Patriarch Daniel at Vatopedi and Zograf

From Mount Athos to Africa, from Rome to Crete, this week the Orthodox world bowed before holy relics, icons, and new cathedrals while remembering martyrs who gave their lives for Christ.

On 22 October His Holiness Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria stepped onto the Holy Mountain. The monks of Vatopedi received him with solemn joy as he venerated the precious Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos. From there the Patriarch went to Zograf, the Bulgarian monastery on Athos, where, exactly 750 years after the martyrdom of the twenty-six Zograf martyrs, he presided at the all-night vigil and the solemn Divine Liturgy. The same spirit of reverence moved through the whole week. In Kinshasa the new cathedral dedicated to the Apostle Mark was solemnly inaugurated. In Rethymno the wonderworking icon of Panagia Soumela and the relics of Saint Demetrius were welcomed with tears and songs. In Rome a prayer was offered for the first time at the altar of Saint Erasmus of Ohrid. Even the children’s choir from Łódź carried their voices to Częstochowa. Each place showed the same quiet longing: to touch what is holy and to stand faithful as the martyrs did.

Metropolis expresses concern over Christmas Park theme

The Metropolis of Kalavryta and Aigio of the Church of Greece voiced its concern about the chosen theme of this year’s “Christmas Park” in Aigio, which focuses on the protection and love of animals. In its statement the Metropolis noted that in our time, when many people have distanced themselves from the Church, such a choice may not best serve the spiritual preparation for the feast of the Nativity of Christ.

The calendar

The week brought two Julian-calendar feasts side by side with the civil calendar. On 19 October believers honored Saint Innocent, Metropolitan of Moscow, and the Holy Apostle Thomas. On 22 October the Church remembered Saint Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow, and the Holy Apostle James, son of Alphaeus. These commemorations quietly call the faithful to missionary zeal, to patient confession of the faith, and to the apostolic simplicity that still sustains the Church in every land.

Looking ahead
Next week the Church prepares to greet the Greatmartyr Demetrius on 26 October according to the Gregorian calendar. The feast of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke follows on 31 October according to the Julian calendar. Both saints remind us that courage in witness and careful recording of the Gospel remain essential for every Christian life.

May the same grace that touched the monasteries of Athos, the new cathedral in Africa, and the children singing in Poland strengthen every reader in the quiet days ahead. Christ is in our midst.
