know that God spoke to Moses; We don’t know where He comes from.
And the man answered them, “It’s amazing that you don’t know where He comes from, but He opened my eyes;
we know that God will not listen to sinners, but whoever is a reader of God and does His will will listen to him;
Since the beginning of time it has not been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind;
If He were not from God, He could not have created anything.
They answered him: You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us? And they cast him out.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
He answered and said: Who is He, Lord, that I should believe in Him?
Jesus said to him: And you have seen Him, and He speaks to you.
He said: I believe, Lord! And he bowed to Him.
And Jesus said: I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.
When some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, they said to Him, “Are we also blind?”
And Jesus said to them: If you were blind, you would have no sin; Now say what you see, and your sin abides.
Truly, truly, I say to you, anyone who does not enter by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs over somewhere else, is a thief and a robber,
and the shepherd who enters by the door eats the sheep:
the doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his sheep by name and leads them out;
and when he has led out his sheep, he walks before them, and the sheep follow him, they know his voice;
They will not follow a stranger, but will run from him, because they do not know someone else’s voice.
Jesus spoke this parable to them; but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Jesus said to them again: Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep;
all, no matter how many of them came before Me, were thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the door: By Me whoever enters will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
The thief does not come except to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may receive life, and that they may receive the abundance.
I am the good shepherd; The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep!
but a hireling is not a shepherd, and his sheep are not his own; sees a wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and runs; and the wolf will plunder them, and scatter the sheep;
but the hireling flees, because he is a hireling, and neglects the sheep.
I am the good shepherd; and I know Mine, and Mine know Me;
as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
And I have other sheep that are not from this fold, and these it is fitting for Me to bring; and they will hear My voice, and there will be one flock and one Shepherd.
For this reason the Father loves Me, that I lay down My soul, that I may receive it again;
no one will take it from Me, but I deliver it from Myself; I have power to betray her, and I have power to receive her again. I received this commandment from My Father.
Because of these words, strife occurred again among the Jews.
Many of them said: He is possessed by a demon and is raging; Why are you listening to Him?
Others said: these are not the words of a demoniac; Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?
At that time there was a feast of renewal in Jerusalem, and it was winter.
And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
The Jews surrounded Him here and said to Him: How long will You disturb our souls? if you are the Christ, tell us without hesitation.
Jesus answered them: I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in the name of My Father testify of Me;
but you do not believe because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you;
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
and I will give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father has given to Me, and He is more than all; and no one can snatch them out of the hand of My Father.
And again the Jews took up the stones to beat Him.
Jesus answered them: I have shown you many good works from My Father; Why are you throwing stones at Me?
The Jews answered Him: We do not throw stones at You for a good deed, but for the blasphemy that You, being a man, make Yourself God.
Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your law: I said: you are gods? (Ps. 81:6).
If he called those gods to whom the word of God was spoken, and the Scripture cannot be destroyed;
How can you say to Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world: You are blaspheming, when I said that I am the Son of God?
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
and if I do, then when you do not believe Me, believe My works; then you will understand and believe that the Father is in Me and I in Him.
Here again they wanted to seize Him; but He escaped from their hands,
and he went again beyond the Jordan, to the place where John had previously baptized; and stayed there.
Many came to Him and said that John had not performed a single sign; but everything that John said about Him was true.
And many there believed in Him.
A certain Lazarus was sick from Bethany, from the village of Mary and Martha, her sister.
It was Mary who anointed the Lord with myrrh and wiped His feet with her hair: it was through her that brother Lazarus was sick.
And the sisters sent to Him to say: Lord! behold, the one you love is in pain.
But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness is not for death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified for its sake.”
Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
And when I heard that he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.
And then he said to the disciples: Let us go again to Judea.
The disciples said to Him: Rabbi! The Jews were just looking to stone you to stone you, and are you going there again?
Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours in the day? whoever walks by day will not stumble, for he sees the light of this world;
but whoever walks at night stumbles, because there is no light in him.
Having said this, he then said to them: Our friend Lazarus fell asleep; but I’m going to wake him up.
His disciples said: Lord! if he falls asleep, he will recover.
But Jesus spoke of his death; they thought that he was talking about an ordinary dream.
Then Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead;
and I rejoice for you that I was not there, so that you might believe; but let's go to him.
Then Thomas, called the Twin, said to the disciples: Let us go and die with Him.
When Jesus arrived, he found that he had already been in the tomb for four days.
Bethany was near Jerusalem, fifteen stages away 17.
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to console them in their sorrow about their brother.
Martha, hearing that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him; Maria was sitting at home.
Then Martha said to Jesus: Lord! if You had been here, my brother would not have died;
but even now I know that whatever You ask God, God will give You.
Jesus says to her: Your brother will rise again.
Martha said to Him: I know that He will rise again on the resurrection, on the last day.
Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Me, even if he dies, will live;
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?
He says to Him: Yes, Lord! I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, coming into the world.
Having said this, she went and secretly called Mary, her sister, saying to her: The Teacher has come and is calling you.
As soon as she heard, she immediately got up and went to Him.
(Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was at the place where Martha met Him.)
The Jews who were with her in the house and consoled her, seeing that Mary hastily got up and left, followed her, saying that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him: Lord! If you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But Jesus, when he saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her weeping, was grieved in spirit and was indignant Himself,
and said: Where did they put it? They say to Him: Lord, come and look.
Then the Jews began to say: Look how He loved him.
And some of them said: Couldn’t He, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have ensured that even this one would not die?
Jesus, again falling within Himself, comes to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was placed on it.
Jesus says: take away the stone. The sister of the deceased, Martha, said to Him: Lord! already stinks; for four days have passed.
Jesus said to her: Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?
And they took away the stone where the dead man lay. Jesus, lifting up his eyes to the mountain, said: Father! I give You praise because You heard Me;
and I knew that you would always hear Me; But for the sake of the people standing around, I said, that they may believe that You have sent Me.
And having said this, he cried out with a great voice: Lazarus! get out.
And the dead man came out, wrapped hand and foot in swaddling clothes, and his face bound with a cloth. Jesus says to them: Untie him and leave him to go.
Then many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus had done believed in Him;
and some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
The chief priests and Pharisees gathered together a council and said: what should we do? This man does many signs;
if we leave Him like this, everyone will believe in Him; and the Romans will come and take possession of both our place and our people.
One of them, a certain Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them: you know nothing,
and do not you think that it is better for us for one person to die for the people than for the whole people to perish.
He did not say this on his own, but, being the high priest of that year, he predicted that Jesus had to die for the people,
and not only for the people, but so that the scattered children of God might be gathered into one.
And from that day they decided to kill Him.
Therefore, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to a country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and stayed there with His disciples.
The Passover of the Jews was approaching, and many from that country came to Jerusalem before Passover to cleanse themselves.
Then they looked for Jesus and, standing in the church, said to each other: What do you think? won't He come to the festival?
The high priests and Pharisees gave orders that whoever knew where He was should let him know. to take Him.
Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was. the dead whom He raised from the dead.
They prepared a supper for Him there, and Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him.
Mary, taking a liter of spikenard, pure, precious ointment, anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair; and the church was filled with the fragrance of the fragrant ointment.
Then one of His disciples, Judas Simon Iscariot, the one who wanted to betray Him, said:
Why not sell this ointment for three hundred pennies and give it to the poor?
He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and he carried with him in a cash box that they put it there.
Jesus said: Leave her alone; she will keep it on the day of my burial;
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.
Many people from the Jews learned that He was here, and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but to see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead.
The chief priests took counsel to kill Lazarus also,
because for his sake many of the Jews came and believed in Jesus.
The next day, a large crowd that came to the feast, hearing that Jesus was going to Jerusalem,
They took date branches and came out to meet Him, exclaiming: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!
Jesus found a donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion! Behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey's foal (Zechariah 9:9).
His disciples did not understand this before; but when Jesus became glorified, then they remembered that thus it was written about Him, and thus they did to Him.
And the people who were formerly with Him testified of Him, when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead;
This is why the people met Him because they heard Him perform this sign.
The Pharisees said to each other: You see that we do not have time to do anything, behold, the world follows Him.
There were some Greeks who came to worship on the feast;
They approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying: Master! we want to see Jesus.
Philip goes and says to Andrew; and then Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Jesus answered them, “The hour has come that the Son of man may be glorified.”
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; and if he dies, he will bear much fruit.
He who loves his life will destroy it, and he who hates his soul in this world will save it to eternal life.
Whoever serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there will my servant also be. And if anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him.
Now My soul is troubled; and what will I say? Father! save Me from this hour! but for this reason I came to this hour.
Father! glorify Your name. Then a voice was heard from heaven: I have glorified and I will glorify again.
The people who stood and heard said: it is thunder. And others said: An angel spoke to Him.
Jesus answered and said: This voice was not for my sake, but for the sake of the people;
Now is the judgment of this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out;
and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to Me.
He said this, signifying what kind of death he would die.
The people answered Him: We have heard from the law that Christ abides forever; How then do You say that it is fitting for the Son of Man to be exalted? Who is this Son of man?
Then Jesus said to them: There is still light in you for a little while; walk while there is light, so that darkness does not overtake you; but he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going;
While the light is with you, believe in the light, that you may be sons of light. Having said this, Jesus went away and hid from them.
He performed so many signs before them; and they did not believe in Him,
may the word of the prophet Isaiah be fulfilled: Lord! who believed what they heard from us? and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed? (Isa.53:1).
Therefore they could not believe what Isaiah also said:
I have blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they may not see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, but they will return, that I may heal them (Isaiah 6:10).
Isaiah spoke this when he saw His glory and spoke about Him.
However, many of the rulers believed in Him, but for the sake of the Pharisees they did not confess, lest they be excommunicated from the synagogue;
for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
Jesus cried and said, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me;
and whoever sees Me sees Him who sent Me;
I have come as light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me will not remain in darkness.
And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I will not judge him, for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words has judgment for himself: the word that I have spoken will be judged against him at the last day.
For I did not speak from Myself, but the Father who sent Me gave Me a commandment, what to say and how to speak.
And I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore, whatever I say, as the Father told Me, so I speak.
Before the Feast of Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, having loved those who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
And during the supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Simon Iscariot to betray Him,
Knowing Jesus that the Father has delivered all things into His hands, and that He came from God and is coming to God.
he rose from supper, and took off his outer garments, and, having received the lention, girded himself;
then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and wipe them with the lention with which he was girded.
He approaches Simon Peter, and he says to Him: Lord! Should you wash my feet?
Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not know now, but you will understand later.”
Peter said to Him: You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I do not wash you, you will have no part with Me.
Simon Peter said to Him: Lord! not only my feet, but also my hands and head.
Jesus says to him: the one who is washed only needs to wash his feet, but he is all clean; and you are clean, but not all.
For He knew His betrayer, and that is why He said: You are not all pure.
When He had washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He lay down again and said to them: Do you know what I have done to you?
You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you speak the truth; This is who I am.
So, if I have washed your feet, Lord and Teacher, you should wash each other’s feet;
I have given you an image, so that you too may do as I have done for you.
Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his Master, and a messenger is not greater than him who sent him.
If you know this, blessed are you when you do the same.
I'm not talking about all of you; I know those I chose. But let the Scripture be fulfilled: He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me (Ps. 40:10).
Now I tell you before it comes to pass, so that when it comes to pass, you may believe that it is I.
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives whomever I send will receive Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.
Having said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.”
Then the disciples began to look around at each other, wondering who He was talking about.
One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining in the bosom of Jesus;
Simon Peter made a sign to him to ask who this was, of whom he was speaking.
And he, falling on Jesus’s chest, said to Him: Lord! who is this?
Jesus answered: he to whom I have soaked the bread I will give. And having soaked the bread, he gave it to Judas Simon Iscariot.
And then Satan entered into him through the bread. And Jesus said to him: Whatever you do, do it quickly.
But none of those reclining understood this, why He told him so.
Others thought, since Judas had the box, that Jesus was telling him: buy what is needed for the holiday, or what he would give to the poor.
Having accepted the bread, he immediately went out; and it was night when he went out.
Then Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;
if God is glorified in Him, and God will glorify Him in Himself, and will soon glorify Him.
Children! It is not yet enough for Me to be with you: you will seek Me, and as I told the Jews, where I am going, you cannot come, so I say to you today.
I give you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, so you also love one another;
of this all will understand that you are my disciples when you have love for one another.
Simon Peter said to Him: Lord! where are you going? Jesus answered him: Where I am going, you cannot now follow Me, but later you will follow Me.
Peter said to Him: Lord! Why can’t I now follow You? now I will lay down my soul for You.
Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for Me?” Truly, truly, I say to you, the snares will not cry until you deny Me three times.
Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God and believe in Me.
In My Father's house there are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you: I am going to prepare a place for you.
And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that you also may be where I am.
And where I am going, you know, and you know the way.
Thomas said to Him: Lord! we don’t know where you are going; and how can we know the way?
Jesus said to him: I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me;
if you knew Me, you would also know My Father; and henceforth they knew Him and saw Him.
Philip said to Him: Lord! show us the Father, and it is enough for us.
Jesus said to him: I have been with you so long, and you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; and how do you say: show us the Father?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak from Myself, but the Father who abides in Me, He does the works.
Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me; but when it is not so, believe Me for those works.
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do will he do also, and greater works than these will he do, for I am coming to My Father.
And whatever you ask of the Father in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
And whatever you ask in My name, I will do.
If you love Me, keep My commandments.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may be with you forever,
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, for it neither sees Him nor knows Him; and you know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you.
It’s still a little bit: and the world will no longer see Me; and you will see Me; for I live, and you will live.
On that day you will understand that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
He who has My commandments and keeps them, he loves Me; but whoever loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will appear to him Myself.
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him: Lord! What does it mean that you want to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?
Jesus answered and said to him, “Whoever loves Me will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him.
He who does not love Me does not keep My words; But the word that you have heard is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.
These things I spoke to you while I was with you;
But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you everything and remember everything that I have told you.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled or afraid.
Have you heard that I said to you: I will leave and come to you. If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said: I go to the Father, for My Father is greater than Me.
And now I told you before it happened, that you may have faith when it comes to pass.
I will not speak much with you anymore, for the prince of this world comes and has nothing in Me.
But let the world understand that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded Me, so I do. Get up, let's get out of here.
I am the true vine, and My Father is the worker;
He cuts off every branch of Me that does not bear fruit; and every one that produces fruit he cleanses, so that he may bear abundant fruit.
You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you.
You will be in Me, and I will be in you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit by itself unless it is on the vine; so will you, if you do not abide in Me.
I am the vine, you are the branches; Whoever remains in Me, and I in him, will produce much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Whoever does not abide in Me will be cast out like a branch and wither; These are collected, thrown into the fire, and burned.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you; Then ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
For this my Father will be glorified, that you will produce much fruit, and you will be my disciples.
As the Father has loved Me, I have loved you; abide in My love.
If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
I have spoken these things to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you;
There is no greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends.
You are My friends when you do what I command you.
And I no longer call you slaves; for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for I have told you everything that I have heard from My Father.
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you may go and bear fruit, and that your fruit may remain, that the Father may give you whatever you ask of the Father in My name.
I command you this, that you love one another.
If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before you;
if you were from the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world; That's why the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you: a servant is not greater than his master. If I was driven out, you will be driven out too; if they have kept my word, they will also keep yours;
but they will do all these things to you for My name’s sake, for they do not know Him who sent Me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
He who hates Me and My Father hates.
If I had not done among them works that no one else had done, they would not have had sin; Now they have seen and hated Me and My Father.
But let the word that is written in their law be fulfilled: They have hated Me without a cause (Ps. 68:5).
When the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me;
and you will bear witness, for you have been with Me from the beginning.
I have spoken these things to you, so that you will not be offended.
You will be excommunicated from the synagogues; but the hour will come when everyone who kills you will think that he is serving God;
and they will do this because they have not known either the Father or Me.
But I have told you this, so that when that hour comes you will remember what I told you; At first I didn’t tell you about this, because I was with you.
Now I go to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me: Where are you going?
But when I told you about this, your heart was filled with sorrow.
But I tell you the truth: it is better for you that I go; for unless I go away, the Comforter will not come to you; and if I go away, I will send Him to you.
And when He comes, He will convict the world about sin, and about righteousness, and about judgment:
about sin, that they do not believe in Me;
about the truth, that I go to My Father, and you will see Me no more;
about judgment, that the prince of this world is condemned.
I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak of Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak of, and He will tell you what is to come;
He will glorify Me, for He will receive of Mine and tell it to you.
All that the Father has is Mine; Therefore I said that he will receive from Mine and tell you.
It’s still a little while and you won’t see Me, but soon you’ll see Me again; for I go to the Father.
Then some of His disciples began to say to themselves: what is He saying to us: yet it is a little while, and you will not see Me, and again soon you will see Me; and: Am I going to the Father?
So they said: What does He say: soon? We don’t know what he’s saying.
Jesus, realizing that they wanted to question Him, said to them: Do you reason among yourself about this, that I said: For a little while, you will not see Me, and again soon you will see Me?
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will mourn and lament, but the world will rejoice; You will be sad, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
When a woman gives birth, she suffers sorrow, for her hour has come; and when she gives birth to a baby, she no longer remembers the sorrow for the joy that a man was born into the world.
And you have sorrow now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you;
and on that day you will not ask anything from Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.
Hitherto you have not asked anything in My name; ask and receive, that your joy may be filled.
I told you everything in parables; but the hour will come when I will no longer speak to you in parables, but will clearly tell you about the Father.
On that day you will ask in My name, and I do not tell you that I will pray to the Father for you:
and the Father Himself loves you, because you loved Me and believed that I came from God.
He came from the Father and came into the world; and again I leave the world and go to the Father.
His disciples said to Him: Now you speak without hesitation and do not speak any parables;
Now we see that you know everything and have no need for anyone to question You; Therefore we believe that You came from God.
Jesus answered them: Do you believe now?
Behold, the hour is coming, and it has already come, that you will scatter, each in his own direction, and leave Me alone; but I am not alone: the Father is with Me.
I have spoken these things to you, so that in Me you may have peace. You will be sorrowful in the world, but take heart; I have conquered the world.
Thus spoke Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: Father! the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,
just as You gave Him power over all flesh, that He might give eternal life to all that You have given Him:
This is eternal life, that they may know You, the One True God, and Him Whom You sent, Jesus Christ.
I glorified You on earth, I completed the work that You gave Me to do.
And now glorify Me, O Father, with You, with the glory that I had with You before the world was.
I have revealed Your name to men, whom You gave Me out of the world; They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they kept your word;
Now they have understood that everything that You have given Me is from You.
For the words that You gave Me, I gave them; and they received and understood truly that I came from You, and believed that You sent Me.
I pray for them, not for the whole world, but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours;
and all that is mine is thine, and all that is thine is mine; and I was glorified in them.
And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father! keep them in Your name, whom You have given Me, so that they may be one like We.
When I was at peace with them, I kept them in Thy name; whom You gave Me, I preserved, and none of them perished, only the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled (Ps. 109:17).
Today I come to You, and I say these things in the world, so that they may have My joy filled within themselves.
I have delivered Your word to them; and the world hated them, for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
I do not pray that you take them away from the world, but that you keep them from evil.
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them in Thy truth; Thy word is truth.
Just as You sent Me into the world, and I sent them into the world,
and for their sake I will sanctify Myself, that they also may be sacred in truth.
I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in Me through their word,
that they may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that You sent Me.
And the glory that You gave Me, I have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one.
I in them, and You in Me, that they may be perfect in one, and that the world may understand that You sent Me and loved them as You loved Me.
Father! whom You have given Me, I want them to be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory, which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
Righteous Father! and the world did not know You; but I have known You, and these have known that You sent Me;
and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
And having said this, Jesus went out with His disciples to the other side of the stream of Cedars, where there was a garden, and Himself and His disciples entered into it;
Judas, His betrayer, also knew this place; for Jesus often gathered there with His disciples.
So Judas, having taken a detachment of soldiers and servants from the bishops and Pharisees, comes there with lamps and torches and weapons.
Jesus, knowing all what would happen to Him, went out and said to them: Whom are you looking for?
They answered Him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them: It is I. And Judas, His betrayer, stood there.
And when he said to them, “It is I,” they retreated back and fell to the ground.
Again he asked them: Who are you looking for? They said: Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus answered: I told you that it is I; if you are looking for Me, leave them, let them go, -
that the word spoken by Him might be fulfilled: of those whom You gave Me, I have not destroyed a single one.
Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the bishop's servant, and cut off his right ear; The servant's name was Malchus.
But Jesus said to Peter, Sheathe your sword; this cup that the Father has given me, how can I not drink it?
Then the soldiers and the captain and the officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him,
and they led Him first to Anna; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year;
This Caiaphas gave advice to the Jews that it was better for one person to die for the people.
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus; This disciple was known to the high priest and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priests;
and Peter stood outside at the door. Then another disciple, who was known to the high priest, came out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and she let Peter in.
Then the servant servant said to Peter: “Are you not one of this Man’s disciples?” He answered: no.
The slaves and servants lit a fire because it was cold, they stood here and warmed themselves. Peter also stood with them and warmed himself.
The high priest began to ask Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews meet, and I did not say anything secretly;
what are you asking me? ask those who heard what I said.
When He had said this, one of the ministers standing there struck Jesus on the cheek, saying, “Is this how you answer the high priest?”
Jesus answered him: if I said something bad, show me what is bad; What if it’s good that you beat Me?
And Annas sent Him bound to the high priest Caiaphas.
Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. And then they said to him, “Are you not one of His disciples?” But he denied and said: no.
One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, says: Didn't I see you with Him in the garden?
Peter denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
They took Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning; and they did not enter the praetorium, lest they become defiled, and they might eat the Passover.
Pilate went out to them and said, “What is your charge against this man?”
They answered him: If He had not been an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.
Pilate says to them: Take Him and judge Him according to your law. The Jews said to him, “It is not permissible for us to put anyone to death,”
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He said, indicating by what kind of death He would die.
Then Pilate again entered the praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to Him: Are you the King of the Jews?
Jesus answered him: Are you saying this on your own, or have others told you about Me?
Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Your people and the chief priests delivered You up to me; what have you done?
Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world; If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would struggle so that I would not be betrayed to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.
Pilate said to Him: So are You a King? Jesus answered: You say that I am a King; For this purpose I was born and came to testify to the truth; everyone who is of the truth will listen to my voice.
Pilate said to Him: What is truth? and having said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them: I find no guilt in Him;
You have a custom for me to give you one for Easter; Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?
But then everyone shouted again, saying: not Him, but Barabbas. Barabbas was a robber.
Then Pilate ordered to take Jesus and beat Him;
and the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and clothed Him in a scarlet robe,
and they exclaimed: Rejoice, King of the Jews! And they beat Him on the cheeks.
Pilate came out to them again and said to them: Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, so that you may know that I do not find any guilt in Him.
Then Jesus came out wearing a crown of thorns and a scarlet robe. And Pilate said to them: Behold, Man!
When the chief priests and ministers saw Him, they raised a cry, saying: Crucify Him, crucify Him! Pilate says to them: Take Him and crucify Him; for I find no fault in Him.
The Jews answered him: we have a law, but according to our law He must die, because He declared Himself the Son of God.
Pilate, hearing this word, was even more afraid,
and again he entered the praetorium and said to Jesus: Where are you from? But Jesus did not give him an answer.
Pilate says to Him: Do you not answer me? Do you not know that I have the power to crucify You, and I have the power to release You?
Jesus answered: You would not have any power over Me if it had not been given to you from above; therefore there is greater sin on him who delivered Me to you.
From there Pilate tried to let Him go. But the Jews began to shout, saying: If you let Him go, you are not a friend of Caesar; Anyone who sets himself up as a king is an opponent of Caesar.
Hearing these words, Pilate brought Jesus out and sat down at the judgment seat, in a place called lifostroton 18, and in Hebrew gavvafa.
Then it was the Friday before Easter, about six o'clock. And Pilate said to the Jews: Behold, your King!
But they shouted: take him, take him, crucify him! Pilate says to them: Shall I crucify your king? The high priests answered: We have no king except Caesar.
Then finally he handed Him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.
And, bearing His cross, He went out to a place called Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
There they crucified Him and with Him two others on one side and the other, with Jesus in the middle.
Pilate also wrote the title and laid it on the cross. It was written: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
This inscription was read by many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.
The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write: King of the Jews, but as He said: I am the King of the Jews.
Pilate answered: I wrote what I wrote.
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, a portion for each soldier, and a tunic; but the tunic was not sewn, but entirely woven on top.
So they said to each other: Let us not tear it apart, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be, so that what is said in the Scripture may be fulfilled: They divided my garments among themselves, and cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did (Ps. 21:19).
Standing at the cross of Jesus were His Mother and His Mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jesus, seeing His Mother and the disciple standing there, whom He loved, said to His Mother: Woman, behold, Your son!
Then he says to the disciple: Behold, your Mother! And from that hour that disciple took Her to him.
Therefore, Jesus knowing that everything has already been accomplished so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he says: I thirst.
The vessel stood there, full of vinegar. They filled a sponge with vinegar and stuck it on a hyssop reed, and put it to His mouth.
When he tasted the vinegar, Jesus said: It is done! And, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
Since it was Friday, the Jews, so that their bodies would not remain on the cross on Saturday - for that Saturday was a great day - they asked Pilate to break their legs and remove their bodies.
The soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him;
but when they came to Jesus, when they saw Him already dead, they did not break His legs;
but one of the soldiers pierced His ribs with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
And he who saw it testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you may have faith.
And this came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled: a bone shall not be broken by Him (Ex. 12:46).
And another Scripture says: they will look at Him whom they have pierced (Zechariah 12:10).
After this, Joseph from Arimathea (a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, out of fear from the Jews) begged Pilate to remove the Body of Jesus; and Pilate allowed it. He went and took down the Body of Jesus.
Nicodemus also came (who had previously come to Jesus at night) and brought a composition of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred liters.
So they took the Body of Jesus and wrapped it in swaddling clothes with spices, as is the custom of burial among the Jews.
In the place where He was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid;
There they laid Jesus for the sake of the Friday of the Jews, because the tomb was close.
On the very first day of the week, Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb early, when it was still dark, and sees the stone taken from the tomb;
Then he runs and comes to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them: They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and I do not know where they have laid Him.
Immediately Peter and the other disciple came out and went to the tomb;
they both ran together; but the other disciple ran faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb,
and, bending down, he saw the linens lying; but didn't go in.
Simon Peter comes after him and enters the tomb, and sees only the linens lying;
and the cloth that was on His head does not lie with swaddling clothes, but is specially rolled up in another place.
Then the other disciple, who had first come to the tomb, also entered, and saw and believed;
for they had not yet understood from the Scripture that He had to rise from the dead.
So the disciples went home again.
Mary stood at the entrance to the tomb and wept; and weeping she went into the tomb,
and sees two Angels, in white robes, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the Body of Jesus lay.
And they say to her: wife! Why are you crying? He says to them: They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they have laid Him.
And having said this, she turned back and saw Jesus standing; and did not recognize that it was Jesus.
Jesus says to her: woman! Why are you crying? who are you looking for? She, thinking that it is the gardener, says to him: Master! if you took Him. tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him.
Jesus says to her: Mary! And she turned and said to Him: Rabbi! which means: Teacher.
Jesus says to her: Do not touch Me; I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to my brethren and say to them: I ascend to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.
And Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and what He had said to her.
That same day, the first day of the week, in the evening, while His disciples were there and the doors were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, “Peace be with you!”
Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet and His ribs. And the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
And Jesus said to them again: Peace be with you! just as the Father sent Me, and I send you.
Having said this, he breathed and said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit:
Whose sins you forgive, their sins will be forgiven; on whomever you leave it, they will remain.
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not here with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples told him: we have seen the Lord. And he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the marks of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
And after eight days had passed, His disciples gathered in the house again, and Thomas with them. Jesus came when the doors were locked, and stood in the middle and said: Peace be with you!
Then he says to Thomas: put your finger here and see my hands; give me your hand and place it in my side; and do not be unfaithful, but believe.
And Thomas answered and said to Him: My Lord and my God!
Jesus says to him: therefore you believed that you saw Me; Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Jesus did many other signs before His disciples, which are not written in this book;
Now this is written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you may have life in His name.
After this, again, having risen from the dead, Jesus appeared to His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He appeared like this:
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called the Twin, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples.
Simon Peter said to them: I’m going to fish. They say to him: you and I are going too. They went and immediately entered the ship, and that night they did not catch anything.
And when morning came, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus.
And Jesus said to them: children! Do you have anything edible? They answered Him: no.
He said to them: cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you will catch it. They cast, and could no longer pull out the net from the multitude of fish.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter: This is the Lord. Simon Peter, hearing that the Lord, girded himself with his robe (for he was naked) and threw himself into the sea;
and the other disciples arrived in the ship (for it was not far from the land, about two hundred cubits), dragging a net with fish.
When they came to the ground, they saw a fire laid out, and fish lying on it, and bread.
Jesus said to them: Bring the fish that you have caught today.
Simon Peter came out and brought to the ground a net full of great fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and with such a multitude the network did not break through.
Jesus said to them: Come, have dinner. None of the disciples dared to ask Him: Who are you? They knew it was the Lord.
Jesus comes, takes the bread and gives them fish as well.
This was the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples, having risen from the dead.
When they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon the Jonah! Do you love Me more than they? Peter says to Him: Yes, Lord! You know that I love You. He said to him: Feed My lambs.
He says to him a second time: Simon Ionin! do you love me? Peter says to Him: Yes, Lord! You know that I love You. Jesus says to him: Feed My sheep.
He says to him for the third time: Simon the Jonah! do you love me? Peter was saddened that he asked him for the third time: Do you love Me? and said to Him: Lord! You know everything; You know that I love You. Jesus said to him: Feed My sheep.
Truly, truly, I say to you: when you were young, you belted yourself and went wherever you wanted; When you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will girdle you and lead you where you do not want to go.
This is what He said, indicating by what death Peter would glorify God. And having said this, he says to him: follow Me.
Peter, turning, sees walking behind the disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who at the supper, bowing down on His chest, said: Lord! who betrays you?
Having seen this, Peter said to Jesus: Lord! what is he?
Jesus says to him: If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? you follow Me.
And this word spread to the brethren that that disciple would not die. But Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but if I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?
This disciple testifies to this and wrote this; and we know that his testimony is true.
Jesus did many other things; but if we were to write about it in detail, then I think the world itself would not be able to accommodate the books written. Amen.
