Romanian Navy Day is celebrated on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Marytranslated

On the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Romanian civilian and military sailors celebrate the Romanian Navy Day annually.

The holiday is marked by military ceremonies, including flag raising, military honors, naval parades, demonstration exercises and prayers for fallen sailors.

Romanian Navy Day was established by Law no. 382 of September 28, 2004, and in 2009 this day was declared a national holiday.

This day has been consecrated as a celebration of Romanian sailors since August 15, 1902, being closely related to the Dormition of the Mother of God, the protector of sailors everywhere, according to the information published on the website of the Romanian Naval Forces.

On that date, the event was marked in the Port of Constanţa, on board the Elisabeta Cruiser, with a Tedeum officiated in the presence of the Minister of War, Dimitrie A. Sturdza, followed by the maritime celebration itself.

Since then, the events have grown in scale from year to year. In 1912, the event was placed under the High Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and on August 15, 1936, during the celebrations, the first Romanian submarine, the Dolphin, was christened.
