Samuel Returns to Bulgaria

Thousands welcomed the relics of Tsar Samuel after a thousand years, while saints, springs, missionaries, and new churches reminded believers that the Lord still visits His people in quiet and solemn ways.

On October 3, 2026, the streets of Sofia filled with thousands of Bulgarian faithful who came to receive the earthly remains of their medieval Tsar Samuel. More than a millennium after his death the warrior-king returned home to the heart of his capital in a solemn state ceremony titled “Bulgaria…”. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church stood at the center of this homecoming that stirred deep national and ecclesial memory. The same week carried the quiet power of ordinary parish life. In remote Alaskan villages a Russian missionary once built a church from an earthen hut and taught Aleuts to abandon polygamy and the killing of slaves. In Belarus a new spring was blessed in honor of the Apostles Peter and Paul. Romanian churches celebrated their patron saints, Greek missionaries brought clean water to Tanzanian children, and eight hierarchs consecrated a cathedral in Hunedoara. Across continents the Church kept showing that grace still flows through living water, faithful witness, and the return of the past to its people.

On October 3 the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the people of Sofia welcomed the relics of Tsar Samuel in a moving state ceremony. More than a thousand years after his repose the medieval Bulgarian ruler returned to the capital among his own. Thousands gathered in the city center as the relics were solemnly received. Saint Innocent and the Aleuts

Saint Innocent of Moscow, while still a young priest on the island of Unalaska, began his mission by building a church even though his own family lived in a hut that resembled more an earthen dugout than a house. With patience and love he convinced the Aleut people to abandon polygamy and the custom of killing slaves. The Russian Orthodox Church remembers his labors as a bright example of how the Gospel can transform an entire culture when it is brought with humility and persistent care. Priests Join College Parent Meetings

Priests of the Zhlobin deanery in the Gomel Diocese took part in parent meetings at local colleges. They reminded families that even when a child moves from school to vocational training and greater independence, the role of the Christian family in shaping the young person’s character remains unchanged. The Russian Orthodox Church continues to walk beside parents and educators, quietly witnessing that the formation of the soul is a lifelong task rooted in the home. Zlătari Church Keeps Its Patronal Feast

The Zlătari Church in Bucharest celebrated its patronal feast of the Hieromartyr Cyprian and the Martyr Justina. Clean Water Returns to Tanzanian Children

Thanks to the Missionary Home association of the Church of Greece, a drinking-water borehole at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the village of Kipera, central Tanzania, was repaired. The calendar

The week brought the Protection of the Most-Holy Theotokos on October 1 (gregorian), when the faithful remember the Mother of God spreading her veil over the city of Constantinople and over every Christian soul in danger. The same day honors Saint Romanos the Melodist. On the Julian calendar October 4 was the Sunday after the Elevation of the Cross and the memory of Apostle Quadratus of the Seventy. Earlier, September 28 (gregorian) kept the memory of Venerable Chariton the Confessor and the Holy Prophet Baruch. These feasts quietly assure the believer that divine protection, courageous confession, and the hymns of the Church still sustain us.

Looking ahead
Next week the Church will honor Saint Innocent of Moscow and the Apostle Thomas on October 6, followed by the Holy New Martyrs of Alaska and Protomartyr Thecla on October 7. The repose of Saint Sergius of Radonezh falls on October 8, and Saint Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow, is remembered on October 9 together with the Apostle James. These commemorations invite us to walk in the footsteps of missionaries, martyrs, and great monastic fathers who handed the faith down to us.

May the same grace that welcomed Samuel home, blessed the spring, and gave water to thirsty children strengthen every Orthodox home this week. Walk gently, pray simply, and trust that the Lord is still multiplying His gifts among us.
